Flavor Flav Brings High-Energy Hype to US Bobsleigh Team as 'Hype Man'
American rapper Flavor Flav has taken on an unconventional role as the "hype man" for the US bobsleigh and skeleton team, bringing his signature high-energy persona to the Winter Olympics.
The 66-year-old founding member of Grammy-nominated hip-hop group Public Enemy was named as the official team sponsor during a ceremony in Utah earlier this week. Flav spent time with the team at their training track, trying out both skeleton and bobsleigh.
"It's cooler than Cool Runnings. It's Coolest Runnings," said Flav, referencing the 1993 film about the Jamaican bobsleigh team. The partnership is seen as a blessing for the US team, which aims to bring home medals in Milan and Cortina this February.
Flav's involvement with the Olympics isn't new; he served as the official hype man for the US women's water polo team at the Paris Olympics in 2024. He has also lent his support to tennis legend Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian, who recently made a financial contribution to discus thrower Veronica Fraley after she posted about her issues paying rent.
When Flav tried out skeleton, he was initially asked to start from a lower point on the track for safety reasons but refused. He insisted on starting higher up, leading to an exciting display of speed, reaching 67mph during his second run. Team officials praised Flav's spirit and enthusiasm, stating that the energy in the room was palpable.
The US Bobsled/Skeleton team is set to compete from February 6-22, with Flav expected to bring his signature style to their events.
