Google Discover is testing AI-generated headlines and they aren't good

Google is putting its money where its mouth is with regards to Artificial Intelligence, and it's showing up in Google Discover with some results. In a move that may be seen as innocuous by some, Google has started experimenting with AI-generated headlines for articles featured in the platform.

However, The Verge discovered that these AI-generated headlines often deviate from the original article titles and sometimes lead to inaccurate summaries. One example was when an AI-generated headline claimed "Steam Machine price revealed," but the actual title of the Ars Technica article read "Valve's Steam Machine looks like a console, but donโ€™t expect it to be priced like one." A stark contrast between the two reveals how problematic this can be.

Google has confirmed that these are just a small-scale UI experiments aimed at improving user experience by displaying topic details easier to digest. However, given Google's history of often being at odds with online media, publishers have good reason to be skeptical about their intentions. The company's past actions towards web publishers, such as cutting them out from search results and claiming that showing news doesn't do much for the bottom line, raise eyebrows.

Despite this, AI enthusiasts will get a chance to experience even more of Google's chatbot integration. In an announcement on X, Robby Stein, Vice President of Product at Google Search, confirmed that AI Mode is getting closer integration into the mobile search platform. However, some are skeptical about how far this will go and whether it truly serves users' interests.

With Google's latest foray into AI-generated headlines, one thing is certain โ€“ AI has become a part of our online experience, but what does this mean for accuracy and fairness?

๐Ÿ˜ฌ i'm low-key freaking out about google's AI news experiment. like, yeah they wanna make it easier to digest info for us, but don't we deserve actual accurate info too?!?! ๐Ÿ˜’ they're basically playing with the news fire without making sure it doesn't burn our trust. and what really gets me is how far are we supposed to take this? are we gonna just let them serve up whatever they want and call it a day ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” This whole thing with Google's AI-generated headlines just made me wonder, what's the true cost of convenience? We're all about getting the info we need quickly, without having to dig through each article title, but at what expense? Are these AI-created headlines really serving us better or are they just simplifying things for Google's own gain ๐Ÿค‘? And what about accountability? If an AI system can produce headlines that deviate from the original content, how do we know what's actually happening? It feels like the lines between truth and fiction are getting blurred ๐Ÿ“บ.

๐Ÿ˜Š I'm getting a little uneasy about Google's AI experiments. On one hand, they're trying to improve user experience, which sounds cool. But when it comes down to it, who gets to decide what's 'easier to digest' for us users? ๐Ÿค” I mean, I know they're just testing some UI stuff, but it makes me wonder if we're losing control over the content we consume online. Like, if an AI can make a headline that's way off from the actual article, how do we even trust what we see? ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐Ÿ’ป It's all about finding that balance between innovation and accuracy, you know? ๐Ÿค

omg is google trying to steal the future or something?! ๐Ÿค– they're basically altering article titles to make them sound more clickbait-y ๐Ÿ˜‚ but on a serious note, how are we supposed to know if those headlines are even accurate anymore? ๐Ÿค” i mean i've seen some weird stuff happen with AI-generated content before... like that one time i came across a fake news article about a viral dance challenge ๐Ÿ•บ it was super convincing! ๐Ÿ‘€ anyway, i'm all for innovation and making user experience better, but we gotta keep an eye on how Google's handling this AI thing... ๐Ÿ’ก

omg you guys i'm low-key freaking out about google's ai experiment ๐Ÿคฏ they're literally generating headlines on the fly and it's not even close to how accurate it is ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ like i saw an example where they made a steam machine article sound like it was about something entirely different lol what if this happens with actual news articles? ๐Ÿ“ฐ that would be super problematic tbh

omg u guys i was thinking the same thing when i saw those ai generated headlines on google discover like wut if they're not even close to the real article title???? i was reading about something and that headline said "new study says eating avocado daily will lower your risk of heart disease" but my actual article was like "nope avocados are still bad for u". i was so confused lol anyway google is trying to improve user experience or whatever but i get why ppl r skeptical about their intentions especially with all the times they've messed with web publishers and stuff...i mean can we trust them with our online info??? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ญ

I'm not sure I like this new trend of using AI to make headlines ๐Ÿค”. It sounds too automated for me, you know? Like, can't we just stick with the actual title from the article? ๐Ÿ“„ Those examples from The Verge are pretty wild - who wants a headline that says one thing but shows something entirely different? ๐Ÿ˜ณ I mean, sure, it's trying to make things easier for users and all, but at what cost? ๐Ÿค‘ Publishers might not like this since Google's history isn't exactly sunshine-and-rainbows when it comes to working with online media. ๐Ÿ’” But on the flip side, AI is pretty cool stuff - maybe we'll get even more awesome features in the future? ๐Ÿ”ฅ Just gotta make sure it's all accurate and fair for everyone ๐Ÿค!

I'm low-key worried about these AI-generated headlines ๐Ÿค”. I mean, Google says they're just experimenting with improving user experience, but when you see the actual article title vs the headline, it's like night and day ๐ŸŒƒ. And yeah, I get why publishers are skeptical โ€“ it feels like Google is trying to take control of what we see online again ๐Ÿšซ.

