Detroit’s enormous American flag vanishes day after its big reveal - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Massive American Flag Quickly Unfurled, Then Quickly Vanished

In a symbolic gesture to honor the city's rich history and its military personnel, a massive 141-by-85-foot American flag was unveiled in downtown Detroit just one day after being installed. However, the grand gesture was short-lived as the wind proved too much for the giant banner.

Bedrock, the company behind the redevelopment of the Hudson’s site, removed the flag on Thursday due to the strong winds, which were reportedly at a moderate 10-20 mph. According to a company spokeswoman, the decision was made out of concern for safety and potential damage to the flag.

Although the flag's brief stay in Detroit may seem disappointing, there is no need to worry that it will never be seen again. The massive banner will make its return when the wind dies down, marking a welcome respite from the gusts.

Detroit has long been associated with this symbol of patriotism and tradition, dating back to 1923 when the original J.L. Hudson's building first unfurled what was then the largest American flag in the world. The giant banner became an annual fixture for Armistice Day (now known as Veterans Day), serving as a celebration of the city's military heritage.

This latest iteration is not only large but also believed to be the largest hanging U.S. flag in the country, measuring 141 feet long and 85 feet wide. Once reinstalled, it will proudly overlook Woodward Avenue, marking an iconic symbol for Detroiters to cherish.

The story highlights how this massive American flag serves as a reminder of Detroit's rich history, its commitment to patriotism, and the enduring impact that such gestures have on the community.

ugh dont even get me started on them winds 🤯♂️... i mean, i love a good DIY project, but sometimes you gotta know when to fold 'em ⚔️... anywayz, i think its super cool that detroit is gettin all patriotic and whatnot 💪... i've been thinkin of makin my own little american flag outta an old t-shirt and some twine 🎨... maybe ill post a vid on instagram of me doin it 📹... anyone got any tips on how to make it extra special? 🤔

I find it rather intriguing that the giant American flag was taken down by strong winds just one day after being unveiled 🌬️💨. I think this raises an interesting question about the relationship between artifice and nature - how can we balance our desire for spectacle with the unpredictability of the environment? On a more positive note, it's heartening to see Detroit reclaiming its role as a symbol of patriotism and tradition 👏. The fact that the flag will make its return when the winds subside is a testament to resilience and adaptability 💪.

I was like "wait what" when I saw pics of that huge American flag just pop up yesterday 🤯. I mean, 141x85 feet? That's massive! I'm not surprised it came down though, those winds in Detroit can be crazy ☁️. I think it's a shame it didn't stay up longer but I guess safety first is a good thing 😊. Still, can't wait to see it back up when the weather calms down. It's awesome that Detroit gets to keep its giant flag as a symbol of patriotism and history 💪.

🤔 Windy days in Detroit, I guess the flag was meant to be seen, but also respected 🌬️💨. Safety first, right? Can't blame 'em for taking it down. Hopefully, when the winds die down, we'll get a longer glimpse of that giant banner 🏴 USA. Detroit's history is so cool, and I love how they're keeping that spirit alive 💕👍

Ugh, I was so hyped to see that massive flag go up but it only lasted like an hour lol 🤦‍♂️. I guess the winds in Detroit can be pretty fierce, huh? Anyway, I'm just glad they're planning to put it back up when the weather improves. It's really cool to think about how that giant flag has been a part of Detroit's history for so long... like, whoa 🎉. And can we talk about how epic it is going to look when it's finally back up? 💥

omg u guys I'm so bummed that the detroit american flag came down like, what was it even up there for? 🤦‍♂️ i mean i get it about safety and all but can't we just have a flag in peace? lol anyway i heard they're gonna put it back up when the wind dies down which is good news 🌬️ hopefully by then i'll be able to take some decent pics with it too

I gotta feel bad for the flag lol 🤦‍♂️. I mean it was only up for like 24 hours, which is literally nothing 😂. But at the same time, safety first, right? Can't have a giant flag just flying around in the wind, that's just asking for trouble ⛈️.

But seriously, Detroit needs more gestures like this to show its pride and patriotism 🇺🇸. The fact that it's the largest U.S. flag out there is pretty cool, I guess 🤔. And Woodward Avenue will be a whole lot prettier with it hanging around 😊.

