Algeria pardons French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal

French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, an 81-year-old author known for his scathing criticism of Algerian authorities and Islamists, has been granted a humanitarian pardon by Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The pardon came after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Algeria to free Sansal, who had been sentenced to five years in prison for comments deemed harmful to national unity.

Sansal was arrested in November 2024 and sentenced on appeal in July 2025, sparking outrage among his supporters and deepening a diplomatic rift between France and Algeria. The Algerian government viewed Sansal's statements as an affront to its national sovereignty, particularly when he criticized France for unfairly ceding Moroccan territory during the colonial era.

German President Steinmeier thanked Tebboune for the "humanitarian gesture" that demonstrates the strong relations and trust between Germany and Algeria. Steinmeier also announced that Germany would be responsible for Sansal's transfer and treatment, as the author suffers from prostate cancer.

The pardon has been welcomed by Sansal's daughter, Sabeha, who expressed her relief in a phone call from her home in the Czech Republic. "I was a little pessimistic because he is sick, he is old, and he could have died there," she said. "I hope we will see each other soon."

Sansal, an economist-turned-novelist, has been a vocal critic of Algerian authorities and Islamists throughout his career. He has received several international prizes for his work, including in France and Germany. In recent years, Germany has offered refuge to several high-profile prisoners from other countries.

The pardon marks a significant development in the diplomatic crisis between Paris and Algiers, which has led to the expulsion of officials on both sides, the recall of ambassadors, and restrictions on holders of diplomatic visas. French President Emmanuel Macron thanked his counterparts in Algiers and Berlin for Sansal's release on humanitarian grounds, while also expressing gratitude to Tebboune for the "humanitarian gesture".

πŸ€” JUST WHEN YOU THINK THE WORLD HAS NO SOUL ANYMORE, ALGERIA GRANTS HUMANITARIAN PARDON TO 81-YEAR-OLD WRITER BOUALEM SANSAL! πŸ™Œ IT'S ABOUT TIME! I MEAN, WHO NEEDS A PRISON SENTENCE FOR SPEAKING TRUTH? 😩 especially when the guy's got prostate cancer and is 81 years old. I FEEL BAD FOR HIS DAUGHTER WHO HAD TO LIVE WITH THE WORRY OF HER DAD BEING LOCKED UP. πŸ€— BUT WHAT'S REALLY NICE IS THAT GERMAN PRESIDENT STEINMEIER STEPPED IN AND HELPED MAKE THIS HAPPEN. πŸ’• IT SHOWS THAT EVEN IN THESE TROUBLED TIMES, WE STILL HAVE PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO CARE ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF! πŸ™

OMG u guys I just read that Boualem Sansal got pardoned 🀩 81yo author was sentenced 2 5 yrs in prison 4 his comments about Algeria's authorities & Islamists but Germany intervened & got him a humanitarian pardon πŸ’• he's got prostate cancer so this is def a good thing for him πŸ˜”

I feel bad 4 France & its president Macron coz he didn't want 2 intervene but I guess they had 2 prioritize human rights over diplomatic relations πŸ™ my aunt was in Algeria last year & she said the ppl r super nice & welcoming 🌞 anyway, I'm just glad Sansal's gonna be alright now πŸ’—

I guess it's about time Algeria decided to show some mercy after all those years of "criticism"... I mean, who needs freedom of speech when you can just silence your critics with a little pardon? πŸ™„ Anyway, nice job, Germany, for using your diplomatic clout to get him out. Prostate cancer is no joke, so let's hope he gets the treatment he needs and doesn't have to face any more "adventures" in Algerian prisons. The fact that his daughter had to make a phone call from the Czech Republic to find out he was okay shows just how "reassuring" Algeria can be... πŸ’•

πŸ€” I think it's a bit surprising that Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune would grant Boualem Sansal a pardon after his imprisonment sparked such a diplomatic rift with France. It seems like a calculated move to ease tensions between the two countries, but also raises questions about the motivations behind the decision πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. On one hand, it's heartening to see Germany stepping in to support Sansal and help facilitate his transfer, especially given his health issues πŸ’Š. On the other hand, I wonder if this pardon is more of a PR stunt than an genuine attempt at reconciliation between Algeria and France 🀝. Nonetheless, it's certainly a positive development for Sansal and his family πŸ‘.

omg I cant believe this is real! Boualem Sansal was literally locked up in Algeria for just saying some stuff that the gov said was bad... it's crazy how one guy can spark such a big reaction from whole countries 🀯. and its not like he did anything wrong, just spoke his mind... Germany stepped in and helped him out which is super cool, I guess we should be happy that he's free now 😊. but also kinda weird that the German president had to go all the way to save this guy... why can't France or other countries help their own people? πŸ€”.

