Fundraiser Planned for Displaced Leland House Residents as Tenants Wait for Answers

A community fundraiser is set to take place this Friday at the Lager House in Detroit, with the aim of raising money to support displaced residents of the historic Leland House. The event will be held from 8 pm and will feature a DJ lineup, raffle prizes, information booths, and "dancing for solidarity" activities.

The fundraiser comes after a major electrical failure forced residents out of the building over a month ago. Many tenants are currently staying at the Red Roof Inn in Southfield, where the city is paying for their hotel rooms. The event organizers have stated that the donations collected will be split evenly among 27 displaced residents.

Artist and percussionist Daryl Stewart, who has lived at the Leland since 2012, expressed his concerns about the ongoing situation. "We're sticking together because we still don't know what's going on," he said, adding that the displacement has been difficult emotionally for many tenants. "It's like being in another world out here."

Stewart also pointed out that the uncertainty surrounding the building's future is causing financial strain on residents, who need money for basic necessities such as travel, groceries, and clothes. He noted that the city's fire marshal ordered a mandatory evacuation of the 20-story Leland House following the electrical malfunction.

The fundraiser is separate from an online GoFundMe campaign launched in early December to support the Leland City Club, which drew scrutiny after questions surfaced about whether the proceeds were used to pay DTE Energy. The event at the Lager House aims to directly support displaced residents and provide them with a sense of solidarity and community.

Residents are still waiting for answers about their future living arrangements and concerns that the building could suffer structural damage due to the prolonged lack of electricity. As Stewart said, "It's been really hard."

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, who needs a party when you're dealing with actual problems like electrical failures and displacement? But hey, if it gets people together and raises some cash for those affected, that's awesome πŸ’Έ. 27 residents will get an even split of the donations, so fingers crossed they can get back to their lives soon 🀞. The fact that it's taking this long to figure out what's going on is just...wow 😩. At least the city's paying for the Red Roof Inn, or at least most of it πŸ€‘. I hope Daryl Stewart gets some comfort from all the solidarity – he seems like he's got a lot on his plate right now πŸ€•.

awww this is so sad πŸ€• what's going on with those ppl at Leland house? it's not right they're just stuck out there waiting for answers πŸ€” and no one knows when they'll be able to move back in πŸ πŸ’” the city needs to step up and help them out ASAP 🚨❀️ the fundraiser at Lager House is a great idea let's get behind those tenants and show them some love πŸ’• especially with all the uncertainty and stuff... 🀞

omg I'm literally so worried about those ppl πŸ€• they've been through so much already and it's just not fair that they're stuck in this limbo without a roof over their heads. 1 month is a long time to be living out of a hotel room and it's not like the city is taking responsibility for its own mistakes πŸ™„ I mean, what kinda city lets a building sit idle for months because of an electrical issue?

anyway, I'm happy that ppl are coming together to help them out 🀝 it's gonna be awesome to see all those dancers showin' solidarity and having a good time (who doesn't love dancing tho?) πŸ•Ί at least for one night, they can forget about their worries. Fingers crossed that the fundraiser and GoFundMe campaign can make a difference and help those displaced residents get back on their feet 🀞

I'm keepin' an eye on this Leland House situation πŸ€”...it's crazy how some things can just fall apart (literally) like that electrical failure. I feel bad for these folks who got displaced and are now stuck at the Red Roof Inn, it's not their fault, you know? πŸ˜• The city is doin' better than them in terms of findin' 'em a place to stay but they need some actual help with basic stuff like food and clothes...it's just not right. This fundraiser sounds like a good start tho πŸ‘

man, this is such a bummer πŸ€•... 27 ppl stuck without a home cuz of an electrical fail 🚨 it's like they're living in limbo πŸ•°οΈ... i'm all for the fundraiser at the Lager House, DJ's and raffle prizes are always a win πŸ’ƒπŸ½πŸŽ but what's the holdup on gettin' those ppl back into their place? πŸ˜’ is it just a case of bureaucratic red tape or somethin' more πŸ€” meanwhile, these residents are out there chillin at the Red Roof Inn πŸ‘‹... i feel for Daryl Stewart, he's been livin in that building since 2012, can you imagine? πŸ’• we gotta keep showin solidarity with these ppl until they get their answers 🀝 #LelandHouse #DetroitStrong #DisplacedResidentsDeserveHelp

πŸ€• this is just another example of how some people in power don't care about the little guys 🚫 they're leaving these ppl stranded for months and now it's like they're all stuck together waiting for answers πŸ’” meanwhile the city is just paying for their hotels 🏨 what a joke πŸ˜‚ we need to raise more funds and show them that we won't forget about leland house πŸ‘Š

I'm gonna say something crazy... I think the whole situation at Leland House is a blessing in disguise 🀯. I know it sounds harsh, but hear me out. The displaced residents are being taken care of by the city and they get to experience life outside their building for a bit. It's like a mini-vacation, right? 🌴 And who knows, maybe this temporary arrangement will give them the chance to rebuild and come back stronger than ever.

Also, think about it, if the building was meant to be condemned due to structural damage, why did it take an electrical failure to expose that? It's like fate, man. The city might've been hiding some problems under the rug, but now we know and they can fix it properly πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

It's not all doom and gloom, fam 😊. Let's focus on supporting these residents with a good cause and maybe, just maybe, this whole ordeal will lead to something amazing πŸ’«.
