Ardal O'Hanlon: 'I fell asleep on stage once – I could hear someone doing my material, got annoyed and woke up'

Ardal O'Hanlon's Unapologetic Humour and Outrageous Antics Behind the Scenes of His Biggest Roles.

Comedian, actor and writer Ardal O'Hanlon is known for his sharp wit and ability to find humour in even the most mundane situations. But behind the scenes, things aren't always as easy-going as they appear on stage or screen. In an interview with a UK magazine, O'Hanlon opened up about some of his most embarrassing moments, from falling asleep on stage to getting into heated arguments with celebrities.

One of the funniest anecdotes from O'Hanlon's recent interview was about how he once fell asleep on stage during a performance in Belfast. The comedian explained that it had been a long night and he was feeling fine until he heard someone doing his material, at which point he woke up to find himself on stage. "It was an out-of-body experience," O'Hanlon recalled with amusement.

O'Hanlon has also shared stories about his experiences working as a stand-up comedian in prisons for murderers and thieves. While the murderers were reportedly entertaining, O'Hanlon described the sex offenders he met as "unpleasant" and unrepentant. He added that he didn't believe they benefited from his visits.

Despite his tough exterior, O'Hanlon has also revealed himself to be a fanboy when it comes to certain celebrities. In one memorable story, O'Hanlon shared an encounter with Van Morrison backstage at an event in Dublin, where the musician became enraged over someone using his toilet. To O'Hanlon's surprise, however, Van Morrison later gave him a friendly head-butt.

O'Hanlon has also worked on a number of TV shows and films throughout his career. He is perhaps best known for playing the lovable but eccentric character Father Dougal in the cult sitcom Father Ted. When asked about his most cringeworthy run-in with another celebrity, O'Hanlon revealed that it was actually a friendly encounter with Van Morrison.

When asked what he would do if he were invisible for the day, O'Hanlon joked that he might rearrange everyone's shoes on his street. "Or is that creepy?" he added, suggesting that maybe this isn't something one should try at home.

Finally, when asked about his own personal experiences with embarrassing situations and whether they had affected him over time, O'Hanlon revealed that he has a rather out-of-date item in his fridge - three years-old sauerkraut.

lol ol ardal o hanlon is like the ultimate awkward guy lol i mean who falls asleep on stage during a performance? 😂 that's just wild! and omg van morrison giving him a head butt after getting angry over someone using his toilet 🤣 i can just imagine that scene. but for real, it's crazy how he just rolls with these situations like they're no big deal. like three years old sauerkraut in the fridge tho? 🥒 is that still good? 🤷‍♂️

I think it's amazing how Ardal O'Hanlon can poke fun at himself for being human. I mean, who hasn't had an embarrassing moment on stage or backstage? It's like he's saying, yeah I'm not perfect, but at least I can laugh at myself 🤣. And I love that he had a friendly encounter with Van Morrison after getting into a bit of trouble - it just goes to show you never know what's gonna happen behind the scenes. Plus, who wouldn't want to see someone rearranging everyone's shoes? That sounds like a right old kerfuffle 😂!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how someone can be so hilarious on stage but behind the scenes have some seriously awkward moments... I mean Ardal's got this whole "unapologetic humour" thing down pat, but it sounds like even he has his limits 🤣. Getting into heated arguments with celebrities and having to deal with sex offenders in prison... that's not exactly something you can just laugh off.

And can we talk about Van Morrison for a second? Like, what's up with him? 😂 One minute he's giving O'Hanlon a head-butt after getting enraged over someone using his toilet, and the next, he's being super nice. I guess that's just part of the package when you're dealing with famous people.

But on a more serious note, it's impressive that Ardal can find humour in even the darkest situations... I mean, falling asleep on stage? That's some quality material right there 😂. And using sauerkraut as a coping mechanism? Genius (or crazy?) 👍

🤣 Ardal O'Hanlon seems like a really down-to-earth guy despite being in the spotlight all the time 🌟. I love how he pokes fun at himself, even when it comes to his most embarrassing moments 😂. But what's interesting is that behind those laughs and jokes, there are some pretty serious stories about meeting people in prison 🚔. Does anyone think prisons should be used for rehabilitation or just punishment? 🤔 Should comedians be doing time with the toughest crowd? 💭

aww man, can u believe this guy falls asleep on stage lol 🤣 i feel like weve all been there right? but what's amazing about Ardal is that even when things get crazy behind the scenes, he finds a way to laugh at himself and make fun of it 😂. his honesty and self-deprecation are really inspiring, especially when he talks about working with some pretty intense people in prisons. i think its so brave of him to share those stories and show us that even in tough situations, there's always room for kindness and humor ❤️. and omg three-year-old sauerkraut in the fridge? 🤯 definitely not something i'd be proud of either 😂
