Democrats must not cave in to Trump | Bernie Sanders

Democrats Must Stand Firm Against Trump's Authoritarianism

The US Senate faces a crucial test in its stand against President Donald Trump's authoritarian tendencies during the ongoing government shutdown. As 60 votes are required to fund the federal government, Democrats must remain resolute and united in their opposition to the president's attacks on the working class.

Trump is waging war on vulnerable populations, including those relying on the Affordable Care Act for healthcare, with devastating consequences. His administration's actions threaten the lives of millions, particularly among children, who could face 50,000 unnecessary deaths each year due to his drastic plans to dismantle the healthcare system.

Furthermore, Trump's administration is withholding funding for essential programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, despite a $5 billion emergency fund established by Congress. This decision would push millions of people into hunger, exacerbating childhood poverty in the US.

Despite Republican claims that they are refusing to negotiate with Democrats, it's clear that their actions are driven by a desire to appease Trump and his billionaire allies. The fact that the House speaker has given his chamber a six-week paid vacation during this critical period raises questions about the priorities of Republicans in power.

Make no mistake, Trump is a schoolyard bully who uses intimidation and coercion to get what he wants. His contempt for the constitutional role of Congress and the courts is palpable, as evidenced by his numerous lawsuits against major media outlets and his attempts to extort funds from law firms.

Caving in to Trump's demands would embolden him further, allowing him to accelerate his movement toward authoritarianism. Democrats must stand firm against his agenda, which includes decimating programs that protect the elderly, sick, and poor while giving more tax breaks to the 1%.

The choice is clear: if Democrats surrender to Trump's demands, they will be betraying the trust of millions who have fought for democracy and their constitution. The consequences would be catastrophic, not just for the working class but also for the very fabric of American society.

As Democrats in Congress face intense pressure from constituents, they must remain steadfast in their opposition to Trump's authoritarianism. Republicans are also being called out by their own constituents, with 15 Republican Senators standing up against Trump and supporting funding for SNAP benefits.

The stakes have never been higher. The decisions made by the Senate today will determine the course of American history for generations to come. Democrats must stand firm in their opposition to Trump's agenda, protecting the healthcare needs of working families and upholding the rule of law.

the gov shutdown is getting out of hand 🤯🚫 trump's behavior is becoming increasingly concerning - using his power to manipulate ppl & undermine institutions 👀💥 his attacks on healthcare & food stamps are literally killing people 😩 millions are counting on democrats to stand up for them 🙏 the repubs need to stop playing both sides & put country over personal gain 💸👊

man this guy trump is like a real life supervillain 🦸‍♂️ he's literally trying to take away people's healthcare and food stamps just because he can't get his way 😡 60 votes in the senate and they still have to deal with him being all authoritarian it's crazy 15 republican senators standing up against him is a good start but like what about the rest of them? 🤔

🤕 This shutdown is just getting worse. 50,000 unnecessary deaths a year due to Trump's plans on ACA... can't even imagine 🙁. And it's not just that, Republicans are taking food stamps away from people who need 'em. Like, what's the point of having a strong economy if we're gonna leave our own citizens hungry? 🤯 The fact that they're giving their speaker a six-week paid vacation while this crisis unfolds is just wild... priorities, man! 😩

Trump is literally trying to TAKE AWAY PEOPLE'S LIVES WITH HIS GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN 🤯!!! He's got a death wish for millions of Americans who rely on affordable healthcare and food stamps! 🤢 I mean, what's next? Are we gonna let him take away our homes too?! 😱 The fact that some republicans are just standing by while this is happening is making me wanna lose it! 💥 They need to wake up and realize that Trump is NOT the leader of America anymore - he's a bunch of bullies trying to silence the people 🗣️

ugh, senate is gonna cave in 4 sure lol 🤦‍♂️ trump's all about manipulating ppl & using his power 2 get what he wants... republicans r just as bad 2, they dont wanna rock the boat & take a stand against their own party 4 the greater good. its like they got a collective brain fart 4 life 🙄 food stamps r gonna be cut off 4 millions ppl & trump's all about decimating programs 4 the elderly & poor... meanwhile, he gets all this cash from his billionaire buddies 🤑 & trumps all about intimidation & coercion lol, what a schoolyard bully 👊

🤔 I mean, can we really say that Democrats are being strong if they're just standing firm against Trump's authoritarianism? Isn't it kinda like saying, "We're not gonna compromise with him, but also we're not actually doing anything to stop what he's doing"? Like, what's the plan here? Are they just gonna sit around and watch millions of people suffer while they wait for something to happen? 🚫

And don't even get me started on the Republicans. They're all like, "Oh no, we're against Trump too!" But then why are they not doing anything about it? It's like they're just pretending to be concerned for everyone else so they can save face in front of their billionaire buddies. 🤑

I know some people will say that Democrats need to stand firm because if they give in to Trump, he'll become even more powerful and a dictator will take over. But I'm not convinced. Can't we just try to have a conversation with him instead of making everything so binary? Like, can't we find a way to compromise and make things better for everyone without pitting one group against another? 🤷‍♀️
