'Armed queers don't get bashed': On its first anniversary, LGBTQ gun group in Pa. reflects on year of national turmoil

Title: The Unlikely Guardians of LGBTQ+ Safety: Meet the Pink Pistols

In a world where hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community have doubled in just nine years, an unlikely group of activists is rising up to defend their rights – armed with guns. The Pink Pistols, a nonpartisan network dedicated to the safe and responsible use of firearms for self-defense, has been making waves across the United States and Canada since its inception last year.

The movement began as a response to the growing national turmoil surrounding gender and sexual identity. Kevin Edler and his wife Lex, both queer and gun enthusiasts, decided to start a chapter in their hometown of Pittsburgh. Their mission was simple: to empower LGBTQ+ individuals with the tools and confidence to defend themselves against hate crimes.

"I think when you hear 'LGBT community' and then you hear 'firearms training,' a lot of people instinctively think these are leftists, these are liberals," Lex explained in an interview. "But that's not part of our mission at all. It doesn't matter whether you're a liberal, conservative or something else. If you're an American citizen, you have a right to keep and bear arms."

The Pink Pistols' approach is centered around community building and education. Members receive training on gun safety protocols, self-defense techniques, and the importance of responsible firearms ownership. The group also organizes regular events, such as gun range days and Stop the Bleed trainings, which aim to promote unity and confidence among its members.

As the Pink Pistols continue to grow in membership, they are facing an unexpected surge of support from straight allies who recognize the value of defending LGBTQ+ rights. "We've seen a lot of straight folks who just recognize that an assault to anybody's rights is kind of an assault on all of our rights," Lex said.

The group's commitment to nonpartisanship has been key to its success, attracting members from diverse backgrounds and ideologies. For Kevin Edler, gun ownership has become a means to take control of his own safety and confidence. "I've had a lot of fun since becoming a firearms owner... It's instilled a lot of confidence in me having a sport and something to train with."

As the Pink Pistols look to the future, they remain committed to their core mission: protecting the rights and safety of the LGBTQ+ community through education, community building, and self-defense. In a world where hate crimes are on the rise, this unlikely group of guardians is standing tall – armed with guns and a determination to defend what matters most.

"We assure people and give them the confidence that they deserve to be seen in public," Kevin said. "We don't want people to stay inside and stay afraid. We need to be seen, for the sake of ourselves and everyone else."

OMG u guys I'm literally SHOOK by these Pink Pistols!!! 🤯 They're like the ultimate self-defense squad for the LGBTQ+ community and it's SO inspired to see them taking matters into their own hands 💪🔫. I mean, who would've thought that gun training could be a way to empower people and build a sense of unity? 🤷‍♀️ It just goes to show that we don't have to choose between being safe and speaking out for what's right... we can do BOTH 💯! And can we talk about how awesome it is that they're keeping it nonpartisan? 🙌 That's like the ultimate sign of strength, not weakness. I'm SO here for this movement and I hope more people join them in taking a stand against hate crimes 🚫💕

🤷‍♂️ I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not... Like, on one hand, who doesn't want to feel safe in their community? 🤝 But on the other hand, isn't gun ownership kinda associated with, like, super conservative stuff? 😐 And what about people who don't own guns but still wanna protect themselves? Shouldn't we be looking for non-violent ways to defend ourselves too? 🤔 I mean, I'm all for community building and education, but is this really the best way to do it? 🤷‍♂️

can you believe this? its actually kinda cool that theres a group out there using guns 2 protect ppl from hate crimes lol 1st tho i wish more ppl would just calm down & talk thru their issues instead of resorting 2 violence or hate speech 🤷‍♀️🔫

🤔 I think its kinda cool that people are taking matters into their own hands to protect each other 🤝, but also a bit worried that things might get out of hand 😬...I mean, guns can be super scary, right? 🎯 At the same time, if it helps people feel safer and more confident, idc 💁‍♀️

I've been reading about this group The Pink Pistols 🤝 and I'm actually kinda impressed? Like they're doing something that might seem counterintuitive at first but it's coming from a place of wanting to protect people. They're not all about gun ownership, but also about community and education - which is pretty cool. It's like they're saying "hey, we believe in your rights too" rather than "we'll take care of you". And I love how they're getting support from straight allies who get it 🤝. It shows that even people with different backgrounds can come together on this stuff. Maybe this is a way to break down some barriers and get more people involved? We need all hands on deck when it comes to fighting for equality 💪

I think it's awesome 🤩 how these Pink Pistols are rising up to defend their community! It's not about taking a stance on politics, but about protecting each other's rights & safety 💪. I mean, who wouldn't want to learn self-defense techniques & feel more confident in public? It's all about empowering people to take care of themselves 🚀. And hey, it's great to see straight allies coming together with the community to support their cause 🤝. Let's spread some love and positivity instead of hate 💕.

this is such an inspiring story 🙌, I mean think about it - a group of LGBTQ+ individuals who are using their passion for guns to defend themselves and their community... its like they're saying "hey, we're not going anywhere" 💪. and the best part is, its not just about self-defense, its also about building a community where people feel safe and confident to be themselves 🌈. I love how they're making gun safety training accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or ideology - it's like, we're all in this together 🤝. and the fact that straight allies are joining them is just awesome 💕, its proof that even across party lines, people can come together for a common cause 🌈💖
