A horror fan’s guide to Halloween’s next cult classics - Detroit Metro Times

If you're a horror fan like me, who's always on the lookout for their next adrenaline fix, then Halloween is here to bring you some much-needed thrills. While many of us flock to classic fright flicks every year, I'm willing to take a risk and venture into some newer, unexplored territory.

From the desolate depths of a cave system where human terror reigns supreme in 'The Descent' to an unsettling blend of action and horror that's equal parts Terminator, Rambo, and Halloween - David Collins brings a fresh yet unsettling presence to his new family.

However, I've discovered some modern masterpieces that are sure to send chills down your spine and cement their place as cult classics for years to come.

First up is the slow-burning, psychological masterpiece 'Piercing', directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa - a filmmaker who's known for his dark explorations of human nature. What starts off as a seemingly ordinary serial killer thriller quickly morphs into an unsettling commentary on our darkest fears and anxieties.

Next, I'd recommend the 2021 film 'The Empty Man', based on Cullen Breslin's graphic novel - a strange yet captivating blend of folk horror and detective thriller that will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Lastly, we have 'Hereditary' - an Oscar-worthy masterpiece that showcases the true meaning of family terror. With its unsettling atmosphere and genuinely unnerving performances, this film is sure to leave even the most seasoned horror fans sleeping with the lights on.

In addition to these cinematic nightmares, there are several other modern horror classics waiting to be discovered, including 'The Substance', a body-horror epic that's guaranteed to make you squirm in your seat, and 'Weapons', an original and unsettling thriller that will leave you questioning what's real and what's not.

So if you're anything like me - a die-hard horror fan who's always on the lookout for their next fright fix - then these films are sure to be right up your alley. Just remember: watch them alone, late at night, with headphones on...

I gotta say, these modern horror flicks are kinda like the party crashers of cinema - they come outta nowhere and leave a lasting impact! 🤯 But seriously, what's really interesting is how these films tap into our collective psyche and societal anxieties. 'The Descent' comes to mind as a metaphor for female empowerment and survival in the face of patriarchal oppression... or maybe I'm just reading too much into it 😂. On a more serious note, have you noticed how many of these modern horror classics deal with themes of trauma, mental health, and the blurring of reality? It's like they're reflecting our current societal conversations, but in a super unsettling way 🎃.

OMG u gotta check out "The Descent" its like soooo intense!! 😱 I mean I've seen it 3 times already and still can't get over the whole claustrophobic cave vibe 🤯. And yeah I'm a fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa too, his stuff is always so thought-provoking 🧠. But what's with all these new horror films popping up? Like "The Empty Man" sounds kinda weird but in a good way 🎃?

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's 'Piercing' is def one to watch, it's like he knows exactly how to tap into your deepest fears 😳. And can we talk about 'Hereditary' for a sec? that film gives me ALL THE CHILLS 🎥👺. i'm also intrigued by 'The Empty Man', folk horror & detective thriller is such an interesting combo 🤔. anyone seen these yet? should def check them out ASAP 👀

I'm so over these new horror movies everyone's raving about. Like, 'Piercing' is just a bunch of people walking around in the dark, talking about nothing - what's so scary about that? And don't even get me started on 'The Empty Man', it's like a bad dream from my childhood 😂. But you know what really gets under my skin? Those new 'body horror' movies everyone's obsessed with. Like, who thought it was a good idea to make people watch themselves get mutilated and infected all day? 🤢 I swear, some of these filmmakers are just trolling us at this point... 🙄

I LOVE HOW IT BLENDZ FOLK HORROR WITH DETECTIVE THRILLER 🕵️‍♂️. AND "HEREDITARY" IS LIKE, THE ULTIMATE FAMILY TERROR MOVIE - IT'S GOT THAT PERFECT BLEND OF CHILLS AND GENUINE UNNERVINGNESS 😨. HAVE YOU SEEN ANY OF THESE MOVIES?!

