Disney Unveils First Look at Live-Action 'Moana' Reimagining with Catherine Laga'aia as the Protagonist.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the first trailer for its highly anticipated live-action reimagining of the beloved classic, "Moana". The new adaptation promises to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic film, with Australian actress Catherine Laga'aia taking on the title role.

The trailer offers an exciting glimpse into the adventure, showcasing Laga'aia's impressive singing skills as she belts out the song "I Am Moana" in what appears to be a stunning rendition. Joining her in the live-action film is Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson, reprising his iconic role as demigod Maui.

The cast also features Australian actor John Tui as Chief Tui, Moana's no-nonsense father, and Frankie Adams as Sina, Moana's playful and strong-willed mother. Rena Owen rounds out the main cast as Gramma Tala, bringing her own brand of warmth and wisdom to the role.

Directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, the Disney film is a production of Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated movies "Moana" and "Moana 2", also lends her voice to the live-action adaptation.

Fans can currently stream the animated versions of "Moana" and "Moana 2" on Disney+, with the live-action film set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
 
looks like they're gonna try again with a new lead 😐 Catherine Laga'aia as Moana? we'll see how that plays out. still love Dwayne Johnson in the Maui role though! 👍 cast looks pretty solid, think John Tui will bring some good energy to Chief Tui 💪. but has anyone seen Auli'i Cravalho's voice acting skills? 🤔 gonna miss her Moana vibe from the animados 🎵. hope this live-action one lives up to expectations 🤞

Catherine Laga'aia is going to bring such a cool vibe to the role, and Dwayne Johnson is back as Maui, lol! 😂 The trailer looks amazing, can't wait to see it in theaters. Lin-Manuel Miranda is involved too? Genius move, Disney 🎵! And Auli'i Cravalho's voice will be awesome in this live-action adaptation, I love her so much 💖. omg i'm lowkey hyped for this live action moana remake 🤩 - catherine laga'aia as moana is a great choice imo, she's got that island vibe down pat and her singing skills are insane! can't wait to see dwain johnson back as maui too 😎 the cast looks super talented but auli'i cravalho's return is a nice touch to keep the animated magic alive 🌊
 
just saw the trailer for this new live action moana movie 🌊👏 I gotta say, Catherine Laga'aia looks so legit as moana! i mean, she's got that island vibe down pat 😎 and her singing skills are on point 🎤. but what i'm really excited about is seeing the different take on the story... will it stay true to the original or bring in some new elements? 🤔 also love that they're keeping some of the same voice actors from the animated movies 🙏, especially auli'i cravalho as gramma tala 👵. can't wait for this one! 🎥👍
 
man dis is gonna be lit 🤩! i love how they're shaking things up with Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, she's got some serious skills singing and acting wise 🎤👏 it's great to see more Aussie talent getting involved in the film too 💪. Dwayne Johnson is always a win 😎 and i'm hyped to see how they're gonna bring this story to life on the big screen 🌊. July 2026 can't come soon enough! 🕰️ gotta keep an eye out for the casting announcements, fingers crossed we get some more awesome talent on board 👍
 
just saw that new trailer for moana's live action remake 🌊🎥 can't wait to see catherine laga'aia bring moana to life 🤩 and i'm so here for dwayne johnson reprising his role as maui 😂🏆 but why did they need to recast auli'i cravalho though? she was perfect as the original moana 👀
 
I'm intrigued by this reimagining of Moana 🤔. While I appreciate the nod to the original, I do wonder if they're taking a risk in casting Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, considering the strong cultural associations with the Pacific Islander character in the animated version 💕. Still, I'm excited to see how this new adaptation will subvert or reinforce those expectations 🌊. With Dwayne Johnson back on board, it'll be interesting to see how he brings his signature charm to Maui – a role that could easily feel like a caricature without careful handling 😊. Can't wait to dive in and form my own opinions about this one! 👍

I'm so excited for this new take on Moana! 🤩 I've got a daughter who's obsessed with the original animated movie, but I think it's great that they're bringing in a new actress to play Moana - Catherine Laga'aia is amazing and I love her in other Aussie shows. I'm curious to see how they'll re-imagine the story for live-action though... my little one will be totally sold if Dwayne Johnson is still Maui 😂! The cast looks like it's going to be epic, can't wait to watch this with my family and sing along to "I Am Moana" together 🎶!
 
🤔 I'm not sure about this one... Casting Catherine Laga'aia as Moana feels like a bold move. She's talented, no doubt, but is she the right fit for this role? The trailer does showcase her singing skills, which is awesome! 🎵 But I'm concerned that a live-action remake might change the essence of the original film too much. What do you guys think about bringing back an old favorite in a new way? Should we be excited or cautious about this reimagining?
