At least 36,000 Sudanese have fled since fall of El Fasher to RSF, says UN agency

Sudan on Brink as 36,825 Flee Conflict Zone Amid "Horrific" Humanitarian Crisis

The fall of El Fasher, a strategic city in North Kordofan state, has sent shockwaves through Sudan's embattled nation, prompting over 36,825 people to flee the area in just five days. The displaced individuals, mostly on foot, have been forced to seek refuge in Tawila, a town west of El Fasher that is already hosting an astonishing 652,000 displaced people.

The situation has been described as "horrific" by Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who warned that history is repeating itself in Darfur. The region has seen devastating consequences since the early 2000s when Arab Janjaweed militias were co-opted to suppress an insurgency by non-Arab ethnic groups. The ensuing genocide claimed over 200,000 lives.

The latest developments come as Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the same paramilitary group accused of atrocities in Darfur, have taken control of El Fasher. Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court are collecting evidence of alleged mass killings, rapes, and other crimes committed by RSF fighters. Witnesses report that gunmen went house to house, killing civilians and committing sexual assaults.

The World Health Organization has confirmed that at least 460 people were killed at a hospital in El Fasher, while doctors and nurses were abducted. The situation is dire, with famine detected in El Fasher and Kadugli in South Kordofan, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. Twenty other areas are also at risk of famine.

The conflict has sparked widespread fear across North Kordofan state, with residents reporting a surge in RSF and army presence. Both forces are vying for control of El Obeid, the North Kordofan state capital and an important logistics hub. In a video shared on social media, an RSF member claimed to have taken control of the Bara front.

The situation is reminiscent of past atrocities committed by the RSF, with Sudan's ambassador to Egypt accusing the group of war crimes in El Fasher. Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has urged the Muslim world to end the violence in Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian corridors to be opened.

As the crisis deepens, over 150,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million displaced from their homes. The United Nations has described the situation as one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century. With tensions escalating by the hour, it remains to be seen how this conflict will unfold and what international action can be taken to address the atrocities being committed on the ground.

I don't think the situation in Sudan is that bad. I mean, yeah people are leaving and stuff but 36k is not that many considering the whole country is messed up. And El Fasher was like a strategic city or whatever so losing it isn't the end of the world. The ICRC is just blowing things outta proportion saying it's "horrific" I get they want to sound serious but come on, it's Sudan not some unknown country in Africa πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And btw what's with all these humanitarian corridors? Can't people just handle their own problems for once? πŸ˜’ The UN is always hyping up the worst situations and making a big deal about things that aren't even that serious πŸ™„.

🚨πŸŒͺ️ This is just getting out of hand... another city falls, more lives lost πŸ’€. We're witnessing a perfect storm of human suffering, with people running for their lives from an unending cycle of violence πŸ”«. The world needs to take notice and act fast ⏱️, but I'm not holding my breath πŸ™„. It's like we've seen this movie before in Darfur, and history isn't repeating itself just yet... it's getting rewritten with blood πŸ’”.

🀯 this is just getting worse by the day, we gotta do something about these paramilitary groups taking over cities and committing atrocities like there's no tomorrow. 36k people fleeing in 5 days? That's insane! 🚨 and to think the ICRC says it's repeating itself, like Darfur all over again... that's just devastating. We need more than just words of condemnation from world leaders, we need real action. Turkey calling for a ceasefire is a good start but what about the US or EU doing something concrete? πŸ’‘ this crisis needs to be taken seriously and we can't just sit back and watch it unfold into another genocide πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

🚨 36,825 people fled El Fasher in 5 days? That's like 7,765 people per day 🀯! The ICRC says it's "horrific", but I'm seeing a lot of red flags here ⚠️. RSF's record is sketchy at best, and now they're taking control of El Fasher? 🚫

Here are some stats to put this into perspective:

* 200,000+ people killed in Darfur since 2003
* 14M displaced from their homes ( source: UNHCR )
* 652,000 displaced in Tawila alone
* 460+ people killed at a hospital in El Fasher πŸš‘

I'm seeing a pattern of violence and displacement that's all too familiar. The World Food Security Phase Classification says famine is detected in 21 areas, including El Fasher and Kadugli πŸ—. This is a crisis that requires immediate attention and action.

Here are the numbers on RSF's alleged war crimes:
* 150,000+ people killed ( source: UN )
* 14M displaced ( source: UNHCR )
* Evidence of mass killings, rapes, and other crimes being collected by ICC prosecutors

Time for the international community to step up and take action 🚨. We need humanitarian corridors opened, and an immediate ceasefire to prevent more bloodshed πŸ’”. The fate of Sudan's people is in our hands πŸ‘Š.

I'M SO SICKENED ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SUDAN!!! IT'S LIKE THEY'RE LIVING IN A NIGHTMARE 😱 36,825 PEOPLE FLEEING THEIR HOMES IS JUST MIND-BLOWING! THE FACT THAT THERE ARE ALREADY 652,000 PEOPLE DISPLACED AND NOW THEY HAVE TO ADD ANOTHER 36,825 TO THAT NUMBER 🀯 IT'S JUST TOO MUCH!

AND THE WORST PART IS THAT HISTORY IS REPEATING ITSELF IN DARFUR. I MEAN, WE ALL KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN THOSE ARAB JANJAWEEDEE MILITIAS WERE CO-OPTED TO SUPPRESS AN INSURGENCY BY NON-ARAB ETHNIC GROUPS. IT'S LIKE WE'RE LIVING IN A REPEAT OF THE PAST AND IT'S JUST NOT OKAY πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

I WANT TO SEE MORE INTERNATIONAL ACTION TAKEN TO HELP THESE PEOPLE. WE NEED TO OPEN THOSE HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS AND GET FOOD AND MEDICINE TO WHERE IT'S NEEDED MOST. AND WE NEED TO HOLD PEOPLE IN POWER ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS, ESPECIALLY THE RSF MEMBERS ACCUSED OF WAR CRIMES.

THIS IS A GLOBAL CRY FOR HELP AND WE NEED TO ANSWER IT ASAP!

omg 😱 this is like total chaos in sudan right now 🀯 they're talking about "horrific" humanitarian crisis and i'm not even kidding πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ 36,825 people fled el fasher in just 5 days? that's insane πŸ’₯ and 652,000 displaced people already living in tawila? the numbers are just piling up πŸ“ˆ like what can this world do to stop it? πŸ€”

😱 36,825 people are literally running for their lives from El Fasher in just 5 days? 🀯 That's a ticking time bomb of a humanitarian crisis right there! And what's even more horrific is that history is repeating itself in Darfur. We can't keep ignoring the fact that Rapid Support Forces have been accused of atrocities and now they're in control of the city. The situation is dire, with famine and mass killings on the rise. How many more people need to die before something gets done? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ The UN needs to step up their game and provide those humanitarian corridors ASAP! πŸ’¨

this is getting really scary πŸ€•, 36k people in 5 days? that's insane! #SudanInCrisis #HumanitarianEmergency The fact that witnesses are reporting mass killings and sexual assaults by RSF fighters is just horrific 😱, we can't sit back and watch this unfold. The international community needs to step up and take action, like Turkey is calling for an immediate ceasefire πŸ™, let's hope they listen. 14 million displaced people is a number that's hard to wrap your head around #NeverForgetDarfur
