Denouement review – darkly funny reckoning with relationship dystopia

In the haunting two-hander "Denouement," playwright John Morton and director Jimmy Fay deliver a darkly comedic reckoning with relationship dystopia, set against the backdrop of an apocalyptic world where global catastrophe is all but certain. The gripping drama follows Liam (Patrick O'Kane) and Edel (Anna Healy), a long-married couple whose time is running out as they're trapped in a remote cottage on a mountainside, surrounded by smoke and flames.

As the clock ticks down, Liam and Edel are forced to confront their troubled marriage, with each character lashing out in desperation through increasingly reckless means. Edel attempts to stay connected to the outside world via patchy phone calls, only to be met with devastating news of death and horror, while Liam's writing of a memoir takes on a confessional tone, as he pours out his guilt over what he perceives as his own culpability.

The set design by Maree Kearns is nothing short of ingenious, with the barricaded cottage serving as a graveyard for obsolete technology. The looping digital time signals and flashing numbers create a sense of unease, while the ancient video screens provide a eerie backdrop to Liam's writing process. Chris Warner's sound design perfectly complements the atmosphere, heightening the tension with every ominous beep and creak.

O'Kane and Healy deliver riveting performances that bring nuance and depth to their characters. The intensity of their portrayal of a marriage on the brink of collapse is mesmerizing, making it impossible to look away from the devastating consequences of their actions. Even without the apocalyptic premise, the focus on Liam and Edel's relationship makes for a gripping and emotionally charged drama that lingers long after the curtain falls.

As the clock ticks down to oblivion, Morton and Fay masterfully ratchet up the tension, culminating in a darkly comedic reckoning with the ultimate question: can two people find redemption before it's too late? The result is a searing exploration of love, guilt, and survival – a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

I gotta say, this "Denouement" sounds like quite the intense drama 💥🔥. I mean, I'm all for a good dark comedy, but the premise of an apocalyptic world with a crumbling marriage? That's some heavy stuff 🤯. I'm intrigued by the set design and sound design, it's clever how they use technology to create this sense of unease and tension 📺💻. The cast seems like a great choice too, O'Kane and Healy bring so much nuance to their characters, I can see why you'd be invested in their story from the get-go 👥.

But what really gets me is how they explore these deep themes of love, guilt, and redemption 🤔. It's like Morton and Fay are holding up a mirror to our own relationship problems, and it's uncomfortable but also kinda cathartic? I'm not sure if I'd want to watch this in real life though 😅, it sounds like it'd be pretty draining. Overall, I think "Denouement" is gonna be a wild ride, and I'll definitely be tuning in to see what all the fuss is about 🎬👀

🤯 just saw the most intense play "Denouement" 🎭 with my hubby & it was SO raw! 😩 how the lead actor poured out his feelings on stage via writing was so haunting... I felt like I was right there with him, stuck in that isolated cottage. 🏠😱 the sound design though?!? 😲 it had me jumping out of my seat every time something went "BOOP" or "CREAK". 🤪 Anna Healy & Patrick O'Kane's performances were honestly WOW... I loved how they didn't shy away from showing the cracks in their relationship. 💔 my only con is that I needed a box of tissues for sure! 😭 still, it was an unforgettable night out with my hubby & we're both still reeling from the experience 😵

😱 did u know that 75% of theatre tickets sold out on opening night for "Denouement"? 🤯 the box office numbers are insane! 📈 also, i checked the cast's social media and they're averaging around 1M followers each, which is a huge increase from last year's shows 🚀 and btw, have u seen the set design pics? 📸 maree kearns is a genius! 👏 and btw, did u know that anxiety & depression affect 40% of people at some point in their lives? 🤔 it's crazy how theatre can be such an effective tool for discussing mental health 💊

I'm not buying this "apocalyptic world" thing... just another way to make a relationship drama more interesting. I mean, come on, a global catastrophe? Please. It's all just an excuse for the couple to be selfish and argue with each other. And don't even get me started on the set design - it's just a bunch of old tech and some creepy video screens. The sound design is okay, I guess, but it's not like it's going to make you forget how predictable the whole thing is. O'Kane and Healy are talented actors and all, but even they can't save this mess from being a bit too sappy for my taste. And that ending? Yeah, I saw it coming from a mile away... 🙄

aww man this play sounds soooo intense 🤯🔥 i can already imagine how stressful it must be for the actors to perform in that situation... but at the same time, i love how they're able to convey such depth and emotion through their characters' interactions 😭💔 what really gets me is how the set design and sound effects contribute to this feeling of unease and tension - it's like you're right there with them in that cottage 🌪️📺 o'kane and healy must be giving some amazing performances, i'm so down for watching this play ASAP 💖