You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one. ~ Unknown 💀🎃 (Those horror movies might send chills down your spine but some people's experiences in real life are even scarier) 😱

I MEAN, WHO DOESNT LOVE GETTING CHILLS DOWN THEIR SPINE FROM A GOOD HORROR MOVIE??? 🎃🕷️ I'VE BEEN LOOKING INTO SOME OF THESE FILMS AND 'PIERCING' IS SUCH A DARK AND UNSETTLING ONE - IT'S LIKE KIYOSHI KUROSAWA TOOK ALL MY FEARS AND ANXIETIES AND PUT THEM ON SCREEN IN THIS SLOW-BURNING MASTERPIECE! 🤯 AS FOR 'THE EMPTY MAN', I'M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED IN THAT FILM, BUT IT'S SO CAPTIVATING AND STRANGE... AND 'HEREDITARY' IS LIKE THE ULTIMATE FAMILY HORROR MOVIE - IT'S SO UNSETTLINGLY REAL! 🎬

🎃 I'm loving this resurgence of dark cinematic gems. The way modern filmmakers are pushing boundaries and exploring our deepest fears is really refreshing 🤯. From 'Piercing' to 'Hereditary', these films showcase an unsettling blend of psychological tension and good ol' fashioned frights 😱. It's amazing how a slow-burning narrative can build up to such a chilling climax 💥. I'm also intrigued by the folk horror elements in 'The Empty Man', it's like a creepy, atmospheric dream 🌑. And have you seen 'The Substance'? That film is literally crawling under my skin 🐜...

🎃️ I'm loving this time of year! Halloween is all about embracing the spooky and the unknown. And if you're a horror fan like me, there's always something new to get excited about. I've recently discovered some amazing modern horror movies that are giving me major chills. 'Piercing' is so underrated - it's like Kiyoshi Kurosawa took all our darkest fears and anxieties and turned them into this slow-burning thriller. And have you seen 'The Empty Man'? It's like a folk horror and detective thriller mashed together... I need to watch it again ASAP! 🎥 Also, 'Hereditary' is still giving me nightmares 😱. What's your go-to horror movie to get you in the mood for Halloween?

🎃😱💀 [A person running away from monsters in a cave] 🚫😨

[An old serial killer is seen watching someone through a window, then suddenly jumps out and screams] 😲😵

🤯 A person is shown holding a family photo with a creepy grin on their face... 👻

[The camera pans over a messy room filled with taxidermy animals, and the words "Hereditary" appear in blood-red letters] 🕷️💔

man I just think about how we seek thrills and chills in horror movies as a way to confront and process our darker fears and anxieties in the real world 🤯 it's like, we want to experience the fear of the unknown in a controlled environment so we can deal with it head-on, you know? but at the same time, I think there's something really beautiful about how horror movies can tap into those deep-seated fears and anxieties that we try to keep hidden... they're like a mirror reflecting back our own darkest selves 💀 what do you think, is that why we're so drawn to horror movies?

I'm so over the same old Halloween flicks 🤣. I mean, don't get me wrong, they're still fun and all, but some of us want something a little more... intense 😱. Have you guys seen 'Piercing' lately? It's like Kurosawa took every creepy feeling you've ever had and put them on screen. And that twist ending? Mind blown 💥. I also just watched 'The Empty Man' and it's got some serious folk horror vibes 🌿. Not sure if I'd recommend it for beginners, though - it's a bit of a wild ride 😅.

I'm so done with school's Halloween party last year 🎃😒, I mean, who thought it was a good idea to play "Bobbing for Apples" in the cafeteria? It was literally just a bunch of freshmen getting apples stuck up their noses and crying 😂. But hey, if you're into that sorta thing...

On a more serious note, have you seen 'The Descent'? I watched it over break with my friends and we were all screaming at the screen 🍿😱. It's like, this super intense horror movie about women trapped in a cave system and they just get picked off one by one... sounds familiar? Anyway, if you haven't checked out some new horror movies lately, I think you should totally do so...

omg i completely agree! 🤩 'Hereditary' is literally one of those movies that'll haunt you forever 😱. and yeah piercing is so underrated it's like a slow burn of anxiety just watching it 🌪️. have u seen the empty man? it's got this weird folk horror vibe that's super creepy 😳. what do u think about these modern horror faves?

I just saw 'The Descent' and OMG it's so creepy 🤯 I love how it's all about a group of girls trapped in an underground cave system and they have to fight for survival. It's like, totally intense and suspenseful from start to finish 💀 The special effects are also pretty cool, especially the parts where they're crawling through narrow tunnels and stuff. Anyway, if you haven't seen it yet, I'd def recommend it... just don't watch it before bed lol 😂

omg I'm more of a rom-com person lol but have you seen that new park in Tokyo it's literally breathtaking 🌳🏞️ I went there last month and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom it was like a dream 🎉 the way they design these parks with all the little nooks and crannies is so peaceful too, I swear I almost forgot to bring my phone 📱
