Gov. Hochul seeks restrictions on 3D printers and ghost guns

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is pushing for stricter regulations on 3D printers and ghost guns as the state legislature enters a new session.

Under the proposed bill, all 3D printers sold in New York would be required to come equipped with software that blocks the creation of ghost guns and their components. This measure aims to prevent DIY gun traffickers from setting up makeshift firearm factories at home.

Governor Hochul is taking aim at an issue she describes as a "dangerously escalating trend". The NYPD has recovered hundreds of 3D-printed guns every year, with over 1,600 ghost guns seized during the previous administration. Ghost guns are being used increasingly in shootings, and police say they're getting more and more difficult to track.

To address this issue, Hochul's plan would establish minimum safety standards for 3D printer manufacturers, requiring them to include technology that prevents their products from creating firearms and component parts. Possessing or distributing online instructions for making ghost guns would also become a crime under the proposed bill.

Additionally, Hochul is seeking to pass new requirements on gun manufacturers to design pistols that can't be easily modified into automatic weapons using external devices like Glock switches.

Gun control experts are hailing the proposal as a necessary step to combat the growing threat of ghost guns. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has praised the plan, saying it would provide "new tools" for law enforcement to hold people accountable. Hochul's State of the State address will provide more details on her proposals next week.

I think Governor Hochul is taking a proactive approach to addressing this emerging issue of DIY gun manufacturing πŸ€”. The rise of 3D printing technology has indeed democratized access to firearms, which can be both empowering and terrifying, depending on the context 😬. By pushing for stricter regulations on 3D printers and ghost guns, Hochul is seeking to prevent what she calls a "dangerously escalating trend" from gaining momentum 🚨.

It's fascinating to note how this issue highlights the tension between technological innovation and public safety πŸ’‘. On one hand, 3D printing technology has the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare and manufacturing; on the other hand, its misuse can have devastating consequences πŸ’”. Hochul's proposal aims to strike a balance by establishing minimum safety standards for 3D printer manufacturers and prohibiting online instructions for making ghost guns πŸ“š.

Overall, I believe that this proposal represents a necessary step towards mitigating the risks associated with ghost gun manufacturing and promoting public safety πŸ™.

I'm so down with Kathy Hochul's new bill πŸ™Œ! The idea of 3D printer regulation is long overdue, especially considering how easy it is for DIY gun traffickers to set up shop at home 🀯. I mean, who wants to deal with the risk of ghost guns being used in shootings? It's a big issue and we need all the help we can get πŸ’‘.

I'm also loving the part about requiring gun manufacturers to design pistols that can't be easily modified into automatic weapons πŸ”©. That's like, totally common sense, right? And possession or distribution of online instructions for making ghost guns should definitely become a crime 🚫.

It's awesome that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is on board with this proposal πŸ’―. Law enforcement needs all the tools they can get to keep our communities safe 🌟. Fingers crossed Hochul's State of the State address provides more details and we can start seeing some real change soon 🀞

omg u gotta be kidding me 🀯... 3D printers with ghost gun blockers is like, totally genius πŸ”§πŸ’»! i mean think about it, these DIY gun makers r getting super creative & making firearms at home like its nobodies business 🚫. and now we gotta deal w/ all the shootings & police can't even track 'em down easily πŸ€•... this proposal by Gov Hochul makes total sense. requiring 3D printer manufacturers to include safety tech is a no-brainer πŸ’‘! & yeah, it's about time someone took action against these online ghost gun instructions πŸ“. let's just hope it doesn't lead to ppl getting super creative w/ other stuff too... πŸ€” still, kudos 2 Gov Hochul for taking charge πŸ‘

omg i cant believe hes finally taking action 🀯 this ghost gun thing is super scary - i mean i get that people have a right to bear arms but come on these 3d printed guns are like something from a sci-fi movie 😱 and yep the NYPD has been finding tons of them every year so its about time gov Hochul steps in πŸ’ͺ her plan sounds solid tho requiring those safety standards on 3d printers is a good start πŸ‘ plus making it harder for people to just get online instructions for making ghost guns would definitely help πŸ”’ i mean gun control experts are saying this is necessary and Alvin Bragg is on board so fingers crossed it passes 🀞

I'm low-key excited about this πŸ€”, I mean who doesn't want safer streets? But at the same time, I gotta wonder if this is gonna be a slippery slope, you know? Like, what's next? Regs on 3D printing toys or something? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, ghost guns are a real issue and it's about time someone took action. I mean, police can't track them and they're being used in shootings...it's just not cool 🚫. I'm all for gun control and making sure manufacturers do their part to keep people safe πŸ‘. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out next week during Hochul's State of the State address πŸ’¬

πŸ€” just saw this news about Governor Hochul's proposal to regulate 3D printers and ghost guns... gotta think, it's crazy how quickly these things are being made at home πŸš€ and used in shootings. feels like we're getting outsmarted by some pretty tech-savvy bad guys πŸ”΄. think the idea of including software that blocks the creation of ghost guns is a good one, but also wonder if it'll be enough to keep up with these DIY gun traffickers...

πŸ€” I mean, can you think of anything that could be done about ghost guns but stricter regulations? It's crazy to me that just a few years ago we didn't even know what those were 🚫πŸ’₯ and now they're becoming an actual issue. I'm not saying this plan is perfect or all-inclusive, but I guess it's a good starting point. The fact that the NYPD has already been dealing with hundreds of these 3D-printed guns every year is just wild 🀯. And I get why Hochul wants to crack down on DIY gun traffickers – those people are clearly up to no good πŸ˜’. So yeah, if this bill passes and it makes a dent in the ghost gun problem, then I'm all for it πŸ’ͺ
