Camp leader who drugged and sexually abused boys jailed for more than 23 years

Christian Camp Leader Sentenced to 23 Years and 10 Months for Drugging and Sexually Abusing Boys

A retired vet and church youth volunteer has been jailed for 23 years and 10 months after being found guilty of drugging and sexually abusing young boys. Jon Ruben, 76, lured the children to a summer camp where he would administer tranquilizing sweets before carrying out his abuse.

Ruben used his position as a respected member of his community to gain access to vulnerable children. He targeted boys at Stathern Lodge summer camp, where he ran under his own leadership, and administered sedatives through "sweet games" designed to make the children fall asleep. This allowed him to undress them and choose who to abuse.

The court heard that Ruben used the dark web to buy what he thought was a sedative but ultimately gave one of the victims Xanax instead, while also taking Viagra to enhance his own abilities. His wife, Susan, described her husband as "sadistic" and said she had been "completely betrayed" by him.

Ruben's actions were carried out under the guise of Christianity, using his position in the church council at St Peter's in Ruddington to gain trust with vulnerable children. The bishop of Southwell and Nottingham has condemned Ruben's actions as "horrific" and stated that they are especially shocking given the supposed safe environment of a church setting.

The victims' families have expressed outrage and disgust at Ruben's behavior, saying he had posed as a trustworthy figure who had betrayed their trust. They have called for justice to be served and are seeking support from organizations and agencies to help them cope with the trauma inflicted upon them by Ruben.

Ruben will also face an additional period of license, bringing his total sentence to 31 years and eight months. The investigation is ongoing, and Leicestershire police are continuing to look into Ruben's involvement with children across more than two decades.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ This is just disgusting ๐Ÿ˜ท... how could someone in a position of trust do this to innocent kids? ๐Ÿคฏ He preys on their trust, uses his "christian" role to get close to them and then drags them down into hell... ๐Ÿ˜ญ 23 years is still too long for him to be free, my heart goes out to the victims and their families ๐Ÿ™, they deserve justice and support ๐Ÿ’ช. This should be a wake-up call for all of us to always look out for each other's kids and report any suspicious behavior ๐Ÿšจ.

๐Ÿ˜ž this is just heartbreaking I feel so sorry for those poor boys who were taken advantage of by someone who was supposed to be a trusted figure in their lives... 23 years is way too long for one person to have to deal with the trauma they went through, and it's even more devastating that it happened at a place where people should've felt safe ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿ˜” I just read about this terrible case where a Christian camp leader got caught for drugging and abusing young boys. It's like he thought his position in the church made him above the law, and that he could just use his "good guy" image to get close to kids. That's so sickening. The fact that he targeted vulnerable children who trusted him because of their faith is just heartbreaking. I can only imagine how much pain and trauma those boys went through. It's a reminder that even the people we trust the most can be hiding dark secrets. The sentence is way too lenient if you ask me, but I'm glad justice will finally be served. ๐Ÿ’”

OMG lol can u even believe what happened to those poor kids!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿค• I mean I know some ppl might say that church leaders r supposed 2 b all about love n care but this dude Jon Ruben is literally the WORST ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ he's like the ultimate predator n he managed 2 get away w/ it 4 so long bc of his position n his stupid church friends . But now justice is finally being served & those kids will finally b able 2 heal n move on from this trauma ๐Ÿ’•. I just wish we cud do more 2 prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future ๐Ÿค” like better background checks n stuff n maybe some ppl wld think twice before trusting someone w/ a church position bc of their behavior ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm soooo conflicted about this dude Jon Ruben... Like, on one hand, 23 yrs & 10 mo is like, a LOT of time ๐Ÿคฏ, and I'm all for holding people accountable for their actions. But at the same time, I feel like he's getting kind of harshly punished? Like, yeah, what he did was super wrong & evil ๐Ÿ˜ก, but can't we also consider the fact that he was basically using his church position to get close to these kids? It's just so messed up... And then again, I'm all about victims' rights too, and if anyone gets to suffer for a long time because of what they did... like, it's not even ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค• I just can't believe what I'm reading about this guy Jon Ruben... 23 years and 10 months is way too long for someone who committed such heinous crimes against innocent kids ๐Ÿ™. How could a Christian leader, of all people, do something so sickening? It's like, you're supposed to be a role model, not a predator! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ And using the dark web to buy drugs... that's just plain disgusting ๐Ÿ˜ท. The fact that he thought he was above the law and used his position in the church to lure those kids in is just mind-boggling ๐Ÿคฏ. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families, it's a tragedy what they had to go through ๐Ÿ™. We need to make sure these kind of monsters get locked up good and tight ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ This makes me so angry! How could someone use their position in the community like that?! It's not just about what he did to those boys, it's also about how he used his church council role to gain trust with them. That's so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ. And 23 years and 10 months isn't even enough for him! I think the sentence should be much harsher considering the harm he caused. The fact that he was able to hide behind a mask of Christianity makes it even more disgusting ๐Ÿ™„. The families need support, like actual help, not just sympathy from organizations...

