2026 Gasparilla expected to be ‘one of the coldest on record’; here’s what you should wear

Cold snap hits Gasparilla: dressing for record chill.

Tampa's annual Gasparilla festival is set to draw thousands to downtown this weekend, but with a severe Arctic outbreak expected to hit the state, participants can expect extremely cold conditions. Temperatures in the 40s are not as much of an issue as the howling winds gusting up to 40 mph, which will make wind chills plummet into the 30s during the parade.

To brave the elements and keep your pirate persona intact, thermal underwear is a good option to wear under your costume. Sporting goods stores or clothing sections should carry these essentials. For added warmth on the lower body, fleeced-lined leggings can also be worn under your outfit.

A windbreaker or shell jacket with windchill protection is a must-have for protecting against the 30-degree wind chill that's expected. When choosing, ensure the jacket remains breathable to allow sweat to escape while still shielding you from the cold. Fortunately, pirate jackets do exist and will keep you in costume while keeping you warm.

Dressing in layers is often touted as a cliché, but it holds true when faced with prolonged exposure to such extreme weather conditions. Berardelli advises wearing the right clothes to stay comfortable for hours on end. He plans to wear thermal underwear himself, stating, "If you wear the right clothes, you'll be fine."

Additional accessories like gloves and lip balm can help mitigate issues in cold, windy conditions. Gloves will keep your hands (or hook) warm, while lip balm provides protection against chapped lips caused by the harsh weather.

In light of these forecasts, participants should take the necessary precautions to stay comfortable during Gasparilla celebrations this weekend.

I'm not a fan of dressing up in costumes when it's gonna be that cold 🤣. I mean, who needs to dress up like a pirate when you can just wear a warm coat and some decent boots? And honestly, thermal underwear sounds super comfy. But at the same time, I love the idea of still being able to show off your costume while staying warm. Like, there's this one guy on Instagram who dresses up as a 90s video game character every year and looks adorable in his thermal pants and shell jacket combo. Maybe it's just me, but if you're gonna brave the cold, I say go all out and wear something that's both stylish and functional 😂💪

Man, I'm so hyped for Gasparilla but also super nervous about how freezing it's gonna be! Like, I get dressing up in thermal underwear and wearing a pirate jacket with wind chill protection makes total sense, right? 🤣 But seriously, can't we just have a mild winter for once? I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put on a pirate costume while freezing your tail off? 😂 On the bright side, I guess dressing in layers is kinda genius... you know, like my grandma always said! Anyway, I'm def gonna rock some thermal underwear and gloves this weekend – anyone got any sweet tips for staying warm without ruining the party vibes? ☕

I'm more excited about dressing up like a pirate in the snow than actually participating in the festival lol. Who needs treasure when you can have thermal underwear and windbreaker jackets?! I mean, can you imagine Captain Hook trying to swing his hook with frozen fingers? 😂 Thermal underwear for all, apparently!

Ugh, I'm so excited for Gasparilla but like, seriously cold 😅. I don't know how people are gonna keep their pirate costumes on with those winds 💨. Thermal underwear sounds like a lifesaver! Can we get some extra layers at the costume shops or something? And omg, gloves and lip balm too... that's just basic survival stuff now 🤣. Wish I could wear a proper windbreaker but my favorite pirate jacket is all cotton 😂. Guess dressing in layers is not so cliché after all!

ugh, gasparilla in the 30s with 40mph winds? that's crazy! i'm glad they're talking about dressing for it tho. thermal underwear is a no-brainer, but what really matters is layering - we all know that's the secret to staying comfy in extreme weather. and honestly, who wouldn't want to wear a pirate jacket just to stay warm and still rock their costume? gloves and lip balm are also super important, especially if you're gonna be out for hours like they will at the parade 🤪👕

omg u gotta bring the thermal undies under ur pirate costume tho its gonna be like 30s wind chill lol dont wanna be stuck with frostbite on ur booty 🤣 and gloves/gloves for ur hook r a must i know some ppl who got caught off guard last yr and their fingers were all numb 😂 anyway make sure to dress in layers and stay warm its not just about lookin cute 👗

omg, like totally not expecting it to be so crazy cold in tampa during gasparilla 🤯! i mean, i know its winter and all, but 40s with 40 mph winds? brrr 😲. think they should've warned us about the wind chill thing too, that's like super important for our pirate personas not to get ruined 💁‍♀️. thermal underwear is a must, and i'm def gonna invest in some fancy shell jackets 🤑. dont wanna be stuck in a cold windstorm with frozen lips, that sounds miserable 😷. so yeah, dressing in layers is key, and gloves are like, super necessary 🧤. stay warm, tampa! ❄️

omg poor ppl gonna have 2 wear thermal undies under their costumes lol its like, totally unfair 😂💤 imagine wearing a hot costume in like 30 degree weather ❄️ that would be soooo uncomfortable 💔 but on the bright side, they do have pirate jackets now so we can all stay warm & pirate-y 🎭👍

