ABC13 Weather Watch due to the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms

Southeast Texas Braces for Scorching Temperatures and Sudden Storms

A scorching hot January day is ahead, with temperatures starting at a relatively mild 70 degrees but warming up to a sizzling 80 degrees by the afternoon. However, this pleasant weather will be short-lived as a cold front slowly makes its way through the region, bringing showers, thunderstorms, and potentially even severe weather.

The National Weather Service has issued an ABC13 Weather Watch due to the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of the Friday night cold front. While there's only a small chance of scattered showers in the morning, that chance increases significantly during the afternoon and evening, with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms expected to develop.

Primary threats from these storms will be damaging winds and large hail, but isolated severe storms could also produce brief tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has given southeast Texas a relatively low 5-15% chance of severe weather on Friday, but that doesn't mean you should underestimate the potential for gusty winds or hail.

In fact, heavier storms could produce 1-3 inches of rain, potentially leading to temporary flooding in some areas. Marathon weekend will be chilly and grey, with temperatures only reaching the mid-50s by Saturday and low 60s on Sunday. While there's currently no sign of freezing weather, signals are emerging that a colder pattern may develop across Canada and the US during the second half of January.

Stay ahead of the storm and check back for updates from ABC13 Weather Watch.

omg can't believe it's already mid-January we're supposed to be in winter mode but i guess not lol 70 degrees by afternoon is crazy talk what if we get some actual snow instead? and 1-3 inches of rain could cause some major flooding idk how our storm drains are gonna handle that btw the 50s on Sat and low 60s on Sun sounds like a total snooze fest can we just stay in bed forever? 🤪☁️

Seems like Texas is about to go from sunshine to crazy storms in like 2 seconds 🤯. I mean, I get it, weather can be super unpredictable, but this cold front coming in on Friday looks like it's gonna cause some major issues. Heavy rain and hail are one thing, but the potential for brief tornadoes? That's a whole different story ⛈️. And don't even get me started on the temp drop this weekend - from 80s to mid-50s in just two days? Brrr ❄️. Guess you gotta stay tuned and check those weather updates if you're planning on heading out this weekend!

omg its gonna be like 80 degrees in january lol... but seriously, i dont think people r prepared 4 this cold front thats comin in. we need 2 stock up on umbrellas & raincoats ASAP! 😂 and yeah, 1-3 inches of rain cud cause some problems 🌊 tempuratures dropin 2 mid 50s tho? that sounds pretty chilly... marathon weekend should be all about layering up & staying cozy ❄️

OMG this is crazy! Like, I get it, weather can be unpredictable but 80 degrees in Jan? That's like wearing shorts to school lol. But at the same time, I'm kinda hyped for the thunderstorms, I love watching them roll in on a Friday evening. My thing is though, why do they always say there's only a small chance of bad weather and then BAM! You're stuck with hail and wind? Like, can't they just give us a heads up or something? And what's up with the temp drop after Marathon weekend? Like, I was stoked for my fitness goals but now I'm gonna have to bundle up just like it's winter again. 🤣💨

omg can u believe how weird january is in texas? one day its 80 degrees and then BAM cold front hits and its like 50s lol anyway did u know that my favorite coffee shop just opened up a new location like 5 mins away from me? i'm literally so excited to try their new winter menu 🤗👀

Ugh, just what we need... another Texas-sized headache 🤯. Like, can't we have one day without drama? First it's scorching hot, then suddenly cold, now storms are coming in like a bad movie villain ⛈️. I swear, weather forecasters must be secretly trying to make our lives more complicated. And 1-3 inches of rain, yay! Because nothing says "good time" like potential flooding 😒. But hey, at least it's not the end of the world... yet 🤞.

Ugh I'm so over these weather forecasters always being right on track... like we don't know how to deal with some decent unpredictable weather around here? I mean, who needs sunshine all day when you can have a good chance of getting pummeled by hail and strong winds? And 1-3 inches of rain isn't even that much, it's just a little water. We should be celebrating the rain, not freaking out about potential flooding. And don't even get me started on the whole "cold front" thing... like we're gonna magically turn into polar bears or something if we get a little cold. Bring on the storms, I say! 🌪️

oof, southeast texas is about to get WILD! 😬 i hope everyone is prepared for those scorching hot temps followed by sudden storms that could bring heavy rain & hail. let's all just take a deep breath and stay safe, ya know? ⚡️ the storm prediction center might say there's only a 5-15% chance of severe weather, but we can't count out Mother Nature 🌪️. anyone got their umbrella ready for marathon weekend? ☔

omg I'm so over this crazy weather in texas already it's like 1 day we're swimming in our pool and the next day we're dodging hailstones 🤯😂 i swear my plants are gonna hate me if it rains again, they cant take all that water 😭💧 anyway, gotta be prepared for whatever comes next, hope everyone stays safe out there ⚠️🌪️

🌡️ Ugh, I hate when the weather is all over the place like this... one day it's sunny, next day it's pouring rain 🌨️. Can't even plan a trip to Southeast Texas right now without worrying about scorching temps and sudden storms. And 1-3 inches of rain? That's a lot for just one day! I'm thinking of canceling my plans for Marathon weekend too, don't wanna get caught in the grey and chilly 😔. But at least it's not going to be freezing, right? 🙅‍♂️

Ugh, can't believe it's already mid-January... feels like just yesterday I was binge-watching old movies on Netflix 🍿😴. Anyway, gotta stay vigilant about this crazy weather forecast! 70 degrees in January? That sounds like a lovely day out, but then BAM, severe thunderstorms hit and everything goes downhill ☁️💥. And don't even get me started on the potential for tornadoes... that's just too much for one day 🌪️😱. I hope everyone stays safe and dry, especially during those heavy storms that could cause flooding 🌊😩. On a lighter note, I wish they'd predict some decent weather for Marathon weekend... low 60s? That sounds more like winter than Texas 🏃‍♀️❄️. Guess it's time to break out the umbrella and cozy sweaters ☔🧶!
