Budget 2025: how inflation and the two-child benefit cap have increased poverty

A desperate mother from Kent's Herne Bay is among many struggling families facing extreme hardship due to rising inflation and the government's two-child benefit cap, forcing them to turn to food banks for help.

The family of four – all under 13 – lives in a rented flat where Rachel Reeves' budget plans promise relief. The single mother has been forced to make difficult choices, such as using £1 frozen food, snacks being an extremely rare treat, and having to carefully manage the family's electric and gas bills.

The charity that provides their aid is in crisis mode, distributing over 1,100 food parcels a month – double its original number. Canterbury Food Bank has become one of the top five charities nationwide in terms of demand for help, due in part to rising costs. Stuart Jaenicke, head of finance at the charity, says every pound spent buys around ten percent less food than it did just over a year ago.

The family's situation is not unique; many families are struggling with poverty as benefits and wages fail to keep pace with increasing living expenses. Experts believe that poverty is becoming more concentrated in areas like Kent where cheap labor and insecurity make jobs difficult to find.

I'm literally so done with how people are struggling rn 🤯 my mom had to go through something similar when I was younger, we barely had enough for food, let alone electricity lol she had to make these crazy sacrifices too, like using instant noodles all the time and I'm pretty sure our fridge was just a bunch of old leftovers 🍲👀 I feel so bad for this family in Herne Bay though, it's just heartbreaking that they have to rely on food banks, it's like, what even is wrong with us as a society?!? shouldn't we be doing more to help each other out?!?

I'm so worried about all these families struggling to put food on the table 🤕. I mean, £1 frozen food? That's like something out of a bad drama movie! I can only imagine how hard it must be for Rachel Reeves and her kids to have to make choices like that every day. It's just not right that they have to rely on charity just to survive.

I live in London, but I've got friends who are from Kent and they're telling me the same thing - jobs are super scarce and the cost of living is through the roof 🚨. And with the two-child benefit cap, it's like the government is basically taking food out of their mouths. It's just not fair.

I'm all for Rachel Reeves' budget plans, but we need more than just some tweaks to help families like this one. We need real solutions that address the root cause of poverty and inequality 🤝. Can't we do better?

I feel so sorry for this mum and her kids, it's just heartbreaking that she has to resort to food banks because the govt is not doing enough to help. £1 frozen food? That's just not right! 🤯 And what about the kids? No snacks or treats for them? It's like they're already living in a war zone. I get that the charity is doing its best but it's just not enough.

And you know what really worries me? This isn't an isolated case, there are so many families out there struggling just like this one. The 2-child benefit cap is just ridiculous, it's not fair to punish mums and dads for having more than two kids. And don't even get me started on the poverty trap... it's like they're locking people into a cycle of poverty. 😩 We need better support systems in place, stat! 🚨

I'm really worried about people like this family, I mean they're not asking for much just some basic things to survive 🤕. The government's two-child benefit cap is like a no-go zone for many single mums trying to make ends meet. It's just not fair that they have to rely on food banks just because the system can't keep up with inflation. I mean £1 frozen food is just crazy talk! 😱 Canterbury Food Bank is doing its best but it's clear something needs to change, like a universal basic income or something? We need to think outside the box here and make sure everyone has access to basic necessities 🤝.

🤕 I'm seeing this fam strugglein' so much it's heartbreaking 😔. They gotta use £1 frozen food 'cause it's the only affordable option 🍴. Can you even imagine?! And those electric & gas bills? That's like, a whole lot of stress 💸. It's not just them, tho - poverty's on the rise everywhere, especially in areas like Kent where jobs are scarce and wages don't match up ⚠️.