Ugh, who wants to dress up in a hot pirate costume in freezing temps? I'd rather be sipping margaritas on a beach somewhere 🌴😎. But hey, if you're gonna rock the pirate look, make sure you're all layered up with some thermal goodness under that costume. I mean, don't wanna see any frozen flesh on show... ❄️👙. And gloves are a must-have, trust me, your hands (or hook) will thank you 🤞. Don't be a fool like Marty McFly, get ready for a blast of wind chill and stay toasty! 💨

omg u guys dont even think bout goin out 2 Gasparilla w/o a windbreaker lol its gonna be SO COLD!!! 🥶♀️ i'm gettin in ther wit my thermal undies and fleeced leggings, u should too! 😂 and gloves lip balm is def a must, dont wanna freeze ur hook off or turn ur lips 2 ice cubes 💋👊

Wow 😊🌫️ I'm more worried about those people participating in the parade than the event itself. Like, what if someone hypothermia? That would be super interesting 🤔

Ugh, can't believe it's going to be THAT cold at Gasparilla 🤣! I mean, I love the pirate costumes as much as the next person, but 30-degree wind chill? That's just harsh 😅. Thermal underwear is a must, and don't even get me started on gloves – you gotta keep those hands warm or it'll be like trying to eat a frozen pizza 🍕. And lip balm? Don't forget that! You'd think it'd be all about the pirate hats and bandanas this time of year, but nope, dressing for the weather is where it's at 😂. Guess you can say we're all going to be swashbuckling like crazy with our thermal undies on 💪.

ugh dont wanna be out there in that freezing cold 🥶💨 imagine all those ppl dressed up like pirates and having to freeze their bums off lol thermal underwear cant come soon enough 😂 gotta make sure i bundle up like a burrito if i wanna enjoy the parade

Ugh, can't believe I'm gonna be freezing my butt off at Gasparilla this year 🤣😂. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have a pirate festival in the middle of winter? On the bright side, thermal underwear and fleeced-lined leggings will definitely make me feel like a proper pirate 🤘🏽💪. But seriously, dressing in layers is key, right? Don't wanna be stuck shivering on the sidelines while everyone else is having fun 😂. And can someone please tell me where I can get those cute pirate jackets with windchill protection? Need to stay warm and stylish! 💕

omg u guys gasparilla is gonna be SO COLD!!! i'm literally shivering just thinking about it 🥶❄️ i love dressing up as a pirate but like how am i supposed to have fun if i freeze my booty off? thermal underwear and fleeced-lined leggings are def a must-have for this fest, and dont even get me started on windbreakers with windchill protection - i need that breathability tho 🤔👕 it's all about dressing in layers, fam, and taking care of those extremities (hands, lips, etc) 💁‍♀️🧤

omg like i'm so worried about gasparilla this year 🤣... cold snap hitting and everything... i was thinking of wearing a big ol coat but now im not sure if its gonna make me too hot under the pirate costume... do you think thermal underwear would be comfy to wear with pants or shorts? i dont wanna freeze my butt off 😂. also, have u ever tried lip balm in the morning? mine always gets all dry and flaky 🤪

OMG, have you guys ever noticed how some foods just taste better when it's cold outside? Like, I'm talking about soup, hot chocolate, or even just a warm grilled cheese 🧀😋... I swear, there's something about the chill in the air that just makes all the comfort foods come alive! 😊 Anyway, back to Gasparilla... yeah, dressing for the cold is a must, but what if you're one of those people who gets super excited and decides to wear their costume for hours after the parade? 🤣 I've done that before and ended up freezing my butt off! 💨 Maybe just wear thermal undies and have a backup outfit ready to swap into when things get too chilly? 😅

OMG, you know what's crazy? I just saw a video of a polar bear in a tiny park near me and it was HILARIOUS 🐻😂 like, how does that even work? The little guy is just chillin', and then suddenly it's all "I'M A POLAR BEAR, HEAR ME ROAR!" and it starts running around like a maniac. Anyway, back to the Gasparilla thing... thermal underwear sounds kinda comfy, but what if you get too warm? Like, do you just take off your whole pirate outfit or something? 🤔👕

It's crazy how nature can be so unforgiving and unpredictable! This cold snap is like a harsh teacher showing us that sometimes we gotta toughen up and dress for the conditions 🥶👗...I mean, who knew thermal underwear could be cool under the pirate costume? Seriously though, it's all about being prepared and respecting the elements. We can't control the weather, but we can control how we prepare ourselves to face it. So, let's take a page from Berardelli's book and dress in layers – it's not just a cliché, it's a lifesaver! 💡
