France might seek restrictions on VPN use in campaign to keep minors off social media

France is set to introduce even stricter regulations on social media access, with lawmakers eyeing a possible ban on virtual private networks (VPNs) as part of its efforts to keep minors off online platforms. Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs Anne Le Hénanff recently stated that VPNs could be the next target in the government's push to restrict children under 15 from accessing social media, citing concerns over their ability to circumvent existing age restrictions.

The move comes as France's National Assembly has already voted in favor of a ban on social media use for minors under the age of 15. The proposal aims to protect young users from potentially harmful content online, but critics argue that it could have unintended consequences for online privacy and data security.

Le Hénanff noted that while the current law would protect a large majority of children, the government wants to take further action to ensure their safety online. However, critics worry that introducing age verification requirements for VPNs would compromise the benefits of these services, which also offer essential protections for users' online privacy.

The move echoes similar efforts in other countries, such as the US, where 25 state-level laws have been introduced in the past two years aimed at reducing children's access to social media and sensitive content. However, experts caution that these efforts could lead to a patchwork of regulations that are difficult to enforce and may create more vulnerabilities for online users.

The French government's proposal is still in its early stages, but it highlights the growing concern over minors' online safety and the need for effective regulation to balance protection with individual freedoms. As the debate continues, lawmakers will need to carefully consider the potential implications of introducing stricter regulations on social media access and VPN use.

🤔 I think this is a pretty interesting move by France, but it also makes me wonder if they're really going about it the right way 🤷‍♀️. I mean, we all know that kids are smart these days, and banning VPNs just isn't gonna fly 🚫. What's next? A ban on online gaming or streaming services? That'd be a total overreach 🙅‍♂️.

And let's not forget about the whole 'digital divide' issue 😒. Not all kids have equal access to technology and internet, so you can't just blanket-ban social media for everyone 🌎. Plus, what about when they're older and need to use VPNs for work or travel? It'd be like taking away their keys 🚗.

I also think this is a slippery slope. If France starts restricting kids' online access, other countries are gonna follow suit 👀. Before you know it, we'll have some sort of global 'internet police' force 🔒, and that's just not cool 😎.

idk about this one 🤔 france is taking it a bit too far if u ask me 🙄 they wanna ban vpn's? that's like saying you can't have freedom online lol 😂 what's next, a ban on messaging apps or somethin'? i get it, minors need protection but the way they're goin about it is just too restrictive 🤷‍♂️ and what about all the other countries dat are doin the same thing? won't that create a bit of a mess? 🤯 anyway, gotta wait n see how dis all plays out 📺

it's interesting to think about what exactly are we trying to protect our kids from online... is it just the explicit stuff or are we also trying to shield them from the complexity and nuance of the digital world? i mean, we're not going to ban social media entirely, but maybe that's the right approach - instead of banning certain tools, we should be teaching our kids how to use them responsibly. and what about the parents' responsibility in all this? aren't they also part of the problem if they're letting their kids roam free online without guidance? 🤔

So great, just what we needed, more government overreach 🤦‍♂️. Like, who doesn't love a good 'for their own protection' move that basically means 'we can control you'? 🙄 I mean, come on, VPNs are like the ultimate online privacy superheroes - now they're being villainized? 😂

And let's talk about the whole "balance protection with individual freedoms" thing... sounds like a total cop-out to me 🤔. How about we balance it out by giving people some actual autonomy over their own devices and online activities? 💻 I'm all for protecting minors, but can't we do this without suffocating everyone else in the process? 🤷‍♀️

And have you guys noticed that every time there's a push for "online safety" or "minors' protection", it always seems to involve some kind of blanket ban or restriction? 🚫 Where's the nuance, folks? 🤦‍♂️ Can't we just have a discussion about this stuff without resorting to knee-jerk reactions and hypotheticals? 💬

I'm a bit worried about this move in France 🤔... I get why they want to protect minors from online harm, but restricting VPN use could be super problematic for people who already rely on them for security reasons 😬. It's like, what's the government gonna do next? Banned encryption too? 🚫💻

I'm not saying that social media companies aren't responsible for protecting kids, 'cause they totally are 👍... but this feels like a big overreach to me 🤷‍♀️. I mean, how's it gonna affect all the legit VPN users who just wanna keep their online life private? 🤐

It's also super concerning that this move is just part of a bigger trend in countries around the world 🌎... like, what's the end goal here? Is it really about keeping kids safe or just about controlling people's online behavior? 🤔 I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out 🔮

omg i feel like they're being way too harsh on kids lol france is always trying to be the buzzkill 😒 so now they wanna ban social media for 15 year olds? that's like, kinda crazy 🤯 what about their online lives tho? it's not all sunshine and rainbows out there 👀 anyway i've been thinking of getting a vpn myself since my family is super strict about online safety 🙈 i'm like 25 btw 🎉
