Herr's holds chip contest for America's 250th birthday, featuring flavors that embody freedom, liberty and unity

Herr's Celebrates 250th Anniversary of America's Independence with Chip Contest Featuring Flavors Inspired by Freedom, Liberty, and Unity.

Potato chips are a staple in many American households, but they weren't around during the Revolutionary War era. The first known recipe emerged in 1817, and it wasn't until the 1850s that chef George Crum popularized them. In celebration of America's 250th birthday, Herr's is hosting a chip contest to determine which flavors best embody the Founding Fathers' values of freedom, liberty, and unity.

From now until December 10th, fans can participate in "Flavored by Philly: Taste the 250," voting for their favorite ripple chip flavors in three categories. The winner of each category will be added to Herr's permanent lineup starting June 2026. This year's contenders include:

Liberty Flavors:
- Roasted Garlic BBQ
- Hickory BBQ
- Hot Honey BBQ

Freedom Flavors:
- Loaded Cheese Fries
- Cheesy Crab Dip
- Cheesy Bread

Unity Flavors:
- Jalapeño Cream Cheese
- Lemon Pepper
- Mango Habanero

According to Herr's officials, the flavors were inspired by spicy, cheesy, and barbecue foods commonly enjoyed at Fourth of July family gatherings. CEO Troy Gunden explained that these shared experiences make snacking fun and are the perfect representation of what makes Herr's chips special.

In previous years, Herr's has held similar contests, asking snackers to choose flavors inspired by local eateries in Philadelphia. Last year, voters chose Long Hots & Sharp Provolone as the winner, which joined the permanent lineup. This summer, fans will have another opportunity to influence what flavors make it onto Herr's shelves.

The winning chips will be available through the end of the summer and could potentially stay on the shelves longer if they become fan favorites.

I'm like "chip off the old block" when I think about this contest 🤣. They're celebrating America's 250th birthday with a chip-off, no pun intended! I mean, who wouldn't want to taste their way through the flavors of freedom, liberty, and unity? It's kinda cool how they drew inspiration from BBQs and Fourth of July fests – it feels like they're tapping into that nostalgic American summer vibe. Reminds me of when I was a kid, eating chips by the bucketload while watching fireworks with my family 🎇. Maybe these new flavors will become a staple like Long Hots & Sharp Provolone did last year? Fingers crossed! 😊

idk why herr's is making such a big deal about this chip contest 🤔... i mean, its just potato chips 🍟... are people really gonna vote for their favorite flavors based on freedom, liberty, and unity? seems kinda forced to me... what i do think is cool tho is that they're incorporating some pretty tasty-sounding flavors like jalapeño cream cheese and mango habanero 🤤 i wish i could participate in the contest but idk if i'd actually vote for a particular flavor over another... maybe its just me, but isnt the point of snacking just to enjoy something delicious on its own? 😐

Ugh 🤯, another ridiculous marketing gimmick from Herr's... Who thought it was a good idea to have a chip contest just because it's America's 250th birthday? 🎉 It's like they're trying to make me feel guilty for not buying their chips every time I snack on something. And what's with the weird flavor categories - Liberty, Freedom, and Unity? Sounds like a bunch of corporate-speak nonsense 😒.

I mean, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, go ahead and vote for your favorite chip flavors. But can't they just come up with some new and interesting flavors instead of rehashing the same old BBQ and cheesy stuff? 🤷‍♀️ The whole thing feels like a shallow attempt to cash in on patriotism without actually offering anything unique or meaningful.

And don't even get me started on the voting process - online, but I bet it's super tedious to fill out all those forms. Not exactly what I'd call "snacking fun". 😒 Can we just stick to making our own chips at home? 🍟

omg u guys i'm low-key stoked about herr's chip contest 🤩 they're literally celebrating americas 250th bday with a chip flavor contest lol can u imagine any flavor being more american than loaded cheese fries 🧀🔥?? i think jalapeño cream cheese is a solid winner tho 🔴 it's spicy, cheesy & perfect for a 4th of july bbq... but honestly any of these flavors would be lit on my snack game 🍿👌

I'm all about supporting local businesses 🌳, and it's awesome that Herr's is giving back to the community by hosting this chip contest! The idea of flavors inspired by freedom, liberty, and unity is so cool - I love how spicy and cheesy the options sound 🍟. Voting for your fave ripple chip flavors seems like a fun way to get involved and share what you're passionate about. Can't wait to try some new flavors this summer! 💪

I'm so excited for this chip contest! 🤩 The whole concept is pretty cool, especially with how they're tying in flavors inspired by Fourth of July gatherings. I mean, who doesn't love a good BBQ or cheesy snack at a family BBQ on the 4th? It's awesome that Herr's is giving fans the chance to vote for their fave ripple chip flavors and help shape what hits the shelves next year.

I do think some of these flavors sound pretty great though - Liberty Flavors like Roasted Garlic BBQ, Hickory BBQ, and Hot Honey BBQ are all winners in my book! 🤤 And I can see why they'd be inspired by those spicy, cheesy vibes. As for Unity Flavors, I'm not as sure about Jalapeño Cream Cheese... sounds a bit weird? But hey, to each their own right?

What's great is that Herr's isn't just introducing new flavors out of the blue - they're giving fans a say in what makes it onto their permanent lineup. It's all about community and making snacking fun! I'm def gonna be voting for my faves soon - who are you voting for? 🤔

Yaaas, I'm so down for a chip contest that's all about America's values 🤩! You know what's even better? If it's done right, it can be super entertaining to watch people go wild over their fave flavors 😂. So, here's my two cents - I think the Liberty Flavors are gonna kill, especially that Roasted Garlic BBQ 🤤. It's got that perfect balance of spice and savory. As for the Freedom Flavors, Loaded Cheese Fries is a solid choice 🍟. But, can we talk about how these flavors aren't really representing what America's all about? Like, isn't it more than just spicy or cheesy foods at family gatherings? 🤔 Still, I guess it's fun to indulge in some patriotic snacking 🎉.

Anyway, if you're feeling extra festive and wanna participate, go ahead and cast your votes! Maybe we'll get some new flavors that actually reflect the true meaning of freedom and unity 🤞. And who knows, maybe Long Hots & Sharp Provolone will make a comeback 👀. One thing's for sure - it's gonna be interesting to see what people choose 🤔.