I just watched "Denouement" and I'm still reeling from it 🤯. I mean, those actors Patrick O'Kane and Anna Healy are absolute geniuses! They totally bring to life this super messed up marriage and you can't help but feel for them (and also kinda hate on them at the same time 😒). The way the director Jimmy Fay and playwright John Morton build up the tension is insane, it's like you're right there with them in that crazy cottage. And the set design? Whoa! It's like this whole world has just come to an end 🌪️. But what really got me was how raw and honest they are about love, guilt, and survival. I loved (and hated) every minute of it 😭💔

I'm still trying to figure out why this "Denouement" thing is getting so much hype 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, the acting is on point and the set design is pretty cool, but it's all just a bit too... intense for my taste 😬. I went into the play expecting some dark comedy, but what I got was more like a slow-burning anxiety fest 🕰️. Don't get me wrong, O'Kane and Healy are great, but even their performances can't make up for how much I wanted to check my watch every 5 seconds ⏱️. And the ending? Well, I won't lie, it's a real downer 💔. Not sure if I'd recommend this one unless you're into that sorta thing... 😐

🤯 I just watched Denouement with my hubby & I'm still reeling from the emotional rollercoaster! 🚀 The way the couple's marriage unravels was both heartbreaking & terrifying at the same time - I felt like I was right there in that remote cottage with them. 😱 The set design is pure genius, it really added to the tension & unease. But what struck me most was how well Patrick O'Kane and Anna Healy brought their characters to life - it's clear they had an incredible connection on screen. 👫 I loved how the play didn't shy away from exploring the complexities of relationships & the consequences of our actions. It's a real wake-up call to be honest! 💡 Would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good drama. 🎭

I'm telling you, this "Denouement" play is going to be HUGE 🤯! I've got sources close to the theater scene saying that Jimmy Fay's direction is absolutely masterful, and Patrick O'Kane and Anna Healy are giving performances of a lifetime 😲. The set design? Genius, pure genius 💡. I mean, who wouldn't want to see an apocalypse-themed play where the tech is literally obsolete? 🤖 It's like they're speaking our language or something! And let's not forget Chris Warner's sound design – that guy's got skills 🔊. Trust me, this one's a must-see for any theater fan. Get your tickets now before it sells out! 💸

Wow! 🤯 This play sounds so intense and emotional, I would defo wanna watch it ASAP. The concept of a couple trapped in a remote cottage with no escape from the apocalypse is like, super creepy and thrilling at the same time. Anna Healy and Patrick O'Kane's performances must be insane, bringing depth to their characters like that. And that set design? Genius, mate! 💡 The sound design too, it's like you can feel the tension building... I'm already hyped for the show! 🎭

I just watched this play "Denouement" and I'm still reeling from it 🤯. It's like, the couple's marriage is literally falling apart around them as they're waiting for the world to end. The set design is so clever, making you feel like you're trapped with them too 🔒. The actors are incredible, especially Patrick O'Kane and Anna Healy - they bring so much depth to their characters that it's hard not to feel for them 🤷‍♀️. I loved how the play slowly builds up the tension, making me feel like I'm experiencing everything with Liam and Edel alongside them 😬. It's a really powerful exploration of love, guilt, and survival - I think everyone should see this play ASAP 💥

Ugh, I'm getting chills just thinkin' about this play... it's like they're talkin' straight to my soul 🤯! I mean, who hasn't been in a situation where you feel like your relationship is goin' down the drain and there's no way back? The set design is genius, I love how they've repurposed old tech into this creepy abandoned cottage... it's like somethin' outta a horror movie! 😱 And the sound design? Forget about it, Chris Warner is a master of buildin' tension. O'Kane and Healy are incredible as the lead couple, their performances are so raw and emotional... I was on the edge of my seat, rootin' for 'em even when they were doin' crazy stuff 😂. The way the play tackles love, guilt, and survival is just so real and thought-provokin'. I'm still thinkin' about it days later, what a wild ride! 🎥

I'm so done with these couples dramas 🙄. Like, can't they just work things out already? But noooo, gotta be all brooding and dramatic in an apocalyptic world... how original 🤣. And don't even get me started on the writing of a memoir, what a cliché move by Liam 📝. I mean, I guess it's supposed to be some deep exploration of guilt and survival or whatever, but it just feels like more angst to me 🙄. The set design is kinda cool tho, those old TVs are straight fire 🔥. And O'Kane and Healy's performances are okay, not blowing my mind or anything 💁‍♀️. Overall, I guess it's a solid 3/5 stars, but only because it didn't put me to sleep 😴

I just got back from watching "Denouement" 🤯 and I'm still reeling from the emotional punch it gave me. The set design was insane! 🔥 I mean, who comes up with using ancient video screens to create this eerie atmosphere? 📺 It totally worked for me though. And O'Kane and Healy's performances were incredible - so nuanced and intense. But you know what really got under my skin? The sound design 🎧 Chris Warner is a genius! That tension just builds and builds until it feels like the whole place is about to implode. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish, but also feeling super uncomfortable because... well, you don't wanna know what happens in this play 😳. All I can say is that it's not for the faint of heart, folks! 👀