๐Ÿค• This case is a heart-wrenching reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked power and exploitation. Jon Ruben's actions were facilitated by his position in the church council, which allowed him to gain the trust of vulnerable children. The fact that he used Christianity as a guise to carry out his abuse is particularly disturbing, highlighting the need for greater scrutiny of those in positions of authority. ๐Ÿ˜” The use of the dark web to obtain sedatives further underscores the depths to which individuals can sink when driven by their darker impulses.

It's also striking how Ruben was able to manipulate children into falling asleep, only to take advantage of them when they were most vulnerable. This level of cunning and calculation is chilling. ๐Ÿคฏ The long sentence he's received is a welcome step towards justice, but it's essential that we continue to support the victims' families in their efforts to cope with this trauma.

The investigation into Ruben's activities across multiple decades raises serious questions about how such abuse could have gone undetected for so long. It highlights the need for greater accountability and oversight within institutions, particularly those that claim to serve and protect vulnerable populations. ๐Ÿ“š

I mean this guy is really going down, right? I heard he was a respected member of the community, like a superhero or something ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ... just kidding! 23 years and 10 months isn't too bad for what he did though. I guess you could say he's getting a little "tranquilized" by his own actions ๐Ÿ˜‚. But seriously, it's disgusting that someone in a position of trust like that would use it to abuse kids. He should've stuck to leading the church bingo night, not summer camp ๐ŸŽ‰. The bishop is right, though, this is horrific and especially messed up since he was supposed to be protecting those kids, not hurting them. Anyway, I hope the victims get the justice they deserve and some much-needed support to deal with what happened. And let's all just make sure to keep an eye on our summer camps, we don't want any more "sweet games" going on ๐ŸŽ‚!

man this is just so sad the guy was like a trusted figure in the community and he took advantage of that trust in such a horrific way ๐Ÿค• his actions were not only morally wrong but also had a huge impact on those young boys who are still dealing with trauma from what happened ๐Ÿ˜” it's hard to even imagine how they must be feeling still 23 years is way too long for someone like him to be in prison i hope the victims and their families get the support they need during this difficult time โค๏ธ

๐Ÿค• this whole thing is just sickening... how can someone who's supposed to be leading a summer camp for kids turn out to be a monster like that? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ i mean, the fact that he used his position in the church and as a volunteer to get close to these kids is just twisted. and the way he used the dark web to buy what he thought was a sedative... it's just unbelievable that someone could be so reckless with their own life. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 23 years and 10 months might seem like a long time, but i'm sure the victims will need a lot more than that to heal from this trauma. ๐Ÿค—

omg this is soooo wrong ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿ˜ฑ Jon Ruben is literally a monster! how did he get away with this for so long? i mean, using the dark web to buy sedatives and drugging kids is just crazy ๐Ÿ˜ณ and to think he was using his church position to gain trust... that's just disgusting ๐Ÿšฎ. the victims' families are totally justified in seeking justice and support - they need help dealing with this trauma ๐Ÿ’”. 23 years is still way too long for a person who committed such horrific crimes, imo ๐Ÿ˜ก. anyway, glad he's finally facing justice - maybe it'll encourage others to come forward ๐Ÿคž

