What Carson Wentz's injury means for Vikings, J.J. McCarthy

Carson Wentz's injury has thrown the Minnesota Vikings' quarterback situation into chaos, but coach Kevin O'Connell made a smart decision by sitting second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy due to the risk of injury to both McCarthy and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer.

Wentz, who suffered a torn labrum and fractured socket in his left shoulder during a game against the Cleveland Browns last month, was still able to play despite being injured, but O'Connell ultimately decided that it wasn't worth risking further harm to either of the two young quarterbacks. By not starting McCarthy in place of Wentz, the Vikings are now giving McCarthy a chance to get some playing time and gain valuable experience.

McCarthy, who has only played 122 regular-season snaps and thrown 49 NFL passes, is expected to start Sunday against the Detroit Lions, with Brosmer serving as his backup. The Vikings will likely sign a third quarterback to round out their depth chart, but for now, it's McCarthy's chance to prove himself.

The situation raises questions about whether McCarthy has what it takes to be the Vikings' starter in the future. He had a rough start to his season, with QBR of just 20.3 in two games, and will need to demonstrate significant improvement over the next two months if he wants to enter 2026 as the team's unquestioned starter.

The Vikings may have underestimated their roster this season, but they're still giving McCarthy a fair chance to show what he can do. If he stays healthy, he'll have 10 games to prove himself and determine whether he's the quarterback of the future for Minnesota.

idk how i feel about mccarthy getting another shot tho ๐Ÿค”... on one hand, it's awesome that kevin o'connell is thinking about the bigger picture and wanting to help him develop, but on the other hand, 10 games might not be enough for him to prove himself if he can't step up his game ๐Ÿ’ช... i mean, wentz was still throwing with an injured shoulder and he's one of the more experienced QBs in the league... mccarthy is like the rookie with a lot on his shoulders ๐Ÿคฏ... but at the same time, it's better to give him some playing time now rather than later, so maybe this will be a wake-up call for him ๐Ÿ’ก... what do u guys think tho? ๐Ÿ˜

Ugh, quarterbacks are so fragile ๐Ÿค•... like, I remember watching Brett Favre play back in the day and he just took so many hits but always managed to get back up and keep going ๐Ÿ’ช. Nowadays, it seems like they can't even take a basic hit without getting hurt ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Anyway, J.J. McCarthy's got some big shoes to fill after Carson Wentz went down... I'm not sure if he'll be able to prove himself as the starter in 2026 ๐Ÿค”. The Vikings are giving him a chance though, so we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out โฐ. Maybe he'll surprise us like Russell Wilson did when he took over for Tarvaris Jackson ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

omg u no i think mccarthy got a sick break lol!! being sat out last wk was def a smart move by coach kevin o'connell tho ๐Ÿค... wentz is all messed up rn ๐Ÿ˜ฉ but its cool that mccarthy gets to play n gain exp! 20.3 qbr in two games is pretty rough tho.. he needs 2 step it up 4 real ๐Ÿ’ช if he wants 2 b the vikings starter in 2026... hopefully hes healthy n can make some magic happen ๐ŸŽฉ

idk about mccarthy, seems like o'connell just threw him into the deep end ๐Ÿค”. 122 snaps in a season? that's not enough experience for a QB. Brosmer might be the real deal tho, been quiet on the sidelines so far. still gonna sign another QB to backup, but lets see how mccarthy handles the pressure. if he gets hurt, it's all back to square one ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I mean, think about it, if you don't take risks, you'll never know what could've been. These QBs are basically being given a second chance to prove themselves, and who knows, maybe they'll surprise everyone with their skills. It's like that old saying goes, "opportunity doesn't come around twice". O'Connell's decision might seem cautious, but it's actually showing some trust in McCarthy's abilities. And let's be real, the Vikings could've just stuck with Wentz and risked more for the same result... so I guess this is a win-win? ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’ช

omg, i cant believe we r already in march ๐Ÿคฏ... anywayz, so carson wentz is out and now its mcCarthy vs max brosmer ๐Ÿ˜…. i think kevin o'connell made the right call by not starting mccarthy 2 soon tho, we dont want him gettin hurt like wentz did last month ๐Ÿ’”. its cool that they're givin mccarthy a chance 2 shine, but he's gotta step up his game 4 sure! ๐Ÿค” he's got 10 games 2 prove himself now... fingers crossed he can do it and become the vikings starter ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’ก I think it's awesome that O'Connell gave J.J. McCarthy a shot! ๐Ÿคž He's gotta show what he's made of after that rough start ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. 122 regular-season snaps is nothing, but at least he'll get to play some meaningful games now ๐Ÿ’ช. If he can stay healthy and lead the team to some wins, maybe the Vikings will see him as their QB1 for next season ๐Ÿค”. I'm curious to see how he'll do against the Lions this week ๐Ÿ‘€

I feel like the Vikings are being super chill about their QB situation ๐Ÿค”... I get that they're trying not to risk further injuries, but giving J.J. McCarthy a chance to start is kinda low-risk, high-reward ๐Ÿ’ช. He's gotta step up his game ASAP or he'll be stuck on the bench for good ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. And 10 games feels like a pretty short amount of time to prove himself ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ... I hope the kid can live up to the hype! ๐Ÿ‘€

omg i think it's awesome that coach O'Connell is giving j.j. mccarthy a chance to shine ๐Ÿคฉ... like, we've all been wondering how his career would play out, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ and yeah, 10 games is def a good amount of time for him to show what he's got ๐Ÿ’ช... i mean, it's not easy being the starter, especially in the nfl where injuries are always lurking ๐Ÿค• so fingers crossed that mccarthy stays healthy and proves himself as more than just a backup ๐Ÿ™