I drew a quick pic to try & illustrate this:
```
+---------------+
| Poverty |
| Rings True |
| Everywhere |
+---------------+
|
| Kent
v
+---------------+ +---------------+
| Jobs | | Wages |
| hard to find | | don't keep pace|
+---------------+ +---------------+
```
We need to do somethin' about this, fam 🤝. Can we raise some awareness? Maybe help those in need a bit more? 💖

omg u guys can't even imagine how hard it is for a single mom to survive rn 🤯 my heart goes out to this fam from herne bay, they're literally living off £1 frozen food it's just not right, i'm so fed up with the gov t trying to make things worse with that 2-child benefit cap. can't they see how it's affecting ppl like rachel and her kids? 🤷‍♀️

anyway, i'm not surprised to hear that food banks are in crisis mode - it's like they're supposed to be a last resort or something, but sometimes it feels like we gotta rely on them just to get by. 10% less food for every pound spent is literally heartbreaking, can't the gov do better than this? 🙄

i've been reading about how poverty is becoming more concentrated in areas like kent and i'm just shook - it's like the gov is leaving these people behind. cheap labor and insecurity make jobs super hard to find, so of course ppl are struggling, but still... u know what they say, 'it takes a village' but sometimes it feels like we're all just standing around watching our neighbors struggle 🤕

I'm literally shocked by this 😱. I was only 10 years old when my parents had to move us from a bigger flat because we couldn't afford the rent. Now, hearing about families having to use £1 frozen food is just heartbreaking 🍔💸. It's like, what happened to our society? We're supposed to be one of the richest countries in the world, but it feels like people are struggling to get by.

I think we need to rethink our whole system, you know? Like, if they're really gonna cap the number of kids we can have, shouldn't they also give us more money or something? 🤔 It's not fair that families have to choose between heating their homes and eating. I mean, I've seen memes about people who still manage to afford avocado toast while others are struggling to put food on the table... it's just so wrong 😡.

I'm no expert, but it feels like we need more support for these families. Maybe some kind of universal basic income or something? 🤑 I know it sounds radical, but at least then they'd have a safety net. Food banks are great and all, but it's not the same as having a steady income. We should be doing better than this 💕.

I'm literally shocked by this news 🤯, a family of four having to rely on food banks because the government's budget plans aren't helping them ASAP 💸. I mean, using £1 frozen food is not something you want to hear about, it's just heartbreaking 😔. And Canterbury Food Bank being one of the top five charities in demand for help? It's crazy 🚨, they're distributing double their original amount and still struggling to get enough resources. The poverty rate in areas like Kent is getting out of control and it's not just about the families who are struggling, it's also about the kids growing up in poverty with no support system 🤕. We need to do something about this ASAP!

omg u can feel the desperation from this fam 🤯 1£ frozen food snack is basically a myth at this point idk how much more rachael reeves' budget plans can do before its just another bandaid on a bullet wound 🚑 news like this makes me wanna cry my heart out what's wrong with our society that families are having to resort to food banks in the first place?! 🤷‍♀️ it's not just about the fam in herne bay, its about all those families struggling to make ends meet in areas like kent where jobs r scarce and pay is low 📉 poverty is literally becoming a norm and its heartbreaking that we're living in times where 1% less food for every £ spent from charity is considered a 'success' 😔

Ugh, this is insane! I mean, £1 frozen food? That's just crazy. What's the point of even having a budget plan if it doesn't help people on the actual ground? And Canterbury Food Bank getting flooded with demands like that... it's heartbreaking. It's not like they're just giving out free food or anything. They have to be so careful with their budget now, 10% less food for every pound spent? That's basically cutting costs on everything and putting more pressure on the charity.

It makes me wonder, what's going on with our government's 'relief plans' if they're not actually helping people? I mean, Rachel Reeves' budget plans promise relief, but all I see is struggling families. It feels like we're just patching up the symptoms instead of fixing the problem. And it's not just this family... it's happening everywhere. Poverty is becoming so concentrated in areas like Kent because jobs are scarce and wages are too low to keep pace with rising living expenses.