Ugh, this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•... I mean, how can someone who claims to be a leader of faith do such heinous things? It's like something straight out of a twisted episode of 'The Handmaid's Tale' โฐ. The thought of these boys being lured into a supposed safe space with the intention of abuse is just devastating ๐Ÿ’”. I'm so sorry for the victims and their families, they must be going through hell right now ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. The fact that he used his position to gain trust and manipulate children is just horrific ๐Ÿšซ. The bishop's condemnation is spot on too, it's unacceptable for someone in a position of power to take advantage of that power ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿค• the sheer scale of this abuse is just mind-boggling... a man who uses his position in the church & as a youth volunteer to groom vulnerable kids, then drags them to a summer camp where he commits these atrocities... it's like something out of a nightmare. and what's even more disturbing is that he used his supposed leadership role to make the kids trust him enough to take advantage of them in such a way... the fact that he thought he could hide behind his Christianity & get away with this kind of abuse is just sickening. 23 years seems like a minimum sentence, but i think it's only fair to acknowledge that the trauma those boys went through will have lasting effects on their lives, and they'll need support for years to come...

This case is absolutely shocking ๐Ÿ˜ฑ, I mean what kind of person can do this? He was like a guardian figure or something, but turns out he was just using it to exploit kids for his own twisted desires ๐Ÿคข. It's even worse that he used church and community events to gain trust with the kids. I feel so sorry for the victims who were completely misled by him. 23 years is still way too long, in my opinion ๐Ÿ˜”. The fact that he thought he could hide behind being a respected member of his community makes it all the more horrific ๐Ÿšซ. It's good that there are people like the bishop condemning this behavior and supporting the victims' families. We need to do better in protecting our kids from predators like Ruben ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Can't believe some people still think that being a "respected member of the community" or holding a position in church means you're above accountability. I mean, what's next? Being a camp leader doesn't make you a superhero who can do no wrong? ๐Ÿ™„ This dude was like a predator in sheep's clothing, and it's disgusting that he thought he could get away with this for so long.

And seriously, how does someone like this even get into leadership positions in the first place? Is it just a case of "follow the money" or did people actually see something red flags that they chose to ignore? ๐Ÿค‘

Anyway, I'm glad that justice is being served and these poor kids are finally getting some closure. But what really gets me is that this guy thought he could buy his way out of trouble on the dark web ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Newsflash, dude: you can't pay to be innocent! ๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿค” I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... 23 yrs & 10 moths for drugging kids & abusing them? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ I need to see the full trial transcript or at least a list of witnesses & evidence to believe that the sentence is fair. The fact that he used his church position to gain trust with vulnerable children makes it even more disturbing... ๐Ÿ˜ฑ and what's with the "sweet games" excuse? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ How can anyone justify this kind of behavior? ๐Ÿ™„

I mean come on... 23 years and 10 months? That's way too lenient if you ask me ๐Ÿค”. I know the old guy was 76 and had dementia, but that's no excuse for what he did. He preyed on those kids like a predator, using his position to get away with it. And yeah, sure, he's got a history of abuse now, but shouldn't we be doing better by these poor kids? I'm all for rehabilitation, but not when the sentence is more focused on "treatment" than actual justice. His church and community were supposed to be looking out for him, not enabling his sick behavior ๐Ÿšซ.

๐Ÿ˜ž this is so heartbreaking... a 76 year old man using his position as a respected member of the community to groom and abuse kids for over 20 yrs... it's just shocking that someone in such a role could do something so heinous... the fact that he used Christianity to gain trust with vulnerable children makes it even more devastating... ๐Ÿค• i can only imagine how many lives were affected by his actions... the victims' families deserve justice and support, and i'm glad to see the community coming together to help them cope... it's also a reminder of the importance of vigilantism when it comes to protecting our most vulnerable members... we need to keep an eye on each other's children! ๐Ÿค
