Brother of man who died at Pa. ICE detention center sues U.S. government

Family of Chinese Immigrant Who Died at US Detention Center Files Lawsuit Against Government

A heartbreaking lawsuit has been filed against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security by the brother of Chaofeng Ge, a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant who died under mysterious circumstances at a Central Pennsylvania detention facility.

According to court documents, Ge was found dead in a shower stall at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center on August 5, with a cloth wrapped around his neck and his legs and hands tied behind his back. However, ICE's own report contradicts these findings, suggesting that Ge had been held at the facility for several months before his death.

Yangeng Ge, Chaofeng's brother, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request on September 9 seeking information about his brother's detention and death. He claimed that federal officials unlawfully ignored his request, refusing to inform him whether they would comply within 20 days of receipt.

"This lawsuit calls for much-needed transparency into how the government is treating detainees," said Jeremy Ravinsky, associate attorney at Beldock Levine & Hoffman, which represents Ge's family. "The government is so committed to keeping the public in the dark about what is happening at these detention centers that it is willing to violate the law."

Ge's family alleges that he was held in isolation at the facility because no one spoke Mandarin and the staff made no effort to communicate with him. This lack of communication, combined with Ge's reported treatment by personnel and the circumstances of his death, raises serious questions about the conditions at the detention center.

The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and demands that all records pertaining to Ge's detention and death be released. Yangeng Ge himself stated, "I am devastated by the loss of my brother and by the knowledge that he was suffering so greatly in that detention center... He did not deserve to be treated that way. I want justice for my brother, answers as to how this could have happened, and accountability for those responsible for his death."

The case highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the treatment of detainees at ICE facilities. As one attorney noted, "Standing up and demanding transparency will encourage others to do the same... The more we can shed light on what happens at these detention centers, the better."

๐Ÿค” I'm not buying that the gov't is clueless about how they treat detainees. Have they really never noticed anyone asking questions? This FOIA request by Yangeng Ge seems legit, and if the gov't is violating the law like Jeremy Ravinsky says, why didn't they just come clean with the family? All we know is that Chaofeng died under suspicious circumstances and his family wants answers. ๐Ÿ“ I need to see the ICE report and all those records they're withholding before I can believe this lawsuit isn't about cover-up.

awww this is so heartbreaking ๐Ÿค• my thoughts are with Chaofeng's family ๐Ÿ˜” its just not right that they had to go through this unimaginable pain and no one was doing anything to help him ๐Ÿ’” the fact that his brother had to file a lawsuit to get info about his bros detention and death is just crazy ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ im so glad there are lawyers like Jeremy Ravinsky fighting for justice ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ we need more of these people who care about humans being treated right, not locked up in isolation or dying under weird circumstances ๐Ÿคฏ

I'm so sorry this happened to Chaofeng Ge's family ๐Ÿค•. It's just not right that he died under mysterious circumstances in a detention center without anyone knowing the truth about his treatment or what went wrong. I mean, the government has some explaining to do here... but on the other hand, I don't want to jump to conclusions or assume they're entirely at fault either ๐Ÿค”.

I can understand why the Ge family is upset and wants answers - their brother was basically left in the dark about his own detention and death. But we also need to be careful not to just throw everything at ICE without considering all the facts. It's a complex issue, for sure... but I do think it's crucial that we get more transparency and accountability in these situations.

I've been following this case and it's definitely raised some serious concerns about how detainees are treated in these facilities. The fact that Ge was held in isolation because no one spoke Mandarin is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. I hope the court can bring some justice to his family, but at the same time, let's not forget that there are a lot of good people working within ICE who care deeply about doing what's right...

๐Ÿ˜” Another death at an ICE facility ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿฅ. This time it's a Chinese immigrant who died under mysterious circumstances in a shower stall ๐Ÿšฝ. I mean, what kind of environment are they trying to create here? A person is left tied up with cloth around their neck and legs and hands behind their back... it's just not right ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

And the worst part is that there are people out there who think this can happen without anyone speaking up or demanding answers ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. The family of the deceased is fighting for transparency, but I wonder how many other cases like this are going unreported or uncovered ๐Ÿ”.

It's sad to see that we're still living in a world where humans are treated like objects rather than people ๐Ÿšซ. The conditions at these detention centers need to be investigated and improved ASAP โฐ. We owe it to the families of those who have suffered and to our collective humanity ๐Ÿ’”.

just when i think things cant get any worse ๐Ÿค•, a chinese immigrant dies in us detention center and his family has to file a lawsuit just to find out what happened. how's that for transparency? the fact that they're seeking records and answers is already a huge step, but it's still sad that it had to come to this ๐Ÿค”

i think we need to keep pushing for better conditions at these detention centers and more accountability from our government officials ๐Ÿ’ช

I mean, think about it ๐Ÿค” - if you're gonna keep people in a detention center for months without even speaking their language, that's already pretty sketchy, right? And then to say that they didn't try to communicate with him? Like, come on. That's not exactly transparency, that's just ignoring the problem.

