8 essential NYC concerts to see in February

February is shaping up to be a fantastic month for music lovers in New York City. From romantic jazz ballads to raunchy club bangers and everything in between, there's something for every taste.

First off, fans of old-school rock will want to catch Sheer Mag at Mercury Lounge on February 27th or TV Eye on February 28th. This Philly quartet is a breath of fresh air, blending the raw energy of '70s and '80s hard rock with the lush songcraft of AM radio's heyday. Think Judas Priest covering Fleetwood Mac – that's what you're in for.

In other news, the pioneering Detroit techno collective Underground Resistance is taking over Queens' Nowadays on February 1st. Led by "Mad" Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, this group has been pushing against the mainstream since the late '80s, delivering psychedelic beatscapes that are sure to blow your mind.

Local music fans will be thrilled to see engineer Adam Reich – aka Real Young and Lazy Horse – bring his band to Union Pool on February 1st. This is a Winterlong Residency like no other, with Reich and his crew shaking things up with Neil Young classics at Williamsburg's favorite burger joint.

ESG is another quintessential New York band that shouldn't be missed. Formed in the '70s by four Scroggins sisters from the South Bronx, this band has been making waves since the early days of post-punk. Their danceable funk sound is infectious and iconic – don't miss their Final Dance Tour show at Elsewhere on February 13th.

Valentine's Day wouldn't be complete without a dose of romance. Jazz legend Dianne Reeves will be gracing the stage of Jazz at Lincoln Center: Rose Theater with her annual mid-February stand, featuring timeless jazz standards arranged in fresh and exciting ways. It's a class act that won't disappoint.

For those who crave something a bit more laid-back, saxophonist Gary Bartz will be at Le Poisson Rouge on February 26th. This veteran of the jazz scene has been making waves since his days with Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner – don't miss his latest album showcase for all to see.

Finally, if you're looking for a night that's anything but tame, Peaches + Model/Actriz are bringing their notorious NSFW dance party to Knockdown Center on February 28th. With support from industrial-punk duo Model/Actriz, this is the ultimate show for those who live life on the edge.

Last but not least, Mavis Staples will be taking the stage of Beacon Theatre with singer-songwriter Allison Russell, along with a slew of special guests, including Buddy Guy and Jeff Tweedy. It's a night that promises to be unforgettable – with conviction, warmth, and an entire generation of talented musicians joining forces under one roof.

omg, like whoa! February is gonna be EPIC!!! 💥 I'm so down for the Sheer Mag show, they sound so underrated... and Underground Resistance is giving me major techno vibes 🤯! And can we talk about how much I love ESG?! Their funk sound is literally the best 🕺. And Dianne Reeves is a total legend, always been my fave jazz singer 😍. Gary Bartz is another one of those sax players who just makes you wanna chill and listen to music all day... sounds like my kinda night 💤. But omg, Peaches + Model/Actriz are bringing that wild energy I need after a long week 😂! And the Mavis Staples show with Allison Russell and Buddy Guy?! That's gonna be LIFE. CHANGING 🙌💖

I'm so over all these romantic jazz ballads 🙄 February is literally just another month where everyone fawns all over old-school rock and then gets weirdly obsessed with techno beats 🤪 Like, can't we just have a little bit of everything for once? A bunch of shows featuring the same old NYC bands playing the same old sets is not exactly exciting to me 😴 And don't even get me started on Peaches + Model/Actriz's NSFW dance party... isn't that just gonna be a bunch of people being loud and rowdy? 🤪 I mean, I guess it's cool if that's your thing, but can't we have some variety for once? 😒

I'm really craving some good ol' fashioned burgers this month... I mean, have you tried the new bacon jam they're serving at Union Pool? I swear, it's the perfect topping for a lazy Sunday evening. And speaking of lazy Sundays, I've been meaning to try out that new outdoor furniture store in Brooklyn - have you heard anything about it? I'm looking for some comfy seats for my living room...

Sheer Mag's gonna bring the rock vibes at Mercury Lounge, Underground Resistance is gonna blow our minds at Nowadays, and ESG is gonna get this party started with their funky beats at Elsewhere... it's like a musical dream come true! 🤩 And can we talk about Mavis Staples?! I'm so down for this month in NYC 🤩 but at the same time, I don't know if I wanna rush around like crazy to see all these shows 🤯 February's supposed to be romantic, huh? Jazz legend Dianne Reeves sounds amazing, though 😍. But she's got some stiff competition from Peaches + Model/Actriz – are they really gonna bring that NSFW energy 🤪 or is it just a marketing gimmick? I don't know... Sheer Mag and TV Eye sound awesome, but aren't those old-school rock vibes kinda overplayed right now 🎸. And what's up with the Underground Resistance show – are they still pushing boundaries or just playing for nostalgia seekers? 🤔
