A Nigerian police officer, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a fatal crash that killed two people on December 29.
Kayode was behind the wheel of Anthony Joshua's Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary lorry carrying soya beans on a busy highway in Lagos, Nigeria. The tyre burst while trying to overtake another vehicle, sending the SUV careening into the stationary truck.
The incident occurred at high speed, leaving two passengers, personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami, dead at the scene. Joshua and Kayode escaped with minor injuries.
Prosecutors have alleged that Kayode was driving without a valid licence and failed to exercise due care while driving. He has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, as well as driving without a valid licence and "driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property."
Kayode will appear in court on January 20 and has been granted bail of 5m naira (Β£2,580). However, he will remain in custody until he meets the conditions.
The incident comes just days after Joshua celebrated his victory against YouTuber Jake Paul in the US. A spokesperson for the Ogun state government said: "Both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time."
The crash has raised concerns about road safety in Nigeria, with officials stating that they believe the vehicle was travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.
