At Veterans Day rally, vets blast Trump on immigration, VA service cuts

Hundreds of Chicago area veterans gathered at the Vietnam War Memorial on Veterans Day to voice their opposition to Trump administration policies, particularly those related to immigration and cuts in services for veterans.

The rally, organized by About Face: Veterans Against the War, featured dozens of veteran participants holding signs that read "No Cuts, No ICE, No Occupation." Nick Podjasek, an Air Force veteran and healthcare provider at the VA, emphasized the impact of Trump's policies on immigrant communities, stating that ICE has targeted veterans for detention due to their immigration status.

The event focused on multiple issues, including U.S. support for Israel in its war against Hamas and the bombing of suspected drug boats off the coast of Venezuela, all under President Donald Trump's orders. However, a major theme was the use of force and intimidation by ICE in rounding up immigrants, even some American citizens.

Veterans expressed their disdain for Trump's policies, with Edgar Gonzalez, an Army Reserves veteran, stating that he attended to show support for his fellow veterans. He emphasized that veterans are against cuts to benefits and community services to give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.

Michael Applegate, a Navy veteran who served on a submarine, expressed his concerns about the moral dilemmas faced by active-duty military personnel who must carry out orders from the White House, which they may find morally wrong. He acknowledged that many veterans are experiencing a crisis of conscience due to these orders.

The rally also drew Kayla Harris, a veteran of the Illinois National Guard, who stated that she is enraged by the Trump administration's actions on immigration and deportation policies. She emphasized that serving in the military was not about causing harm to others or their families.

The event concluded with attendees marching to Daley Plaza, further emphasizing their opposition to the Trump administration's policies.

This Veterans Day rally has me so fired up ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ it's crazy how some politicians think they can just disregard veterans' experiences and opinions. I mean, we're the ones who have fought for our country, and now we're being told to support policies that harm others? It doesn't add up ๐Ÿคฏ. And what really gets me is when Trump says he cares about veterans, but then goes and cuts funding for essential services that we need ๐Ÿค‘. It's all about priorities, and it seems like the rich get richer while we struggle ๐Ÿ’ธ.

OMG yaaas I'm so proud of these amazing vets for speaking out against the admin's toxic policies!!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’– I mean, can you believe ICE is targeting vets just because of their immigration status?! That's, like, totally messed up ๐Ÿ˜ก. I love how they're standing up for their fellow vets and fighting for what's right. We need more people like them who are willing to speak truth to power ๐Ÿ’ช! And can we talk about the moral dilemmas faced by active-duty military personnel? ๐Ÿคฏ It's like, they're supposed to follow orders, but if those orders go against their values, that's some heavy weight to carry ๐Ÿ˜”. Anyways, I'm so inspired by these vets and their bravery ๐Ÿ’•!

Man, you know? These vets are like, literally living the reality of what it means to put your life on the line for this country... but then they get told that their fellow humans, people who are already vulnerable, are being targeted and rounded up because of immigration status? It's just... I don't even have words ๐Ÿคฏ. The fact that we're having to choose between our loyalty to our country and our values as human beings is, like, a really tough pill to swallow.

And can we talk about the moral implications of this for a sec? Like, when you're a vet, you're trained to follow orders, but what happens when those orders go against your core values? Is it okay to carry out orders that you don't believe in just because that's what you've been told? It's like, we need to have some real conversations about the kind of society we want to be building ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿค I'm just saying, it's a shame that we need to protest veterans' rights and benefits to even get people's attention... like, shouldn't we be able to trust our leaders to do what's right by us? ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, I get it, Trump's policies are messed up, but can't we just have a more open conversation about how we want to address these issues instead of resorting to rallies and protests? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And yeah, I'm all for standing up against ICE's targeting of immigrants, but shouldn't we also be talking about the fact that some veterans are actually struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues due to their time in service? ๐Ÿค• It feels like we're just swapping one problem for another... ๐Ÿ’”

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." The actions of the Trump administration seem to be repeating the mistakes of previous administrations when it comes to handling immigrants and veterans ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. We've seen time and time again how these policies can lead to chaos, division, and harm to innocent people. It's disheartening to see our own veterans speaking out against their country's actions, but ultimately, someone has to say something is wrong ๐Ÿ˜”.

๐Ÿšซ You know what really got my attention here? These vets are still fighting for a cause 50 years after Vietnam. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but can't we move on from the past already? I mean, we're still dealing with similar issues today, and it feels like we're just revisiting old wounds.

