US Catholic Leaders Slam Trump's Aggressive Foreign Policy in Scathing Letter
Three US Catholic leaders have condemned President Donald Trump's increasingly aggressive foreign policy, warning that it undermines the country's moral role in promoting peace and human rights around the world. In a statement titled "Charting a Moral Vision of American Foreign Policy," Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago, Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington D.C., and Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, call on the US government to adopt a more just and sustainable approach to foreign policy.
The cardinals express concern that Trump's policies, including his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and his withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, have eroded America's moral authority on the world stage. They argue that these actions are counterproductive to promoting peace and human dignity, and instead contribute to polarization and destructive policies.
"We wanted to make sure that we talked about the important principles," said Cardinal Cupich in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. "We hope that Chicago-area Catholics will reflect on the concerns expressed in our statement."
The letter also criticizes Trump's military action in Venezuela and his administration's stance on Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. The cardinals call for a more diplomatic approach, emphasizing the need to respect human rights, promote economic assistance, and prioritize peace over military intervention.
"We renounce war as an instrument for narrow national interests," they write. "We seek a foreign policy that respects and advances the right to human life, religious liberty, and the enhancement of human dignity throughout the world."
The statement echoes concerns expressed by clergy around the world, according to Cardinal Cupich. The cardinals hope that their message will resonate with Americans and inspire them to demand more from their government on issues of foreign policy.
"It's a wonderful coincidence" that the letter was released on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day dedicated to honoring his legacy of promoting human dignity and social justice, said Cardinal Cupich.
The White House has not commented on the cardinals' statement.