The pardon of Boualem Sansal is a reminder that age can be a powerful catalyst for change πŸ•°οΈ. At 81, Sansal has lived through decades of turmoil and oppression, yet he continues to speak truth to power with courage and conviction. His case highlights the importance of empathy and compassion in leadership πŸ‘₯. By granting Sansal a pardon on humanitarian grounds, President Tebboune is showing that even the most entrenched differences can be bridged by understanding and kindness ❀️. It's also a testament to the strong relationship between Germany and Algeria πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡«πŸ‡·. As we reflect on this development, let us remember the power of gentle pressure and diplomacy in resolving conflicts without resorting to harsh measures πŸ’‘.

🀝 I think this pardon is a good thing, don't get me wrong, but it feels like it was done more because of Germany's pressure than actually Algeria being all about freeing Sansal. Like, what if they didn't have to answer to Steinmeier? Would the decision still be made? I'm not saying they're bad for releasing him or anything, but it just seems... convenient 😐

😊 This is a good news, right? I mean, an 81-year-old man gets pardoned after being locked up for his opinions. It's like the Algerian government said, 'you know what, Boualem Sansal might be old and sick, but he's also still got something to say'. πŸ™ Plus, it shows that even in a diplomatic crisis, there are people on both sides who can find common ground. Germany stepping up to help him with his prostate cancer is just the cherry on top! πŸ’Š And I love how Sabeha was like 'I'm relieved he's free', instead of being all bitter and stuff. It's about time we focus on human rights over national sovereignty, don't you think? πŸ€—

You gotta think about this pardon as a lesson in diplomacy 🀝... I mean, when Steinmeier stepped in, he wasn't trying to save Sansal from prison just for his own sake, but for the sake of Germany-Algeria relations too. It's all about balance, you know? The US or UK could've done something like this and expected gratitude without any strings attached πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... But Steinmeier didn't do that; he went out on a limb to help Sansal while keeping the diplomatic channels open. That takes guts and some serious human compassion πŸ’•. So yeah, it's about finding ways to address conflicts without tearing each other apart – that's the real lesson here 🀝

Ugh my heart is actually breaking reading this 😭... like Boualem Sansal has been through so much already. 5 years in prison for just speaking his mind?!?! That's not freedom of speech, that's torture 🀯. And now he gets a pardon because Germany stepped in and was like "hey, no thanks to the whole world". I mean, what's next? Are we gonna start pardoning people who say things that make us uncomfortable? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

And can you even imagine having prostate cancer while being stuck in prison?!?! He's lucky to be alive right now. I hope his daughter is taking care of him and not letting anyone take advantage of him πŸ’•. This pardon isn't just a victory for Sansal, it's also a reminder that we need more countries like Germany who actually care about human rights 🌎.

But you know what really gets me? It's the fact that all this drama was sparked by someone saying something that France and Algeria didn't want to hear πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I mean, shouldn't we be encouraging people to speak up and challenge our governments instead of silencing them?!?! That's what freedom is all about πŸ’ͺ.

🀯 just heard about Boualem Sansal getting pardoned by Algeria's President πŸ™, I'm low-key shocked it took this long! The dude's been vocal about critiquing Algerian authorities and Islamists, which is no easy feat πŸ”₯. Now he can focus on his prostate cancer treatment (sorry to hear that πŸ˜”) without the added stress of being stuck in prison.

