Fabergé egg made for mother of Russia's last tsar sells for £23m

Sotheby's auction house has broken records once again with the sale of a breathtaking Fabergé egg at a staggering £22.9 million. The exquisite piece, known as the Winter egg, was created in 1913 by renowned Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé for his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, the mother of Russia's last emperor.

This stunning work is considered one of Fabergé's most lavish creations, showcasing the artist's exceptional skill and attention to detail. The egg features a frost design on the inside and rose-cut diamond-set platinum snowflake motifs on the outside, set against a backdrop of rock crystal. The level of craftsmanship and beauty in this piece is truly unmatched.

The Winter egg has been sold at auction three times before, but its latest sale has shattered the previous record by over 2,500%, with the Rothschild egg selling for £8.9 million back in 2007. This historic sale not only sets a new world record for Fabergé but also solidifies the egg's place as one of the most significant and valuable pieces in the artist's repertoire.

The egg's history is as fascinating as its creation. After the Russian Revolution, it was taken from St Petersburg to Moscow, where it became part of the Kremlin armorry collection alongside other royal treasures. In the 1920s, the Soviet government began selling off art treasures, and the egg changed hands several times before being sold to a British collector for £1,500 in 1934.

The egg's ownership has been marked by periods of uncertainty, with its whereabouts unknown for over two decades between 1975 and 1994. However, it was eventually rediscovered and sold at auction twice more in the early 2000s, first for £6.8 million and then for £7.1 million.

According to Margo Oganesian, head of Christie's department for Fabergé and Russian works of art, the sale is a testament to the enduring significance of this masterpiece. "This was an exceptional and historic opportunity for collectors to acquire a work of unparalleled importance," she said. With only a handful of imperial Easter eggs remaining in private hands, the Winter egg's sale is a rare chance for collectors to own a piece of history that is both technically and artistically brilliant.

I'm totally wrong about Fabergé eggs being overrated 😒. I mean, £22.9 million? That's just a lot of money for something that's basically a fancy egg 🥚. Can't people just appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship without throwing around such astronomical prices? And what's with all the fuss about owning a piece of history? Can't you just enjoy it in a museum or something? I'm also not buying into the whole "masterpiece" hype – it's just an egg, folks! 🤷‍♂️

OMG, £22.9 million?? 🤑💎 That's like, crazy rich! I remember hearing about Fabergé eggs being super valuable back in 2007 when the Rothschild egg sold for like, £8.9 million... who knew it'd go even higher? 😲 And can you believe this thing has been around since 1913? The craftsmanship is insane, I mean, rose-cut diamond-set platinum snowflake motifs? 💎 That's some next-level stuff right there! 🤯

The Winter Fabergé egg's £22.9 million price tag is truly eye-watering 💸🔥. I mean, 2,500% increase from the previous record set by the Rothschild egg in 2007 is just staggering 🤯. It's a testament to the enduring value and allure of Fabergé's exquisite craftsmanship 🎨. The fact that it was sold at auction for so long with its whereabouts unknown for two decades adds to its mystique and historical significance 🔮. For collectors, this sale is like a dream come true – a rare chance to own a piece of history that's both technically and artistically brilliant 💥. It just goes to show that when it comes to Fabergé eggs, the money's always on display 💸👀.

OMG 🤯 I'm beyond stoked about this record-breaking sale!!! £22.9 million is CRAZY 💸! I mean, think about it, this Fabergé egg has been on quite the wild ride - from being part of the Kremlin armory collection to changing hands multiple times and even having its whereabouts unknown for 20 years 🤔! But to see it end up in the hands of a collector who appreciates its value is just AMAZING 😊. And can you believe this sale shattered the previous record by over 2,500%?! That's some serious egg-cellence 💎👏! The craftsmanship and beauty in this piece are truly unmatched... I mean, it's like a work of art that's been perfected over centuries 🌟.

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around how much money one egg can sell for! £22.9 million is insane 💸 Like, what even goes into that kind of cash? Do the Fabergé people get to keep some of it or do they just send it all back to Russia 🇷🇺?

I'm curious about Peter Carl Fabergé's life too - was he a master craftsman from birth or did he learn his skills as an apprentice somewhere? And what inspired him to create those egg-shaped things for the royal family? Were they like, Easter baskets or something?! 🥚

It's wild that this egg changed hands so many times, especially during the Soviet era. I wonder if anyone knew where it was during those missing 20 years 🤫. Did people even care about art treasures back then?

