Heated Rivalry: this horny gay ice hockey drama has everyone talking – but is it any good?

"Heated Rivalry" - The Ice Hockey Romance That's Heating Up the Wrong Way

The latest drama series from HBO Max, "Heated Rivalry", has been making waves with its steamy scenes and brooding romance between two gay ice hockey players. But beneath the surface, it's a show that's more concerned with titillating its audience than actually exploring the complexities of masculinity, homoeroticism, and identity in sports.

Creator Jacob Tierney's vision is clear: he wants to create a show that's all about sex, passion, and rivalry on the ice. And boy, does it deliver - in more ways than one. The chemistry between Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams as Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander is undeniable, but their tumultuous relationship feels more like a convenience plot device than an organic development.

The show's biggest problem lies in its lack of attention to detail when it comes to the world of professional ice hockey. With so little emphasis on the sport itself, "Heated Rivalry" ends up feeling more like a shallow exercise in "hate-to-love" romance than a genuine exploration of identity and community.

When we do get some insight into the characters' personal lives, it's often relegated to clichéd platitudes about being "secretly gay" and struggling with one's true self. It's a tired trope that feels more like a cheap stereotype than a nuanced commentary on the human experience.

The performances from Storrie and Williams are occasionally bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming season. But even their charisma can't save this show from its overall lack of depth and substance.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment is how "Heated Rivalry" reinforces existing stereotypes about gay men and the sports world. It's a show that seems content to exploit gay culture without truly understanding it, instead relying on titillating scenes and clichéd dialogue.

In short, while "Heated Rivalry" might provide some fleeting thrills for its audience, it's a show that ultimately fails to deliver in terms of substance and nuance. Will it leave you feeling satisfied? Probably not.

I don't know man, I just can't get on board with this one 🤷‍♂️. Ice hockey is such a cool sport but "Heated Rivalry" makes it feel like just another excuse for hot guys to hook up 😒. And those brooding romances? So predictable 🙄. I mean, where's the depth? The character development? It feels like they're just checking off boxes instead of creating actual stories. And don't even get me started on the stereotypes 🚫. I want a show that explores the complexities of identity and community in sports, not just exploits them for cheap thrills 😒.

This new show is like a hot mess 🔥💔. I'm all about the sizzling romance between those ice hockey players 👊🏻❤️, but come on, let's not forget about the actual sport, ya know? 🏒️ It's like they're trying to pass off some bland drama as depth and substance 🤦‍♂️. And don't even get me started on that whole "secretly gay" trope... 😴 it's so played out! The actors are pretty cool though, Connor Storrie is giving me all the feels 😍. Maybe I'll stick around to see if they can redeem themselves in future seasons 🤞. But for now, it's a solid 2/10 ⭐⭐

I'm so disappointed in this new show 🤕. I love ice hockey, and as a fan, it would've been awesome to see a drama series that really captured the spirit of the sport 🏒️. But instead, it just feels like they're phoning it in - all about the sexy bits, not the actual game or the guys' lives off the ice 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on how they portray gay characters... it's so basic and stereotypical 😒. I mean, come on, can't we do better than that? We need more nuanced storytelling, not just a bunch of brooding looks and awkward silences 💔. Give me a break, HBO Max 🙄. This one's a deflating disappointment for me 📺

I'm low-key disappointed in this show, but at the same time, I kinda get why people are into it 🤷‍♂️. The romance between those two hockey players is pretty steamy, no doubt about that 🔥. But when I think about it, maybe we're just expecting too much from a drama series? Like, do we really need to explore every single layer of the characters' identities and experiences on screen? 🤔

And honestly, I'm a bit tired of all these "secretly gay" tropes in media. Can't we just have complex, multidimensional characters for once? 🙄 But at the same time...I guess some shows are just more about giving us a quick thrill or two than trying to tackle deeper themes. And hey, if that's what people want from "Heated Rivalry", then I suppose it'll keep 'em coming back for more 😊.