I'm all for people wanting more kids, but what about supporting families who already have them? It feels like we're abandoning the ones who need help most. 🤕🍔

omg, its so sad 2 c ppl struggling 2 pay 4 basic necessities 🤕. i think the gov r not doin enuf 2 help these familes. the £1 frozen food is low-key a joke lol. i no peeps r strugglin 2 afford electric & gas bills, thats scary. poverty is gettin outta control in areas like kent. its time 4 the gov 2 step up & do sumthin more than just offer budget plans 🤔.

I mean, think about it... when we're trying to make ends meet, how much food can we really afford? It's crazy to see a family having to rely on food banks just because the system isn't keeping up with inflation 🤯. And it's not just about the food – it's about being able to heat our homes and take care of our families without breaking down 😔.

I feel for Rachel and her family, but also I think this highlights a bigger issue: we need to find ways to support each other more. Instead of relying on charity, what if we could have more job opportunities in areas like Kent? Maybe if the benefits were better, people wouldn't be forced to choose between heating their homes or putting food on the table 🌟.

We gotta think about the systems that put us in this situation and how we can work together to change it 💪.

Ugh, can't even imagine having to rely on food banks with my own kids 🤯. It's like the system is just failing these families so hard. I mean, £1 frozen food? That's not just a choice, that's basically going hungry if you can't afford more. And it's not just the food, it's the whole way of life, you know? Can't even have snacks without breaking the bank 🍿.

I think we need to talk about the impact of this two-child benefit cap, it's like they're punishing families for having too many kids 🤷‍♀️. And the fact that Canterbury Food Bank is getting so much demand, it's just heartbreaking. I mean, these charities are doing their best, but they can only do so much 💪.

We need to think about this differently, we need to find ways to support families and make sure everyone has access to basic necessities 🌟. It's not too much to ask for a little bit of financial security, you know? I mean, what would it take to put an end to all this struggling? Some common sense and compassion 💕

I'm so worried about these families, especially the single mom, Rachel Reeves... 🤕 she's struggling to put food on the table for her kids, and it's heartbreaking. I remember when I was a kid, my family had to be super careful with every penny, but at least we had some basics like milk, bread, and veggies. Nowadays, it seems like everything is so expensive! I mean, £1 frozen food? That's just sad. And the charity scene is getting flooded with people in need... 10% less food for every pound they spend? It's just not right. Poverty is a growing issue, and it's affecting families like this one who are already doing their best. We need to do something to support these families, like Rachel Reeves' budget plans promise... 💕

OMG, this is just heartbreaking 🤕... I mean, £1 frozen food? That's crazy! 😲 My fave celeb, Rachel Reeves, seems like a lifesaver for this fam right now. Can't believe the gov't is making people turn to food banks in the first place tho. And the charity is doing its best, but it's still so unfair 🤷‍♀️... I wish we could just magic up some extra cash and help these ppl out. Did you know that Rachel Reeves has a plan to help with housing costs too? That's like, super cool 👍. We need more ppl in power who actually care about the little guys, you feel? 🤗

I feel so bad for this single mum, gotta make such hard choices just to feed her kids 💔😩. It's crazy how £1 frozen food is considered a treat now 🤯. And it's not just the UK that's struggling, poverty's on the rise everywhere worldwide 🌎. We need more support for families like hers, like Rachel Reeves' budget plans promised, but let's be real, it's gonna take more than just a few tweaks to address this massive problem 💸.

🤕 It's so sad to hear about this fam 🤝 they're literally having to scrape by on £1 frozen food... it's just heartbreaking thinking about what other families might be going through too 💔

can't imagine how hard life must be for them right now 🤕. I mean, £1 frozen food is just insane, I've had days when I was broke but at least I could still afford a decent meal. Food banks are like the last resort, it's heartbreaking to see families having to rely on them. And yeah, benefits and wages not keeping up with living expenses is a huge issue, it's like the system is failing these people. Kent's got some of the highest poverty rates in the country, it's like they're getting left behind 🚫. We need to do more to support these families, I'm all for Rachel Reeves' budget plans but it's not just about throwing money at the problem, we need systemic change too 💸.
