Family of woman beaten to death at Bronx public hospital plans to sue NYC

"Deadly Care: Family of Beaten Woman to Sue NYC for $20 Million"

The family of a 55-year-old woman who was beaten to death by her roommate at a Bronx public hospital is planning to take the city to court, alleging gross negligence and inadequate care. Cynthia Vann's death, which left her in critical condition for over two weeks, has sparked outrage among her loved ones.

According to officials, Vann had been undergoing liver treatment at Lincoln Hospital when she was attacked by her roommate, Racquel Haughton, 44, in September. The attack resulted in severe head trauma, and Vann died shortly after. While Haughton was arrested and charged with manslaughter and assault in October, the family claims that hospital staff failed to protect Vann from the violence and were not forthcoming about the reasons behind her deteriorating condition.

"We intend to litigate this matter and will use every tool at our disposal to uncover the truth about what occurred and the failures that led to Cynthia's tragic death," said John Elefterakis, the family's attorney. "Somebody needs to answer for this."

The family is expected to announce Thursday that they are filing a notice of claim against the city and its hospital agency as the first step in mounting a lawsuit. They allege that staff withheld information about Vann's condition, failed to keep her safe, and were negligent in their duties.

"We would just tell me about her condition medically, but they didn't tell me what was the reason for the head trauma," Tanesha Vann, Cynthia's daughter, previously told Gothamist. "When I found out she was in emergency surgery, I was shocked."

The family is struggling to cope with Vann's death and the questions surrounding it. Rev. Kevin McCall, a spokesperson for Vann's loved ones, described the emotional toll of losing their matriarch: "Tanesha went from speaking to her mother every day to not speaking to her – to attempting to dial a number and knowing that her mother's not there."

As the case unfolds, New York City Health and Hospitals has yet to respond to comments on Vann's death. Haughton is being held at Rikers Island jails and is due back in court Thursday.

The $20 million lawsuit will likely focus on allegations of negligence, inadequate staffing, and a failure to provide adequate care. The case raises questions about the accountability of public hospitals and the measures in place to protect patients from harm.

With Vann's family seeking justice, many are left wondering how such a tragedy could have occurred at a hospital that was supposed to provide safe care.

I think the city should pay way more than $20 million for this! I mean, 55 is still pretty young and her whole life is being taken away from her family like that? It's not fair that they're only getting $20 mil when you consider how traumatic this must've been for them. Plus, what kind of hospital lets something like this happen on their watch? Lincoln Hospital should be held accountable for their negligence and I think the city owes it to Vann's family to pay way more than that! πŸ’ΈπŸš‘

πŸ€•πŸ˜’ this is just heartbreaking... 55 yrs old woman beaten to death by her own roommate in a public hospital... it's like something straight out of a horror movie πŸŽƒοΈ. I feel so bad for the family, especially Tanesha and her other loved ones who are still trying to process everything 😭. The fact that hospital staff allegedly withheld info about Cynthia's condition and failed to keep her safe is just devastating πŸ’”. $20 million lawsuit might not bring back Cynthia, but it could help ensure that this never happens again 🀞. NYC needs to take a hard look at its hospitals' policies and procedures to prevent such tragedies in the future πŸ”.

This is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. I mean, can you imagine walking into your mom's hospital room and finding out she was beaten by her roommate? It's like a nightmare come true 😱. And the fact that hospital staff didn't even have the decency to tell you what happened or why she was in emergency surgery? Unbelievable 🀯. The city is gonna get slammed with a $20 million lawsuit, and rightfully so πŸ’Έ. This kind of negligence can't be ignored. I just hope they're able to find out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again at any hospital πŸ˜”.

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Can't believe another one of these cases where it's clear hospitals are more interested in covering their own behinds than actually taking care of patients... I mean, $20 million is a decent start, but I'm sure the Vann family will be able to get a much bigger settlement πŸ€‘. It's just so frustrating when you think about all the times hospitals have been able to "find" problems with staff only after someone has gotten hurt or worse... like in this case, where they were allegedly withholding info from the family πŸ˜’.

πŸ€• $20 million is kinda low for what this woman went thru... I mean her daughter had to deal with her mom bein in comatose 4 weeks straight 😩 and she's still strugglin to cope w/ the loss 🌹. The fact that hospital staff didn't keep her safe or tell her mom what was goin on is just horrific πŸ‘Ž. Hospitals r supposed to provide a safe space for patients, not put 'em in harm's way πŸ’”. I hope the Vann family gets some justice and closure w/ this lawsuit 🀞

πŸ€• this is just so sad πŸ˜”. $20 million lawsuit is a lot of money but it won't bring back her 🌹. my heart goes out to the family, especially her daughter Tanesha πŸ’”. how can something like this happen at a hospital that's supposed to take care of people? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ shouldnt there be more checks and balances in place to prevent such tragedies from happening again? 🚨 i wish there was more information about what happened inside the hospital, so we can learn from it and make sure something like this never happens again πŸ‘Ž

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 🀯... $20 million is crazy talk for one patient, but I get why the family wants it - they're essentially saying their mom's life didn't count or wasn't worth saving because of some staffing issues. It's like, what happened to basic human care? You know, stuff like 'don't let your patients get attacked' and 'keep them safe from harm'.

