Bay Area tech layoffs top 1,400 in one week with new Amazon cuts in S.F.

Amazon, Meta and Applied Materials are among the tech giants that have laid off over 1,400 Bay Area workers this week, with the latest being Amazon's decision to cut 137 jobs in San Francisco. The layoffs are a result of the shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) and other cutting-edge technologies.

According to Amazon, the job cuts are permanent and will affect approximately 14,000 employees worldwide. In an open letter to its employees on October 28, senior vice president Beth Galetti explained that the company needs to reduce its workforce due to changes in the industry. The layoffs have left many workers uncertain about their futures.

The latest disclosures reveal that Amazon will be cutting 780 jobs across multiple locations in the Bay Area, with San Francisco being one of them. Other affected areas include Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and Santa Clara. The company plans to conduct these layoffs on January 26, but some may take place as early as late February or March.

Other tech companies are also under pressure from AI, including Applied Materials and Meta Platforms. Applied Materials is eliminating 363 Bay Area jobs, while Meta Platforms is reducing its staffing levels by 308 employees. Both companies have described their layoffs as permanent.

The job cuts come as the tech industry grapples with a significant shift towards AI and other emerging technologies. According to Russell Hancock, president of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the industry is trying to stay small and nimble in response to these changes.

"The world is changing quickly," Hancock said. "This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we've seen since the Internet."

As the tech giants navigate this new landscape, many workers are left wondering about their futures and how they can adapt to a rapidly changing industry.

man I'm kinda surprised at all these layoffs hitting our bay area tech scene πŸ€―πŸ’Έ 1,400 jobs gone already? that's crazy talk! it feels like companies are just trying to cut costs and stay ahead in this AI game πŸ’» but what about the people affected? i mean I get it, change is scary, but don't they have any other tricks up their sleeve? πŸ€” or should we just be expecting this shift towards AI as the new normal? 🌐 idk about me, but I'm kinda worried about my own future in tech... 🀞

πŸ€” just saw that Amazon is cutting 137 jobs in San Francisco 😬 like what's going on with all these layoffs? πŸ“‰ first it's AI, then what? πŸ’» tech giants need to rethink their strategies, can't keep laying off people left and right 🀯 we need innovation, not mass unemployment 🚨

🀯 just saw that Amazon is cutting 137 jobs in SF and it's not even a drop in the bucket compared to the 780 jobs they're chopping across the Bay Area πŸ“‰ I mean, I get it, AI is the future and companies gotta stay ahead of the curve... but it's devastating for those people who are losing their jobs πŸ’”. It feels like just yesterday we were hearing about how tech giants were gonna create a million new jobs and now they're basically saying "screw it" to entire communities πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Anyone have any ideas on how these workers are supposed to adapt to this rapidly changing landscape? πŸ€“

ugh I feel bad for all these people losin jobs πŸ€• it's like the whole world is changin so fast and we gotta keep up πŸ’» AI and tech advancements are cool and all, but someone's gotta hold down the fort 😬 Amazon, Meta, and Applied Materials r just tryin to stay ahead of the game, but what about those who ain't in tech? πŸ€” we need more support for people losin their jobs and gettin back on their feet πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I feel like I just got my job at Amazon and suddenly I'm 14,000 employees older... just kidding, sort of πŸ˜‚. But seriously, it's like the tech giants are trying to reboot themselves for the AI era. It's like they're saying "you know what? We've got this automation thing figured out, we don't need you anymore"... meanwhile the rest of us are over here still trying to figure out how to use Alexa πŸ€–. On a more serious note, it's not easy to adapt to change, but I guess that's just part of life in the fast-paced world of tech. Silver linings: maybe we'll all get to enjoy free food and drinks at the new Amazon cafeteria? πŸ”πŸ‘€

man... i feel bad for these people who got laid off lol πŸ€•πŸ’” it's like amazon is trying to be all cool and innovative with ai but in reality, it's just leaving its employees high & dry πŸ’ΈπŸ˜’ i mean, can't they just give 'em some notice or something? 137 jobs cut in sf is a big deal too... like, what even happened there? πŸ€” did the company really need to cut so many people? πŸ“Š anywayz, gotta respect amazon's attempt to stay ahead of the curve πŸš€πŸ’» but at what cost to its employees? 🀝

Ugh, just what we needed - more soulless corporate layoffs πŸ˜’. I mean, it's not like these companies are actually innovating or creating anything of value... just outsourcing jobs to the masses and calling it "efficiency". 14,000 employees worldwide? 🀯 That's some serious downsizing. And don't even get me started on how they're all acting like this is a necessary evil... when really it's just a bunch of people trying to stay relevant in a rapidly changing industry πŸ“ˆ.