It's weird, though - on one hand, I love the chemistry between Storrie and Williams; they're pretty great together 👍. But on another hand...I don't know, maybe I just expect too much from a TV show? Like, is it really asking too much to want some actual substance and nuance in our dramas? 🤷‍♂️

man i just finished watching heated rivalry on hbo max and i gotta say it felt like they were more worried about making our eyes water than actually exploring the complexities of gay identity in sports 🤷‍♂️ i mean don't get me wrong, connor and hudson's chemistry is real but their romance feels so forced it's like they're trying to make us believe that all these cliches about being "secretly gay" are true lol

i'm also super disappointed that they didn't do more research on the actual sport of ice hockey i mean who watches ice hockey for the romance? not me that's for sure 🏒️ what i really want is to see some nuanced exploration of masculinity, community, and identity in sports but instead we get shallow sex scenes and overused tropes

i think they're missing the point of what makes sports so great - it's about the rush of adrenaline, the thrill of competition, and the camaraderie with your teammates not just some contrived love story 💔

I'm totally loving the steamy scenes in this new series... 🤗 but like, can we talk about how they're also super problematic? I mean, the way they portray gay men in sports is just so tired and unrealistic. It's like, hello, being a gay athlete isn't that simple! The show needs to do more than just throw some swoony romance scenes together.

And don't even get me started on the "secretly gay" trope... 🙄 it's like, come on, can't we do better than that? I'm all for representation, but this is just a lazy way of tackling complex issues. The show needs to dig deeper and explore more nuanced themes, not just rely on cheap drama.

But despite all my complaints... 😒 the chemistry between the leads is actually pretty strong. Maybe they can redeem themselves in future seasons by tackling some actual substance? 🤞

I'm kinda disappointed with this new ice hockey drama series 🤔... I mean, I love a good rom-com as much as the next person, but "Heated Rivalry" just feels like a shallow attempt to cash in on the 'hate-to-love' thing 🔥. They're not even trying to explore what it means to be gay in sports, and instead we get all these tired stereotypes about being 'secretly gay'. It's so clichéd 🙄. And don't even get me started on how little they actually know about ice hockey... I mean, if you're gonna make a show about it, at least try to get the basics right 😂. The chemistry between the two leads is alright, but it's not enough to save this show from its lack of depth and substance 🤷‍♂️. If you want a good sports drama, there are better shows out there...

omg i agree lol the chemistry between connor & hudson is def there but like its not enough to save the whole show from being so basic 🙄. they need 2 actually explore the hockey world more than just use it as a backdrop 4 their steamy scenes 👀. and omg the trope about gay men struggling w/ identity? so played out 🙅‍♂️. i need more depth & nuance in my shows, u feel? 😩

🤔 I just watched this drama series on HBO Max and gotta say...it's a total mess 🎬😒 The romance is super steamy but it feels so fake 💋👀 And don't even get me started on how they messed up the hockey part 🏒😡 Like, come on guys, you can't just slap some drama and romance on top of sports and call it a day ⚠️ The characters are all super 2D too 📺💔 No depth, no nuance...just a bunch of clichés 😴 And honestly? It's kinda problematic how they portray gay culture 🤷‍♂️💁‍♀️ Like, can't we do better than that? 🤞

I don't know, guys... I was hyped for this show but now I'm kinda underwhelmed 🤔. I mean, the romance is def hot 🔥, but I wish they'd delved deeper into the characters' emotions and experiences. It feels like a shallow "hate-to-love" thing 🤷‍♂️. And can we talk about how little actual hockey we get? 😂 Like, if you're gonna do sports drama, at least put in some effort to understand the sport itself ⛸️. The performances were meh too 🙄. I just wanted more substance and nuance from this show 💔. Guess it's back to rewatching my actual fave hockey shows 📺