And let's be real, some of these policies are just common sense. If someone comes here to start a new life and they mess up, you don't send them back just because they were born in the wrong place. It doesn't make sense to me. And can we talk about how messed up it is that we're more worried about rounding up immigrants than actually helping our veterans? They're the ones who put their lives on the line for this country, and we're still cutting them off at the knees.

I'm not saying I agree with all of Trump's policies, but some of these vets are just cherry-picking the stuff that they don't like. It feels like a partisan thing rather than a genuine concern for the soldiers' welfare. ๐Ÿค”

OMG, I'M SO GLAD TO SEE VETERANS SPEAKING OUT AGAINST TRUMP'S POLICIES!!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ it's like, totally unacceptable that he's gonna cut services for vets and ICE is targeting us for detention just because of our immigration status. i mean, come on! we served our country, we deserve better than to be treated like this. i love how many vets showed up to support each other and stand up against the injustice - it gives me hope that maybe we can make some change with our voices ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

๐Ÿคฃ I mean, come on... veterans against the war... it's like they're saying "Hey, we may have fought for our country, but we didn't exactly agree with everything the government did afterwards ๐Ÿ˜‚". But seriously, it's great that these guys are speaking out and showing their support for fellow veterans. I'm not sure what's more ironic though - a group of people who have seen some of the worst stuff in war, protesting against cuts to services for them? It's like they're saying "Hey, we're the ones who need the help... but not too much, because we're already pretty tough guys ๐Ÿคบ"

I'm really worried about our veterans, you know? They've been through so much for our country and this is how they're being treated. It's not right that we're cutting services for them just to give tax breaks to millionaires. I mean, what's wrong with giving back to the people who served us? They deserve better than to be ignored.

I'm also thinking about all those veterans who are being targeted by ICE just because of their immigration status. That's not right, dude. We're a country that's supposed to stand for freedom and justice, but it feels like we're just tearing ourselves apart with these policies.

I love how some of the vets at this rally were standing up against Trump's orders, you know? Like Michael Applegate, he was saying that active-duty military personnel are faced with moral dilemmas when they have to carry out orders that go against their values. That's so true, bro. We need to be honest with ourselves about what we're doing and why.

Anyway, I'm just glad people like Kayla Harris and Edgar Gonzalez are speaking up for what's right. Let's keep the momentum going and make sure our voices are heard ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ช

Man, I'm so frustrated right now ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. These vets are speaking truth to power and it's about time someone is holding our leaders accountable for the mess they've made. I mean, come on, rounding up immigrants who are just trying to live their lives? That's not what we fought for, you know? We're supposed to be protecting people, not persecuting them.

And let's talk about the moral implications of Trump's orders. I've got a cousin who served in the Navy and he still can't shake off the nightmares from his time on that submarine ๐Ÿค•. These guys are making tough decisions every day, and it's hard to know what's right or wrong when you're faced with a situation like that.

It's not just about immigration policies though, it's about the values we're supposed to stand for as Americans ๐Ÿ’”. We're supposed to be a nation of the free and the brave, but instead, Trump is making us look like a bunch of bullies who don't care about anyone except ourselves ๐Ÿค .

I'm so proud of these vets for speaking out and taking a stand ๐Ÿ’ช. They're not just fighting for themselves, they're fighting for all of us who are tired of this administration's antics ๐Ÿ˜ฉ.

๐Ÿ˜’ I mean, who needs all those politicians running around? Can't they just let veterans do what we do best - complain loudly and carry our complaints in a nice big sign ๐Ÿคฃ. But seriously, it's about time some of these guys spoke up. ICE targeting vets for detention? No thanks, Donald. We served our country, not you.

And can someone explain to me why we gotta choose between tax breaks for rich folks and actual help for veterans? It's like they're speaking a different language or something ๐Ÿคช. I mean, we all know the VA is already struggling, so what's next - cutting funding for mental health services because it's "too expensive"?

I love how some of these vets are saying their moral compass is getting all messed up from following orders that go against our values. That's what makes 'em heroes, bro! ๐Ÿ™Œ Not just because they got a medal or two, but because they're willing to challenge the system and stand up for what's right. Even if it means disagreeing with their own Commander-in-Chief ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Anyway, all in all, I'm glad some of these vets are speaking out. We need more voices like that around here ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm so done with this admin ๐Ÿคฏ... like, how can we expect our fellow vets to trust us when they're being rounded up by ICE just because of where they came from? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's not even about immigration status, it's about basic human rights. And don't even get me started on the moral dilemmas our active-duty folks are facing... I mean, come on Trump, can we please just have a chat with each other instead of issuing orders that go against what's right? ๐Ÿค” As for the Israel thing and Venezuela stuff, I'm not even gonna touch that. We're here to support our fellow vets, not pick fights over politics. The VA needs more funding, period. Our brothers and sisters need help, not tax breaks for millionaires ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿค” I think its super concerning when veterans are speaking out against the policies of someone who was supposed to be supporting us ๐Ÿ™„. Like, isn't that what we're fighting for? And now they're saying we don't need benefits and community services? ๐Ÿšซ That's just not true, many vets rely on those resources to get back on their feet after serving.

