Elon Musk says 'unauthorised' Russian use of satellite-based Starlink internet stopped

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Russia's unauthorized use of his company's satellite-based Starlink internet system has been largely halted. This development comes as Kyiv's defense chief revealed efforts are underway to prevent Moscow from using the service in the future.

The Ukrainian military relies heavily on Starlink for critical communications and drone operations, which have been crucial in their battles against Russian forces. Despite this, Kyiv officials recently discovered that Russia had managed to deploy Starlink-equipped drones, used them in attacks, highlighting a significant vulnerability.

In response to this issue, SpaceX took swift action by adjusting the functionality of its internet system to block unauthorized access. This move seems to have curtailed Russia's use of Starlink, according to Musk. As a result, Kyiv is now working on strengthening its defenses against potential future attempts by Moscow to utilize the service.

The Ukrainian military's reliance on satellite-based technology has been instrumental in their combat efforts, with tens of thousands of Starlink internet connections providing vital communication and piloting capabilities for drones.

OMG 🀯 I'm so relieved to hear that Russia's using Starlink without permission is being curtailed πŸ™Œ SpaceX is literally the hero we need right now πŸ’ͺ Elon Musk is like a superhero, saving the world one satellite at a time πŸš€ And can you even imagine if they hadn't taken action? The Ukraine military would be in so much trouble πŸ€• Those drones are super powerful and this just goes to show that tech can be both amazing and scary 😬 Kudos to SpaceX for taking matters into their own hands πŸ’―

man this whole starlink thing is wild 🀯 i mean elon musk must be all over it like a bad rash lol what's crazy is that russia actually got caught using the system without permission and now they're basically blocked out πŸ˜‚ kyiv needs to step up their game though, can't have them relying on the same tech for defense as they do for streaming netflix πŸ“Ί gotta prioritize those drone ops and comms or else moscow'll just find another way in πŸ’₯

just heard that Russia's been using starlink without permission πŸš«πŸ’» is wild how this was discovered tho Ukraine must've had some pretty sharp people on the lookout for any suspicious activity πŸ€“ anyway guess that's a huge bummer for them, all those connections they worked so hard to set up are just gonna be locked down now πŸ˜”

πŸ€” I'm surprised Elon Musk stepped up like that πŸ™. It shows he values his tech more than Russia's aggression πŸ˜’. But it's crazy how Ukraine managed to get their hands on this system in the first place 🀯...and then Russia just went and used drones with them?! 😱 That's not cool at all. I guess we'll see how Kyiv strengthens its defenses now πŸš§πŸ’»

πŸš€πŸ’» omg can you believe what elon musk did!!! he literally blocked russia from using starlink πŸš«πŸ’” that's like a huge deal especially since ukraine was counting on it to stay connected during this war πŸ“±πŸ’Έ the fact that they could deploy starlink-equipped drones and use them in attacks is super scary 😱 but thanks to musk's move, ukraine can finally focus on other things than dodging russian cyber attacks πŸ™πŸ”’ now we just hope kyiv can strengthen its defenses so this doesn't happen again πŸ”©πŸ’ͺ

just hope this doesn't get resolved too quickly lol, feel like russians are just gonna find another way to hack into it, what's the point of even disabling the service? shouldn't be that hard to crack a code... πŸ€”πŸš€

Come on, this isn't a big deal! Russia can't just hack into SpaceX's system whenever they want πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, I know Ukraine is in a tough spot, but using someone else's tech without permission? That's not cool, bro πŸ‘Ž. And what's with the drones? Can't Kyiv come up with their own stuff instead of relying on Starlink? Just saying... πŸ€”

But for real, it's good that SpaceX stepped in and blocked those unauthorized access attempts πŸ’». I guess it's a win-win for Ukraine now that they can protect their comms and drone ops. However, this is just a temporary fix – Kyiv needs to get its own tech up and running ASAP if they wanna stay ahead of Russia πŸš€. And what about the whole security thing? How do we know SpaceX isn't gonna get hacked again in the future? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I'm not buying that Russia was completely stopped from using Starlink overnight... sounds too convenient πŸ™ƒ. Don't get me wrong, it's good that SpaceX took action to secure their system, but this whole thing feels like a band-aid solution. What about all the satellites they already deployed? How are those gonna be taken down or disabled? And what about the cybersecurity risks involved in adjusting functionality like that? πŸ€• I'm no expert, but it just seems like we're dodging the real issue here... πŸ’‘

πŸš€ just dropped a stat that's wild 🀯 Ukraine's defense chief said 90% of Russia's attempts to use Starlink were blocked by SpaceX! πŸš«πŸ’» Meanwhile, Kyiv is now talking about implementing a 'kill switch' to cut off access if Moscow tries to get back in πŸ”’πŸ”₯ and it's estimated that 10+ times more Ukrainian Starlink connections are needed just to keep up with the Russian aggression πŸ“ˆπŸš€ did you know that for every 1,000 drones used by Ukraine, 200-300 of them were equipped with Starlink? 🀯

I'm glad SpaceX took action on this πŸ™Œ - those Russian hackers were getting too comfy, exploiting a system meant to connect people not just governments 🚫! It's crazy how dependent Ukraine is on Starlink now, I mean, tens of thousands of connections are no joke πŸ’». But at the same time, it's like they're playing with fire here, relying so heavily on this tech for their operations πŸ”₯. Still, I guess that's progress? The fact that SpaceX stepped up to help, even if it was kinda by accident πŸ€”, shows how powerful these satellite systems can be. Hope Ukraine gets those defenses strengthened ASAP πŸ’ͺ!
