ICE detains 5-year-old in Minnesota, school official says he was used as ‘bait’

Federal Immigration Agents Detain 5-Year-Old Boy as 'Bait' in Minnesota

A shocking incident has unfolded in Minneapolis, where federal immigration agents detained a 5-year-old boy from his home, leaving the child's family and community reeling. Liam Conejo Ramos, who arrived at school that morning, was taken into custody along with his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The incident has raised serious questions about the treatment of immigrant children and the tactics employed by ICE.

According to school officials and the family's lawyer, Liam was used as "bait" by the agents, who instructed him to knock on the door of his home while his father waited in a running car. This brazen move left the child vulnerable to potential harm, with school Superintendent Zena Stenvik describing it as "terrifying". The agents allegedly refused to leave Liam with another adult present at the scene or an official from the school district.

The family's lawyer, Marc Prokosch, has expressed outrage over the incident and vowed to explore all available options to free his client. Meanwhile, ICE spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin has denied accusations that the agency targeted a child, stating that they were detaining the father for immigration-related issues. However, the incident has sparked widespread condemnation from community leaders, with many accusing ICE of prioritizing enforcement over family safety.

This disturbing case is part of a larger trend of increased immigration enforcement in Minnesota, which has led to the detention of numerous students and families from local schools. According to Children's Rights chief legal counselor Leecia Welch, conditions at the Dilley detention center are worsening, with children facing malnutrition, illness, and prolonged detention.

The incident has also highlighted the trauma caused by ICE's aggressive tactics on Minnesota communities. School board chair Mary Granlund expressed concern over the impact on students' mental health, while community leader Rachel James reported witnessing neighbors being ignored by agents when offering to care for the detained child.

Vice President JD Vance was criticized for downplaying the severity of the incident and justifying detention as a necessary measure to prevent illegal immigration. However, his comments have been met with skepticism from many, who argue that families are already being torn apart due to administrative policies.

The number of detained children has skyrocketed in recent months, with Children's Rights reporting that nearly every child they spoke to was sick and in dire need of medical attention. As the community struggles to come to terms with this disturbing incident, one thing is clear: it's time for policymakers to prioritize family safety and well-being over immigration enforcement tactics.

🚨💔 This is absolutely heartbreaking. Using a 5-year-old as "bait" in an immigration raid is a new low even for ICE. I mean, what kind of operation are they running here? It's not just about detaining the parents, it's about putting innocent children in harm's way. The fact that they wouldn't leave Liam with another adult or school official present is just devastating.

And let's not forget the trauma this child has already experienced - being used as a pawn in an immigration enforcement operation. How are we supposed to expect him to recover from this? It's not like he had a say in any of it, or a choice about what happened to him. And now, his family is facing the uncertainty and fear of not knowing when they'll be reunited.

We need to demand better from our policymakers - more than just platitudes about "family safety" and "immigration enforcement". We need action that actually prioritizes the well-being of families over bureaucratic machinations. The kids at Dilley detention center, Liam's story, it's all too similar. It's time for change 🚫💪

omg this is soooo not cool what happened to lil liam 🤕🚫 i mean can u imagine being 5 yrs old and having ur dad wait in a car outside while u go knock on the door of ur own home like wut r they even thinkin 😩 ICE needs to get its act together and start prioritizin family safety over enforcement tactics cuz this is just plain wrong 🙅‍♂️ my heart goes out 2 lil liam and his fam 🤗 i hope they can get him outta this situation ASAP 💕

I'm literally still shaking after hearing about this 🤕 ICE needs to seriously rethink their tactics, using a 5-year-old as 'bait' is just heartbreaking 😔. Who does that? 🙄 Not only did they put the kid in harm's way, but now he's got his whole life turned upside down because of some immigration issue. It's like they forgot he's a human being with feelings and needs ❤️. As for VP Vance saying it's necessary to prevent illegal immigration... no, just no 🚫. We need to be talking about keeping families together, not tearing them apart. This is getting out of hand 😤.

omg this is so messed up 🤯 a 5 year old being used as bait by ICE agents is literally crazy 😱 i dont get why they cant just talk to the parents like normal ppl do 🤔 i mean what is wrong with them? and whats even more sad is that lil boy has to go through all this trauma 🤕 my heart goes out to his family 💔 can someone pls explain to me whyICE is being so aggressive with these families? 🤔

WHAT A COMPLETE DISASTER!!! THESE FEDERAL IMMIGRATION AGENTS NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER! DETAINING A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY AS "BAIT" IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE 🤯🚫! THE TREATMENT OF IMMIGRANT CHILDREN IS ALREADY PRECARIOUS, AND NOW THEY'RE PUTTING THEM IN HARM'S WAY LIKE THIS?! IT'S NOT ABOUT ENFORCEMENT; IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE'S LIVES AND SAFETY!!!

ICE = Kids in Custody Everyday?

this is so messed up 🤯 the fact that they used a 5-year-old boy as "bait" is just horrific, who does that?!? the whole system is just so broken, i mean, what's next? using kids in some kind of game to get adults to cooperate? it's like we're living in some kind of dystopian nightmare. and meanwhile, the people in charge are more worried about enforcing immigration laws than protecting vulnerable children 🤷‍♀️. we need to rethink our priorities as a society, plain and simple 👎

🤕 OMG, can you even imagine what that little boy must have gone through? ICE should totally rethink their methods - using a 5-year-old as bait? 🚫 That's just gross! And the fact that they wouldn't leave him with another adult or official from the school district is just appalling. I mean, what kind of "tactics" involve putting a kid in harm's way like that? 🤯 It's not like Liam was even supposed to be at home that day... it's just so messed up! And now he's got the whole community talking about how they need to prioritize family safety and well-being over immigration enforcement. Like, yeah no kidding! 😩

🤕 this is seriously messed up... a 5-year-old boy being used as "bait" by ICE agents is just wrong on so many levels 🚫. what kind of system allows for this to happen? it's not like the child was even doing anything wrong, he was just going to school like every other kid 😔. and now he's traumatized because of it... my heart goes out to that little family 🤗. we need to start putting families first over immigration enforcement 🙌. this is not about keeping our country safe, it's about tearing apart communities and breaking children's trust 💔. something needs to change, and fast ⏱️.

😱 can you believe they detained a 5-year-old kid as bait? like what's next, using your fave toy car to get someone to do a prank? 🤣 ICE needs to get their priorities straight - shouldn't we be focusing on finding adoptive families for these kids instead of chasing after illegal immigration? 🤷‍♀️ and btw, why did they not just call the parents first before showing up at the doorstep? 😒

🤕 Man, what a messed up situation... I mean, can you imagine being 5 years old and having your life flipped upside down like that? It's not just about the kid getting taken away from his family, it's also about the trauma he must've experienced in that split second. The fact that they used him as "bait" is just heartless... I think we need to take a step back and ask ourselves if our immigration policies are really making us safer or just causing more suffering for innocent families like this one. It's not just about numbers or enforcement, it's about human beings being treated with dignity and respect. We need to find a way to balance security with compassion... 🤝

🚨😱 I'm still trying to process how a 5-year-old boy was used as "bait" by federal immigration agents to detain his father... this is just heartbreaking. ICE needs to rethink their strategy, it's not worth putting innocent kids in harm's way. 🤕 Parents are already worried about sending their kids to school without knowing who will be watching them. The thought of an agent telling a child to knock on the door while another person waits in the car... no wonder the family is traumatized! 😨
