OpenAI to Start Testing Ads on ChatGPT in Coming Weeks
ChatGPT, the popular AI-powered chatbot, is set to start showing sponsored products and services related to users' conversations. The move comes as OpenAI aims to expand its user base by offering a freer version of the app with fewer usage limits.
According to an announcement made on Friday, logged-in US users who access ChatGPT for free or have a paid subscription (ChatGPT Go) will see ads on the platform. However, OpenAI assures that these ads will not compromise the conversational experience and that users' data will be kept private from advertisers.
The ads will appear in a separate area at the bottom of the chat window and are described as "clearly labeled." Advertisers also won't influence the answers ChatGPT provides, which will remain optimized based on what's most helpful to the user.
On the other hand, users who have opted for paid plans (ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise) won't see ads. The $8/month ChatGPT Go plan is now available in the US and includes ads. Users under 18 will not see ads, nor will they appear near sensitive topics related to health, mental health, or politics.
OpenAI has been testing app promotions since December but eventually rolled back the changes after some users expressed frustration with the update. This new initiative aims to allow more people to use ChatGPT's tools without usage limits.
The move comes as OpenAI seeks to monetize its AI technology while maintaining user trust and experience.