Germany stepping up to help with transfer & treatment πŸ™Œ, that's super cool! And it looks like this pardon marks a good step towards resolving the diplomatic crisis between France & Algeria πŸš€. I'm glad Sabeha Sansal is relieved too 😊, can't wait for her dad to be reunited with family πŸ‘«. Now let's see what's next for Boualem... will he keep writing from his new 'freedom' πŸ’‘?

OMG, this is so cool 🀩! Boualem Sansal has been stuck in Algeria for ages and now he's finally free πŸ’₯! I mean, 81 is old to be in prison, right? 😬 He's got prostate cancer too, which makes it even more amazing that Germany stepped in to help him out. It's like they're saying "Hey, we've got your back, Boualem!" πŸ™Œ Germany's always been good at giving refuge to writers and intellectuals who are being persecuted, so it's no surprise they'd do this for Sansal. And I'm glad his daughter is relieved – she must have been going through hell worrying about her dad 😩. This pardon is like a big ol' hug from the international community πŸ€—, and it just shows that sometimes, governments can come together to do something really good πŸ’•!

omg u no how many ppl r worried bout boualem sansal?? he just got pardoned 4 his comments about algerian authorities & islamists lol like what took them so lomg?? i feel bad 4 him tho, cant imagine havin prostate cancer & bein locked up πŸ€•πŸ’‰. germany did good by takin care of him though! tebboune should get props 4 grantin him pardon tho, its a big deal esp since france & algeria r goin thru a diplomatic crisis rn 🀝🌎. its not rite that sansal had to go thru all this 4 speakin his mind tho, u feel? πŸ€”

πŸ™ I'm so relieved Boualem Sansal is finally free! 81 is old, right? 🀣 Cancer too... Germany should've done this ages ago. Anyway, now that he's out, I wonder if Macron will still push for those Morocco territory thingies. Algeria's got some serious nerve critiquing France over that colonial history stuff. Germany's move just shows how diplomatic relations can be super complicated. And honestly, what about the rest of Sansal's crew? Are they coming too? πŸ€”πŸ‘€

aww yay yay yay!!! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘ cant believe its happening!!! french-algerian writer boualem sansal is finally free!!! 😊 he deserves so much love and respect 80+ years young and still fighting for what he believes in πŸ’ͺ cant wait to see him reunited with his daughter πŸ€— this pardon is a huge win for france and germany too πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ lets keep the positivity vibes going πŸŒˆπŸ’•

Interesting 😊 The fact that Germany stepped in to help negotiate Boualem Sansal's release is a big deal! I mean, who knew they had those kinds of connections? πŸ€” It's like they're saying 'hey, we got your back' on this one. And can you believe Algeria granted him pardon after all the drama? 🀯 It's crazy how these diplomatic rifts can get so heated and then suddenly resolve themselves in a heartbeat πŸ’₯

omg is it even surprising that Germany had to step in and save Boualem Sansal like he was a caged animal waiting for a hero πŸ™„ anyway good job Germany for being all diplomatic and whatnot, I'm sure the French were just sitting around twiddling their thumbs wondering how they could get their favorite writer out of this mess πŸ˜’ it's kinda sad that Algeria had to do this though - not because I condone Sansal's views or anything (he's still a bit of a contrarian for my taste) but because he was in his 80s and had prostate cancer, poor guy needed some TLC πŸ€•

I think this pardon is a good sign that Algeria values its relations with Germany, and it shows some empathy towards Boualem Sansal πŸ™. The fact that Steinmeier was able to persuade Tebboune to grant the pardon, especially considering the sensitive nature of the case, is quite impressive. It's also interesting to see how this decision can help ease tensions between France and Algeria - both countries have been acting quite frosty towards each other lately ❄️.

It's great that Germany has taken responsibility for Sansal's transfer and treatment, given his health issues πŸ€•. The pardon comes at a time when diplomatic relations are crucial, so it's essential to resolve these kinds of issues amicably. The fact that Tebboune granted the pardon on humanitarian grounds shows that Algeria is willing to put aside its differences with France for now πŸ‘Œ.

One thing to consider is how this development will affect future diplomatic talks between Paris and Algiers πŸ€”. Will it lead to a thaw in relations, or is it just a one-off gesture? Time will tell 😊.
