A quick fix for broken zips – and 84 other tips to keep your clothes looking good

Sticky situation: stop tights laddering with simple care. To avoid the dreaded ladder, buy high-quality tights with elastane and reinforced toes, as suggested by The Seam's founder Layla Sargent. Wear them carefully, avoiding rough shoes and sharp nails, and always on a cold wash cycle.

Whiter whites? Follow Rajiv Surendra's tips: wash your whites separately from everything else, using hot water and the hottest detergent possible. Idriz Ade recommends avoiding over-deterging, which can cause greying, while Mrs Stewart's Bluing is a safer alternative for brightening.

To prevent underarms looking grimy, try Shout Advanced Ultra Concentrated Gel or Karen Bentley-Brown's cotton-sweat shield method. For tough stains like red wine or ink, there are various treatments available, from bicarbonate of soda to rubbing alcohol. If all else fails, consider creative patching or professional stain removal.

Flattened necklines? Try hairspray for a quick fix, while Sargent recommends sewing the collar back into shape with a tailor's expertise. De Castro advises inspecting clothes carefully before buying and spotting wonky stitches or loose threads.

To mend holes in socks, Gay Bennett recommends darning – a simple yet effective technique that can be learned online. But prevention is key: replace your old socks regularly to avoid thinning.

For knitwear like cardigans, anti-moth measures are crucial: cedar blocks, lavender sachets, and storing them on sunny days can keep moths at bay. If a hole appears, stop wearing immediately and try mending with fabric shavers or wool combs.

Sticky shirt collars? Try hairspray for an instant fix, while avoiding over-washing and tumble-drying. Storage tricks like using collar inserts can also maintain shape.

Leather cracking and dulling? Regular cleaning and conditioning are essential: avoid heat and water exposure, use the right conditioner or soap, and store leather away from direct sunlight.