🤣 I mean, £22.9 million for an egg? That's like buying a plot of land in rural Russia... just kidding, sorta 😂. But seriously, who needs that kind of cash when you could buy, like, a private island or something? 🌴 At least the egg gets to rest easy knowing it's part of the most expensive Fabergé sale ever 🙏. The history behind this thing is wild too – from being part of the Kremlin armory to getting sold for £1,500 in 1934... talk about a wild ride 🚂. I guess you could say it's been an egg-cellent investment strategy 😜.

OMG 💎 I'm seriously impressed by this record-breaking sale! £22.9 million is insane 😲 For something that's over 100 years old, it just goes to show how valuable art can be. The craftsmanship on this egg is insane 🔥 I mean, who makes a platinum snowflake motif? 🤯 It's like Fabergé was a genius or something. And the history of this thing is crazy too - from being part of the Kremlin armory to being sold for £1,500 in 1934! That's like a wild rollercoaster ride. I'm glad it ended up back in private hands, though - I don't think anyone could handle owning something that valuable 😂

Just read about the record-breaking Fabergé egg sale 🤯. I mean, £22.9 million is crazy! It just goes to show how valuable art can be when it's created by someone as talented as Peter Carl Fabergé. I'm not exactly sure what to make of all this, but I guess it just highlights the beauty and craftsmanship that went into making these eggs. I wonder who'll end up owning it now... 🤑

lol u can never put a price on art lol 💸🎨 i mean its not like the Rothschild egg was just chillin in some vault collecting dust before this fam made 8 mil off it 🤑 its crazy to think about how much history that thing has gotta be worth more than that to someone who actually cares about it 😂

omg u guys! 🤯 the winter faberge egg sold 4 £22.9m!! thats insane lolol its like wow how did they even make somethin so beautifull & historic? i mean, it was made in 1913 for empress maria feodorovna & her mom, dowager empress, and now its worth over 25 milly!!! that's like, crazy! i'm not surprised tho cuz this egg is like, one of faberge's most famous & expensive creations. its got rock crystal, diamond snowflakes & frost design... mmmm im dyin to see it in person!! 🤫

🤑 I'm not surprised it sold for £22.9 million, I mean, come on! It's like a work of art or something 😂. The level of detail in this egg is insane, I've seen some pretty intricate stuff in my time, but this takes the cake (or should I say, the Fabergé egg 🎨). I'm just glad it finally found its way to a collector who can appreciate its beauty and history. It's crazy how much its value has increased over the years, 2,500% is wild! 💸

omg, 22.9 mil 💸 is insane!! it broke the record by over 2k% 🤯 and i'm dying to know more about its history 😂 did u know it was sold 3 times before but kept getting back in circulation like a hot potato 🔄? also, 1.5k in 1934 lol what a steal 🤑 anyone else think the Rothschild egg is just jealous of the win 🤷‍♂️ btw, have u seen the stats on Fabergé's most valuable eggs? top 3 are:

* Winter egg (£22.9 mil)
* Rothschild egg (£8.9 mil)
* Hen Egg (£7.1 mil)

also, fun fact: did u know that only a handful of imperial Easter eggs remain in private hands 🤫 and this one is like the holy grail for collectors 💎

I mean, £22.9 million? That's just insane! Like, I get it, it's Fabergé, but come on... 🤑 It's an egg 🥚, not a house 🏠. And who needs that kind of money to hang out a few decorative motifs on a rock crystal background? I'm sure the previous owner was just sitting there thinking, "You know what would be awesome? A £22.9 million Easter egg!" 😂

🤯 I mean, can you even believe it? £22.9 million for one Fabergé egg?! It's like they say, when it comes to art, the more obscure, the more valuable... or in this case, the more exclusive. The Winter egg is truly a masterpiece, and I'm not surprised it sold for such an astronomical price. I mean, you've got rose-cut diamond-set platinum snowflakes, rock crystal, and a frost design on the inside – it's like nothing you've ever seen before! And to think it was created in 1913 by one of Russia's most renowned jewelers... it's just mind-boggling. 🤓

£22.9m is wild 🤯 i mean, you can buy a decent house for that price in london these days. but i guess when it comes to art, it's all about the value and the history behind it. fabergé eggs are like nothing else out there, so i suppose £22.9m is justified 💸