I'm just curious, what's the deal with the Hudson's building? Is that some old history I should know about? 🤓

Omg I cant even believe the windy conditions in Detroit were too much for that huge American flag 😂! Did you see those stats? 10-20 mph winds is moderate, right? But seriously, I think its awesome that Bedrock is already planning to reinstall it when the wind dies down 💪. And btw, have you seen the size of that flag? 🤯 141x85 feet?! thats massive! 🎉

that was weird... 1 day in & it's gone 🤷‍♂️ I mean, i get it, safety first, but still... 141x85 ft is a big deal! what's next? gonna be some giant inflatable unicorn or something? 😂 just kidding. gotta love the spirit, though. that city's got heart. and who knows, maybe this'll be the spark somethin' new & awesome comes outta. anyway, they shoulda seen it comin', wind's been whippin' through that town like crazy lately... gusts were 10-20 mph?! no wonder it didn't stick around 🤯

lol what a waste of time & resources 🙄 i mean, who thought it was a good idea to put up a huge flag in the middle of a windy city anyway? it's just gonna get destroyed anyway 😂 and yeah, i'm not buying that it'll come back when the wind dies down... they're probably just waiting for the next bad weather day so they can say "see we told you it was safe" 🙃

I mean come on... what's up with these giant flags? They're just gonna blow away in the wind like they did in Detroit lol 😂🌬️ I get it, safety first and all that but can't they just anchor it or something? And yeah, Detroit is a city of history and pride, but do we really need such a massive flag to prove it? Like, I'm all for patriotism and whatnot, but sometimes less is more, right? 🤷‍♂️ Still, I guess it's cool that they're gonna put it back up when the winds die down. That'll be a nice change of scenery for Woodward Avenue 😉

🚨💔 oh man, another massive American flag gets destroyed by some freaky wind... i mean, what even is going on with these giant flags? one minute they're all proud and majestic, next minute they're just flapping around like a dying bird 🦅😩. and the city's gotta worry about it being damaged? 🤷‍♂️ meanwhile, the people of Detroit are probably over here thinking 'yeah no big deal, we've seen this before' 🙄. anyway, guess we'll have to wait for the wind to die down before the flag makes its next appearance... which is just going to be a tease at this point 😒

it's kinda funny how our perceptions of grand gestures can shift so quickly... one day we're hyped about something big & bold, but the next it's just a soggy mess 🤦‍♂️... still, i think there's beauty in the impermanence – reminds us that even the most epic symbols are subject to the whims of nature. what does that say about our expectations as a society? do we crave permanence or are we okay with things being temporary & fleeting?

Ugh, what's with these giant flags anyway? They just end up getting destroyed by some wind like it's nothing 🤦‍♂️. I mean, can't they just make something a little more durable or somethin'? Like, don't get me wrong, it's cool that Detroit's gonna have this big flag again, but do we really need the drama? 😒 And yeah, 10-20 mph winds is pretty moderate, so like what exactly were they worried about? The flag just got a little too showy for its own good... 🙄

OMG 🤯 I'm so bummed that the huge American flag was taken down so quickly 😔! I mean, I get it, safety first, but can't we just hold onto it for a sec? 😂 It's not like it's gonna fly away by itself 🐦. I guess I'll have to wait till the wind dies down and they put it back up 👍. Detroiters are really lucky to have this massive banner as a symbol of their city's history 💕. It's so cool that it's believed to be the largest hanging US flag in the country 🤯. Bring on the patriotic vibes, I'm ready! 😊

I felt so sorry for that huge flag 🌏😢 it was just up there for like an hour before it got blown down by the wind 😂💨 I mean, can you imagine the wind chill on that thing? It's crazy how strong those winds must have been in Detroit this time of year. Anyway, I think it's awesome that they're going to put it back up when the weather clears up 🌞👍 The city already looks so cool with that giant flag waving over Woodward Avenue 😎. But what I'd love to see is a video of the whole thing getting blown down - it would be like something out of a movie! 💥

I'm so bummed that the giant flag only stayed up for like, one day 🤦‍♀️! I mean, can't we just enjoy it for a bit before the wind blows it away? 😂 But seriously, 141x85 feet is HUGE, and I love how it's bringing some patriotism to the city. I'm definitely rooting for them to get it back up when the winds die down 🌪️💨

omg what a bummer! 🤕 i was literally stoked to see that giant american flag in detroit for like 5 sec tho lol it did seem pretty intense to just fly away though idk how they planned for that but idc its still super cool that detroit is getting a new one when the winds die down 💨🇺🇸