But at the same time, AI can be a game-changer for accuracy and stuff ๐Ÿ˜Š. If done right, it could help surface relevant articles that we'd otherwise miss. It's all about finding that balance, you know? I'm curious to see how this plays out โ€“ do you think Google's got our best interests at heart ๐Ÿ’ฏ or are they just trying to squeeze more juice from their AI experiments ๐Ÿค–

I'm low-key worried about these AI-generated headlines ๐Ÿค”. I mean, think about it - they're already deviating from the original article titles and sometimes giving wrong summaries ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ‘Ž. It's like Google is trying to rewrite history before we even read the article ๐Ÿ˜ณ. And let's not forget their past struggles with online media ๐Ÿ’ธ. They've cut out publishers from search results and said showing news doesn't help them make money... it's hard to trust their intentions ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

On the other hand, I get why they're experimenting with this - AI is becoming a big part of our lives ๐Ÿ’ป. But we gotta be careful about accuracy and fairness ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ‘ฎ. If Google is gonna use AI-generated headlines, it should at least try to be accurate ๐Ÿ”. It's not just about convenience; it's about truth ๐Ÿ“ฐ.

I'm also curious to see how far this AI Mode integration will go ๐Ÿค”. Will it really make our search experience better or just lead to more fake news ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐Ÿšจ? Only time will tell, but I'll be keeping an eye on this ๐Ÿ‘€.

man, i'm low-key concerned about google's ai experiments ๐Ÿค–... they're trying to show us they care about user experience, but it sounds like they're just playing with fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. those deviated headlines are wild... like, who makes a headline that's completely different from the article? ๐Ÿคฏ and yeah, there's that whole web publisher thing going on... google's always been kinda sketchy when it comes to treating publishers fairly ๐Ÿ’ธ. i think we need more transparency around these ai experiments before they get out of hand ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

Google's experimenting with AI-generated headlines in Discover, it's kinda wild ๐Ÿคฏ. I think it's cool they're trying to improve user experience, but at the same time, publishers should be worried about their intentions ๐Ÿค‘. I mean, we've seen Google cut out some pretty big names from search results before, so it's hard not to wonder if this is just another way for them to exert control ๐Ÿค”.

On the other hand, AI enthusiasts are gonna love seeing more chatbot integration in mobile search ๐Ÿ”. But let's not get too carried away โ€“ we need to make sure that these tools actually serve users' interests and aren't just serving Google's own agenda ๐Ÿ“Š. It's a tricky balance, but I think it's something we should be paying attention to ๐Ÿ‘€.

One thing's for sure, AI is here to stay, and we need to start thinking critically about how it's impacting our online lives ๐Ÿ’ก. What do you guys think? Are we just along for the ride with Google's AI experiments ๐Ÿš€?

AI is getting so smart, but can it be trusted? ๐Ÿค” I mean, Google's trying to help us with these AI-generate headlines, but it sounds like they're just messing with the original title. It's like they want to control what we see first - isn't that kinda manipulative? ๐Ÿ’ก And what about all those publishers who get hurt when Google starts "favoring" certain articles over others? That's a major red flag for me. ๐Ÿšจ I'm not saying AI can't be useful, but we gotta keep an eye on this and make sure it doesn't become some kinda puppet master controlling our feeds. ๐Ÿ’ป

omg u guys i just read about google experimenting with ai-generated headlines in their discover platform ๐Ÿคฏ like how are they gonna ensure the headlines dont lead ppl astray lol its kinda weird that its not even clear wether its a deliberate attempt to mislead or just an accident ๐Ÿค” and lets be real who doesnt trust google's intentions after all the drama w/ web publishers ๐Ÿ“‰ anyway i guess its cool 4 ai enthusiasts tho ๐Ÿค– but i think we gotta keep a close eye on this cuz accuracy & fairness r key ๐Ÿ‘€

I'm tellin' ya... ๐Ÿคฏ this whole AI thing got me thinkin'. I remember when we used to get those news summaries on your homepage and they'd be so short it was like 2 sentences max. Nowadays it's all about the clicks and the views, right? ๐Ÿ’ธ And Google's just tryna optimize everything for user experience... but at what cost? ๐Ÿค”

I mean, think about it. AI-generated headlines might sound good on paper, but when you're talkin' about news articles, accuracy is key. You can't just rely on some algorithm to get the summary right. It's like they say: "garbage in, garbage out"... and if that's the case, then what's the point? ๐Ÿšฎ

And don't even get me started on Google's track record with web publishers. They've been doin' some shady stuff over the years... ๐Ÿค‘ cutting them out from search results, sayin' news don't matter for revenue... it's just not right.

I dunno, maybe I'm just old-school, but this whole AI revolution thing got me thinkin' we're losin' somethin' in the process. ๐Ÿ˜

I'm keeping an eye on this ๐Ÿค”. So they're testing out AI-generated headlines, but it seems like they might not be working too well... I mean, how can you trust the headline if it's not even close to the actual article title? And what about all the times when they might make things up or twist them to sound more exciting? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ That's where the accuracy and fairness come in โ€“ we need to be sure that the info we're getting is true, you know?

I'm also a bit worried about Google's history with web publishers. They've had some shady dealings in the past when it comes to search results and news... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ You never know what their motives are, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this AI thing to see if it's really just about improving user experience or something more.