I know some ppl might be all like "oh, it's not our problem" but newsflash: if you're holding someone in a facility without even trying to communicate with them, that's already a huge red flag. And then for the family to file a lawsuit and demand answers? That's just basic human decency.

And don't even get me started on the whole "we're only doing this because we want transparency" thing ๐Ÿ™„. Like, yeah sure, that sounds great until you actually have to do it. But I guess if standing up for what's right means getting called out as a troublemaker, then so be it ๐Ÿ˜. At least the Ge family is speaking truth to power and demanding justice for their loved one.

It's really sad when people lose their lives under mysterious circumstances like this ๐Ÿค•. I think it's a big issue that the government is keeping so much info about detention centers under wraps. If they're not willing to release records about Chaofeng Ge's case, how can we trust that he received proper care? It's weird that his own brother had to file a FOIA request just to get some answers... ICE and DHS need to be more transparent about what's going on in these facilities.

I'm also concerned that people who are detained might not have access to basic necessities like language support or communication with their families. Isolation can be super traumatic, and I think the government should make sure detainees are getting the care they need ๐Ÿค. This lawsuit is a good start, but we need more to hold these facilities accountable for treating people fairly.

It's time for us to know what's really happening behind those detention center walls...

๐Ÿค• This is so sad... the US gov't needs to be held accountable for how they treat detainees ๐Ÿšซ. It's unacceptable that a family has to sue just to get info about their loved one who died in a detention center ๐Ÿ“. The fact that the staff didn't communicate with Ge in his native language Mandarin speaks volumes about the treatment he received ๐Ÿ‘Ž. The gov't needs to do better, prioritize transparency and accountability for these facilities ๐Ÿ’ก.

man this is a super sad story ๐Ÿค• chaofeng ge's death is still so mysterious idk how he ended up like that in the shower stall with a cloth around his neck and tied hands/legs... it's crazy to think about how his family didn't even know what was going on while he was being held at the detention center - 20 days and they just ignored their freedom of info act request? that's insane ๐Ÿ™„

anyway, i think this lawsuit is a good thing because now we might get some answers as to what really happened to chaofeng ge... his family deserves justice and transparency about what went down at the detention center. maybe it'll make people think twice before taking their immigration issues to these facilities ๐Ÿ˜•

This is so sad ๐Ÿค•. I mean, you'd think that if someone's life is slipping away, there'll be some sort of investigation or at least a proper explanation from the authorities. But instead, it seems like they're just sweeping everything under the rug. And to make matters worse, this family had to file a lawsuit to get even basic information about their loved one's treatment and death... It's just not right ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I've seen some crazy stuff in my years, but this takes the cake. You'd think that with all the resources we have, we can at least treat people with dignity and respect. I mean, what's the point of having a justice system if it's just gonna let things slide? It's time for those responsible to be held accountable ๐Ÿ’ช.

omg this is so sad ๐Ÿค• my heart goes out to yangeng ge and his family, it's just not right that chaofeng died under mysterious circumstances. i'm definitely team transparency here - the gov't should be held accountable for how they treat detainees. it's crazy that staff didn't speak mandarin and made no effort to communicate with him... ๐Ÿคฏ doesn't that sound like neglect? anyway, i hope yangeng ge gets some answers and justice for his bro ๐Ÿ˜ข

OMG, this is just so sad ๐Ÿ˜ญ! Like, how could they keep my brother in isolation without even trying to communicate with him? That's just cruel ๐Ÿค•. And now his fam is fighting for justice and transparency... it's like, super necessary ๐Ÿ’ฏ. We need more people like Yangeng Ge who aren't afraid to speak up about what's going on in these detention centers ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. I mean, can you even imagine being in that situation? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's just horrific. The fam is demanding answers and accountability... let's hope they get some ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿค” I'm not buying all this transparency talk. It's just a PR stunt to silence people like Yangeng Ge, who's really fighting for justice here. What if his brother was actually being tortured or mistreated, and they don't want anyone to know? The government can always spin things to cover their tracks.

And what about all the other detainees who die under mysterious circumstances? We never hear about those cases. It's like they're just ignored by the system. I'm not convinced that this lawsuit will make a difference. Maybe it'll just create more paperwork and obfuscate the real issues.

We need to be careful here, folks. The government might try to use this as an opportunity to crack down on dissent and silence critics even further. We can't let that happen. We need to keep pushing for transparency and accountability, no matter what. ๐Ÿšซ