I'm also not buying the 'we'll investigate' vibe from NYC Health & Hospitals - if they're really that concerned about their reputation, they should be sharing more info on what happened instead of playing dumb. And what's up with the lack of accountability measures in place? Like, how many times have we seen this before where a patient dies due to some hospital staff screwing up?

It's also not just the family who needs justice - I think we need to be having a bigger conversation about why our public hospitals are so understaffed and underfunded. Is it because they're not making enough money? Because it feels like we're always expecting too little from them for too little cost. Like, what's the point of having a 'public' hospital if it's just gonna be a sad, inadequate version of a real hospital?

This is getting ridiculous 🀯. Hospitals gotta do better than this. Who gets beat up by their roommate in the hospital? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Not anyone who should be there, that's for sure.

Staff just chillin', not tellin' nobody about what's goin' down... poor woman died, now her family's fightin' for answers πŸ’”. Should've been able to prevent this with some actual care, ya know? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking. 20 million dollars can't bring Cynthia back, but I hope it brings some answers and justice for her family. the fact that hospital staff didn't even tell Tanesha about the head trauma is mind-blowing. how could they not keep a patient safe? it's like they were just going through the motions. this case needs to be thoroughly investigated so we can make sure this doesn't happen again at any public hospital. 🀝

The recent allegations surrounding the death of 55-year-old Cynthia Vann at Lincoln Hospital are absolutely disheartening πŸ’”. The fact that her family is now planning to sue the city for $20 million highlights the egregious failures of the hospital's staff and administration 🀯. It's unconscionable that patients like Vann, who were under their care, could be subjected to such gross neglect and inadequate protection from harm πŸš‘.

The notion that hospital staff failed to report critical information about Vann's condition, withheld medical details from her loved ones, and were negligent in their duties is a stark reminder of the need for greater accountability within our healthcare system πŸ’Έ. The emotional toll on Vann's family and loved ones is particularly devastating, as they struggle to cope with the loss of their matriarch and the unanswered questions surrounding her death πŸ€•.

It's imperative that we hold public hospitals like Lincoln Hospital accountable for their actions, and ensure that measures are in place to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future πŸ’ͺ. The $20 million lawsuit will likely shed more light on the systemic failures that led to Vann's tragic death, and serve as a catalyst for meaningful change πŸ”„.

πŸ˜• this is a total fail on the part of NY hospitals. they cant just sit back and watch someone get beat up in their own home... how hard is it to protect ppl from harm? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

This is crazy what happened to Cynthia Vann 🀯! Her family deserves so much better than what they got from Lincoln Hospital. I mean, 20 million dollars might be a lot, but it's just a number when you're talking about a life lost πŸ’”. It's not like the city is going to magically fix everything, but at least this lawsuit will bring some answers 🀝.

I feel for Tanesha and her family, they must be going through so much grief right now 😩. And Rev. Kevin McCall said it best - losing a loved one is hard enough, but when you don't even know the truth about their death? That's just heartbreaking ❀️.

We need to make sure that hospitals like Lincoln are held accountable for their actions 🚨. This kind of negligence can't be taken lightly, and we should all demand better care for our loved ones πŸ’―. The city needs to take responsibility for this and fix the system, not just pay a settlement πŸ’Έ.

You know what really gets me thinking? I was just reading this thread about a new type of plant species discovered in the Amazon 🌳 and I started thinking about how we always hear about these amazing breakthroughs in science, but nobody ever talks about the impact on the people living there who actually have to deal with it. Like, what if they can't even visit the places where this stuff is found? What does that do to their mental health? 🀯

And then I started thinking, if we're going to sue hospitals for negligence, shouldn't we also be questioning why people don't just leave public hospitals when things get bad? Like, isn't it obvious that Cynthia Vann should have known she was in danger? But what about all the times she didn't know her roommate was violent? What can you do in those situations, really?

It's just so... complex. πŸ€”

OMG 😱 this is so sad I mean $20 million lawsuit sounds crazy but I guess it's needed for the family of Cynthia Vann πŸ€• my aunt had some issues with her doctor too and she had to sue them like 3 times for malpractice 😳 anyway what was the deal with Racquel Haughton? like why did she attack her roommate in the hospital?? πŸ€” wasn't they supposed to be in a safe place or something? πŸ₯ my little brother got into a fight at school once and it was so scary but luckily he's okay now πŸ’•

omg this is so sad πŸ€• my heart goes out to cynthia's fam they deserve justice πŸ’― i dont know what went wrong but it cant be right that staff didnt keep her safe 🚫 hospitals are supposed to be places of healing not harm 🌟 we need to make sure something like this never happens again πŸ’ͺ

πŸ˜” this is just heartbreaking. 20 million dollars is a huge sum but imo its not enough for the family of cynthia vann considering she went through so much pain and suffering before passing away. i think hospitals need to be more transparent about patient conditions, especially in cases like this where staff knew or should've known something was wrong. 🀝
