Female cricket fans are part of a Broad church | Letters

A recent opinion piece sparked debate among female Guardian readers regarding the inclusion of male sporting analogies in articles about women's interests. However, it appears that many women are more knowledgeable and engaged with mainstream sports than often assumed.

One woman who has been attending men's cricket matches for over 40 years disputes the notion that female fans are out of touch or unfamiliar with certain figures, citing Stuart Broad as an example of a well-known male cricketer. She notes that while there may be rowdy "party" stands at some matches, women are increasingly present in larger numbers than men.

Another woman agrees that analogies can be used effectively without resorting to stereotypical, "blokey" language. In response to criticism over the use of Stuart Broad's name, she jokingly offers a compromise, comparing it to choosing not to walk, rather than an outside edge.

It's worth noting that the debate highlights some women's unfamiliarity with certain male figures, such as Stuart Broad. Nevertheless, this anecdotal evidence does little to support the claim that female Guardian readers are uniformly out of touch or uninterested in mainstream sports.

I got a major beef with these articles thinkin' women don't know squat about sports 🙄. Like, I know someone who's been goin' to cricket matches for ages and knows all the big names - Stuart Broad, Ashwell Robinson, the lot! She's not some clueless chick who thinks the ball goes over her head every time 😂. And yeah, maybe there are some rowdy lads in the stands, but women are just as into it, mate! It's about time we got some more balanced coverage of sports in the media 📰👍.

🏟️👀 when bae is lowkey a 40 yr old cricket stan and still got it 💁‍♀️💪 then u can't say females r outta touch 😂🤣 [GIF of a woman high-fiving at a cricket match]

I'm not buying it 🤔. Just 'cause one woman has been going to cricket matches for 40 yrs doesn't mean all women are equally knowledgeable about sports 🏟️. I'd love to see some actual stats on female sports fans vs male sports fans, like how many attend events or watch games? This anecdotally stuff ain't gonna cut it 🙅‍♂️. And yeah, analogies can be fun, but if you're gonna use a bloke's name, at least make sure it's not someone with a dodgy rep like Stuart Broad 😒. We need better sources than just one woman's take on this 📚.