I gotta say, it's crazy that J.J. McCarthy is getting this chance now ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, 122 snaps in the regular season? That's not a lot of experience! But at the same time, it's great to see him get some playing time and learn from his mistakes ๐Ÿ’ช. The Vikings need someone who can step up if Wentz goes down, and McCarthy's gotta prove himself. It's all about development at this point โฐ. If he can stay healthy and improve his game, maybe he'll be the QB of the future for Minnesota ๐Ÿค”.

๐Ÿค” so i think it's cool that kevin o'connell is trying to give jj mccarthy some playing time despite him not having a ton of experience... like, mccarthy has only played 122 snaps and thrown 49 passes, which is super limited, but at the same time, he's got max brosmer as his backup, so it's not like they're putting all their eggs in one basket or anything. i think o'connell made a smart decision by not starting mccarthy right away, just to make sure that both quarterbacks don't get hurt trying to fill carson wentz's role.

now that mccarthy is gonna start sunday, it'll be interesting to see how he performs... like, 20.3 qbr in two games isn't great, but we can't count him out yet. the thing is, if he can stay healthy and show some improvement over the next few weeks, maybe he's got a shot at being the starter for minnesota. it's not an impossible task or anything, especially since they've only got 10 more games to figure things out.

anyway, i'm curious to see how mccarthy does this week... will he step up and make some plays, or will we be seeing a lot of benched throws ๐Ÿคž

I don't get why some ppl are so hard on J.J. McCarthy ๐Ÿค”... like, yeah, his stats ain't fire right now, but that doesn't mean he's a bad QB ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ... gotta give him credit, O'Connell gave him the chance to play, and now he's getting 10 games to turn it around ๐Ÿ’ช... Vikings are already signing another QB? that's cool, more reps for McCarthy ๐ŸŽฏ... hope he takes advantage of this second chance ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally so invested in J.J. McCarthy right now!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ He was having such a rough start to his season but then O'Connell gives him a chance and it's like, what even is that?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It makes total sense that they wouldn't want to risk both him and Max Brosmer getting hurt, I mean, you only get one shoulder, right?! ๐Ÿ’” But now we're left with McCarthy being thrust into the starting role and I'm so here for it!!! ๐Ÿคฉ He needs to step up his game though, QBR of 20.3 is not even close to what a starter should be doing! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ We need to see some magic from him between now and the end of the season or else he's gonna be left wondering what could've been... ๐Ÿค”

Ugh, I'm telling you, this is gonna be a long season if J.J. doesn't step up ๐Ÿคฏ... I mean, McCarthy's got some work to do after that rough start, but at least O'Connell gave him a chance to get some experience in. 10 games is a good chunk of time for him to prove himself, and if he stays healthy, I'd love to see what he can do ๐Ÿ˜Š. The Lions are a tough matchup on Sunday, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out... one thing's for sure, I'm gonna be keeping an eye on McCarthy ๐Ÿ‘€

I'm thinking, if J.J. McCarthy plays well next week, maybe his QBR will be around 40-50 ๐Ÿค”... that would be huge, you know? He needs to show us what he's got! The Vikings are already making some roster moves to strengthen their QB depth, like signing a third QB, so it'll be interesting to see who they pick up. I'm guessing it'll be someone with a decent arm and some experience... ๐Ÿคž

Here's a chart of the top 5 QBs drafted in the last 2 years:

| Rank | QB | College |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Desmond Ridder | Clemson |
| 2 | Carson Wentz | Wisconsin |
| 3 | Zach Wilson | BYU |
| 4 | Trey Hendrickson | SMU |
| 5 | Jordan Love | Utah State |

McCarthy's QBR at the end of each game, just for fun:

Week 1: 20.3
Week 2: 24.5
Week 3: (not played)

Let's see how he does! ๐Ÿ“Š

I'm kinda curious about J.J. McCarthy, ya know? I mean, Wentz is out, so it's like, now or never for this kid ๐Ÿค”. He only played 122 snaps last season, but at least he got some experience under his belt. The thing is, 20.3 QBR in two games is pretty rough ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Like, what does that even mean? Did McCarthy just have bad days or is it a sign of something deeper? I hope the Vikings know what they're getting themselves into here...

omg i'm lowkey hyped for J.J. McCarthy!! ๐Ÿ˜† he got this chance to shine and it's awesome that Coach O'Connell is giving him a shot! McCarthy has the potential to be an amazing QB and it's cool that the Vikings are investing in him ๐Ÿคฉ 10 games is plenty of time for him to prove himself, i'm rooting for him all the way! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” I don't know about this J.J. McCarthy kid, seems like a risk to me ๐Ÿšจ. Playing him now will only add to his injury history and may stunt his growth as a QB. And what's with not giving Wentz more time off? The guy's got an injury and the coach still thinks it's okay to put him back in? ๐Ÿ˜’ Either way, I guess we'll see if McCarthy can step up and lead the team to victory... but I'm not holding my breath ๐Ÿคฎ.
