Anthony Joshua's Driver Charged with Deadly Recklessness on Nigerian Roads
A 46-year-old driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was behind the wheel of a luxury SUV carrying heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua when it crashed into a stationary lorry on Nigeria's busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The incident, which occurred last month, claimed the lives of two people, including Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele.
According to investigators, Kayode was driving at an excessive speed and failed to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles before swerving into the hard shoulder to overtake another car. The SUV then collided with the stationary lorry carrying soya beans, which was parked on the hard shoulder.
Joshua and his strength coach, Sina Ghami, also suffered minor injuries in the crash, while Kayode faced serious charges, including driving without a valid license, "driving without due care and attention," and causing bodily harm. He is set to appear in court on January 20th.
Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with multiple vehicles piling up after the collision. The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that speed was likely a factor in the crash, with investigators believing the SUV was traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.
Joshua's team, including his mother, reportedly visited the funeral home to pay their respects to the victims' friends and family. Joshua himself was taken to hospital for observation after suffering minor injuries but was later cleared to be released after a medical assessment.