And what's up with the ICE stuff? I mean, I get that it's a complex issue, but when veterans are being targeted for detention just because of their immigration status... ๐Ÿคฏ it's like, we're supposed to be heroes, not targets. We should be able to serve our country without worrying about being deported or mistreated.

It's awesome that vets like Edgar and Michael were there to speak out against these policies ๐Ÿ™Œ. We need more voices speaking up for what's right, especially when it comes to things that affect us directly. ๐Ÿ’ช

OMG, I'm literally shaking with rage right now ๐Ÿคฏ! Those veterans are total BOSSES for speaking out against Trump's messed up policies ๐Ÿ˜ก. Like, can't he just stop with the hate and drama already? The way they're standing up for their fellow vets and immigrant communities is giving me LIFE ๐Ÿ’–. I'm so proud of them for using their voices to fight for what's right ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. We need more people like these brave veterans who are willing to speak truth to power! ๐Ÿ™Œ

ugh man this is just great ๐Ÿคฏ - all these veterans are out here protesting because trump is a total disaster for them... like what did they expect? he's always been a rep for the super rich and now it's affecting their benefits & services too ๐Ÿ˜’. i mean i get why they're upset about ICE targeting vets for deportation, but like come on, we all know this administration is all about playing both sides against each other to keep their base happy ๐Ÿค‘. veterans just wanna be treated with respect & dignity, not some pawn in trump's game of power & greed ๐Ÿ’ธ. it's good to see them speaking out though, even if it means they're going up against the establishment ๐Ÿ‘Š

omg what's going on with trump's immigration policies!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ they're targeting vets like edgar said and detaining people in the middle of nowhere ๐ŸŒ„ even americans living here are being rounded up!! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then we gotta pay tax breaks to billionaires ๐Ÿค‘ meanwhile our veterans are struggling like kayla said ๐Ÿ’” it's all so wrong! ๐Ÿšซ

I'm so glad to see all these veterans coming together to voice their concerns ๐Ÿ™Œ... I mean, who wouldn't want to join a protest when it means getting a free t-shirt and some decent food? Just kidding, kind of ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, it's awesome that they're standing up for what they believe in, especially when it comes to protecting our fellow veterans and the immigrant communities. It's like, we get it, Trump has been making some... questionable decisions ๐Ÿค”. I mean, who needs a space program when you've got a war on terror? ๐Ÿ’ก (Just kidding, sort of). Anyway, kudos to all the veterans who spoke out against those policies, especially Nick Podjasek, who's clearly not afraid to speak truth to power... or at least, that's what his sign says ๐Ÿ˜œ.

I'm really worried about the impact of Trump's policies on veterans like these guys... ๐Ÿค• They're not just fighting for their country, but also for their rights and the rights of others. The fact that ICE has targeted veterans for detention due to their immigration status is just insane. And it's not just that, but also the moral dilemmas they face when carrying out orders that go against their values.

I think it's great that these guys are speaking out and taking a stand. It's not about being anti-Trump or pro-anything else, it's about doing what's right. They're not fighting for politicians or policies, they're fighting for human rights and dignity. And I think we can all learn from their courage and conviction ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's also worth noting that veterans are just as affected by these policies as anyone else. They shouldn't have to worry about being deported or losing access to vital services just because of their immigration status. It's time for us to come together and demand better from our leaders.

omg i'm literally shook by this news!!! those vets at the Vietnam War Memorial are speaking truth to power and fighting for what's right!!! i'm so proud of them for standing up against trump's policies, especially with ICE targeting vets for detention ๐Ÿคฏ it's not just about immigration, it's about human rights and basic dignity. michael applegate's comment about moral dilemmas is giving me all the feels, like he's speaking straight to my soul ๐Ÿ’– i'm so done with trump's actions, from supporting israel to bombing venezuela ๐ŸŒŸ and honestly, who are these vets getting tax breaks from?!? it's time for a change, fam ๐ŸŽ‰