Anyway, I guess that's just the life of a tech worker these days - constant uncertainty and no job security πŸ’Έ. But hey, at least they'll have each other... and the faint hope that someone will pick up the pieces when the next big thing comes along πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

Ugh, can you believe these tech giants think they can just lay off people like that? πŸ™„ I mean, 14,000 employees worldwide is a huge number... like, what's the logic here? You're just gonna cut jobs and hope everyone else adjusts, no big deal. Newsflash: it's not that easy! πŸ’” And Amazon specifically saying they need to reduce their workforce due to "changes in the industry" is super vague... if you can't even be honest about why you're cutting jobs, how are we supposed to trust you? πŸ˜’

I don't know... πŸ˜• I mean, it's like, on one hand, these big companies need to cut costs and stay competitive in the AI era, so yeah, maybe the layoffs are necessary. But, on the other hand, 14,000 jobs worldwide is a huge number! It feels like a lot of people are being let go without much warning or support πŸ€”. I'm also kinda worried about the impact on innovation - if everyone's just leaving, who's gonna come up with new ideas and drive progress? πŸš€ But at the same time... I don't know, maybe it's not all bad? Maybe these companies are just streamlining and preparing for a brighter future? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's so confusing! πŸ’

I'm tellin' ya, it's crazy what's happenin' in the tech world right now 🀯. One day you're makin' all that dough, and the next, you're gettin' the ax πŸ’Έ. I mean, I remember when Facebook was just a tiny startup, and then Mark Zuckerberg comes out with this whole 'connecting people' thing... and BAM! Next thing you know, it's Meta Platforms 🀯. And now they're cuttin' jobs left and right? It's like, what's goin' on? πŸ˜•

And don't even get me started on Amazon πŸ“¦. I mean, they're the king of online shopping or somethin', but can't even keep their own employees employed πŸ˜‚. 14,000 people worldwide? That's a lotta folks losin' their jobs 🀝. It's like, what's next? Are we gonna see some giant layoffs in the service industry too? πŸ€”

I feel bad for all these workers who are gettin' left behind πŸ’”. They're just tryin' to make a livin' and pay the bills πŸ’Έ, but it seems like the tech giants are just makin' things harder for 'em πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, what's the point of havin' all that money if you can't even keep your employees employed? πŸ€‘

πŸ’ΈπŸ€– I'm not surprised to see these major companies laying off so many people. It's like they're preparing for a world where humans aren't needed anymore 🚫. AI is taking over, and it's only natural that the tech giants would want to downsize their workforce. But what about all those workers who are left in the dark? Are they just going to be left behind? πŸ€”

I think this is a sign of things to come. The tech industry is shifting towards automation, and it's not just about AI. It's also about data analysis, cybersecurity... everything! And if these companies can't adapt quickly enough, they'll struggle to stay relevant. πŸ’»

It's like we're living in a sci-fi movie, where humans are no longer the center of attention πŸ“Ί. I hope that's not the future we want to create. We need to make sure that these workers have a safety net and support systems in place to help them transition to new roles. Otherwise, we'll lose a generation of talented individuals who could be contributing to so much more than just AI πŸ€–πŸ’‘

I don’t usually comment but... it's wild to see these huge companies just letting go of so many people. 14,000 employees worldwide is crazy! I feel for the ones who got laid off, they must be super uncertain about their next steps. It's like, we get it, tech industry is changing fast and AI is on the rise... but can't we just have a smoother transition? Like, what even is the point of having that many employees if the company's gonna cut them all anyway? I don’t know man, it feels like these companies are trying to avoid responsibility.

I'm low-key worried about these mass layoffs πŸ€•. It's like, one day you're working on a project that's gonna change the world, next thing you know, it's being automated by AI and your job is gone πŸ’». I get that tech companies need to stay ahead of the curve, but it's gotta be done in a way that doesn't leave a trail of devastated workers in its wake 🚫.

I mean, what about all the people who invested their time, skills, and passion into those companies? Don't they deserve some kind of support or severance package? It feels like tech giants are more concerned with saving a buck than with taking care of the people who made them successful πŸ’Έ.

πŸ’” People don't change because the world changes; they change because they do." - Unknown πŸ˜• The tech industry is indeed changing rapidly with AI and other emerging technologies, but it's heartbreaking to see people losing their jobs in the process πŸ€•. It's like the tech giants are trying to streamline things, but what about the human cost? πŸ’Ό

ugh I feel so bad for these people πŸ€•... so many good jobs lost already this year 😞... I'm sure it's not easy to face uncertain futures πŸ’”... companies saying it's all because of AI πŸ€–, but what about the human cost? 🀝... I hope they get some support from gov or orgs 🀞... we need to help people adapt to new tech & industries... πŸ“ˆπŸ’»

AI is gonna change so much stuff, feels like our jobs might not be needed anymore πŸ€–πŸ’»πŸš«. I mean, companies are reducing staff because of it, but at the same time they need people to work on AI and develop new tech πŸ€”. It's all a bit confusing, don't you think? πŸ˜• I just hope those who lost their jobs find new opportunities soon πŸ’Ό.

man I'm so done with all these tech companies laying off people 🀯 it's like they're trying to cut corners or something... I get that AI is the future and all but shouldn't they be investing in their employees instead of just cutting costs? πŸ’Έ I've got a friend who works at Meta and she's been told her role might be impacted, and honestly it's super scary not knowing what's gonna happen next πŸ€”. I'm all for innovation and progress, but can we please make sure the people who are making this tech magic happen aren't just being left in the dust? πŸš‚