I'm so over shows like this, they just feel like lazy storytelling 🙄. I mean, can't we get something more substantial than just "hate-to-love" romance? It's like the creators took every tired trope and mashed them all together into one big mess 🤯. And don't even get me started on the lack of attention to detail when it comes to ice hockey - it's like they didn't even care about getting the details right ❄️. The show's biggest problem is that it's all surface level, no real depth or substance 📚. It feels like they just wanted to create a "guilty pleasure" for viewers and didn't bother putting in any effort 💁‍♀️. Anyway, I'm gonna stick to shows that actually make me think, not just titillate my senses 😏.

idk how much more of this sappy rom-com sports drama i can take lol 🤣 the "heated rivalry" is literally just an excuse for some dude's ego to get bruised on the ice. and don't even get me started on the lack of actual hockey skills on display 😂 it's like they took a few ice rinks, threw in some fake love story, and called it a day 🚫 i mean, what even is the point of this show? just to make us feel all mushy inside while ignoring the real issues with sports culture? 🤦‍♂️

I'm kinda disappointed with this new HBO Max series, "Heated Rivalry". It feels like they're trying to distract us from the real issues by throwing a bunch of sexy scenes and a fake love story at us. I mean, what's the point of creating a show that's all about titillating its audience when you could be exploring the complexities of identity in sports? 🤔

I think the biggest problem is that they're not taking the time to get into the nitty-gritty details of professional ice hockey. It's like they're trying to just coast on the romance between the two leads without putting in any real effort to develop the story.

And don't even get me started on the stereotypes about gay men and sports. I'm all for representation, but this show feels like it's perpetuating some tired tropes instead of pushing the boundaries. It's like they're more concerned with being edgy than actually creating something meaningful. 😐

🤔 I'm telling you, this whole thing is super staged 🎬. The way they're portraying those gay hockey players like they're living their best lives on the ice is just too perfect 😒. It's all about the drama and the romance, but what about the real issues facing the LGBTQ+ community in sports? I mean, have you seen the lack of representation? It's like they're leaving out a huge chunk of the story 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on those "clichéd platitudes" 😒. It's just so... convenient 💼. Can we not expect more depth and substance from our entertainment? I'm calling BS on this one 👎.

I'm just gonna say, if u wanna make a good ice hockey drama, focus on the game itself 🏒️, don't just rely on steamy scenes & clichéd tropes. The sports world is full of complexities & emotions, don't oversimplify it. Give me some real depth & character development over 'hate-to-love' romance any day 💔

I'm kinda disappointed with the way this show is handling the gay sports community. I feel like they're relying too much on stereotypes and shallow drama instead of really exploring the complexities of identity, masculinity, and what it means to be part of a marginalized group in sports. 🤔 I wish they'd dug deeper into the characters' personal lives and experiences, but instead we get cookie-cutter "gay secret" tropes that feel like they've been ripped straight from a bad rom-com script. And let's be real, if you're gonna make a show about gay hockey players, you gotta do better than just exploiting their culture for titillating scenes 🏒💔

🤔🏒️ I was kinda hoping for more depth in the hockey scenes, u know? 📊 Like, how do these pro players deal with pressure, rivalries, and relationships outside the rink? 🤷‍♂️ The show barely touches on that. And yeah, those "secretly gay" tropes can get old quick 😴. I want more substance over just steamy scenes all day 💁‍♀️. Maybe they'll revamp it for season 2? 🤞

I'm so over this show already... 🙄 It just feels like they're relying on the "tortured soul" trope for gay characters without actually putting in the effort to make them feel like real people. And don't even get me started on how inaccurate their portrayal of ice hockey is - I mean, come on guys, you can't just gloss over all the hard work and skill that goes into being a pro athlete! 🏒️ The performances are sometimes the only thing that saves this show from itself, but overall it feels like they're phoning it in. And what's up with the lack of nuance? It's like they think we're just here for the steamy scenes and not actually care about exploring deeper themes... 😒
