Herr's Celebrates 250th Anniversary of America's Independence with Chip Contest Featuring Flavors Inspired by Freedom, Liberty, and Unity.
Potato chips are a staple in many American households, but they weren't around during the Revolutionary War era. The first known recipe emerged in 1817, and it wasn't until the 1850s that chef George Crum popularized them. In celebration of America's 250th birthday, Herr's is hosting a chip contest to determine which flavors best embody the Founding Fathers' values of freedom, liberty, and unity.
From now until December 10th, fans can participate in "Flavored by Philly: Taste the 250," voting for their favorite ripple chip flavors in three categories. The winner of each category will be added to Herr's permanent lineup starting June 2026. This year's contenders include:
Liberty Flavors:
- Roasted Garlic BBQ
- Hickory BBQ
- Hot Honey BBQ
Freedom Flavors:
- Loaded Cheese Fries
- Cheesy Crab Dip
- Cheesy Bread
Unity Flavors:
- Jalapeño Cream Cheese
- Lemon Pepper
- Mango Habanero
According to Herr's officials, the flavors were inspired by spicy, cheesy, and barbecue foods commonly enjoyed at Fourth of July family gatherings. CEO Troy Gunden explained that these shared experiences make snacking fun and are the perfect representation of what makes Herr's chips special.
In previous years, Herr's has held similar contests, asking snackers to choose flavors inspired by local eateries in Philadelphia. Last year, voters chose Long Hots & Sharp Provolone as the winner, which joined the permanent lineup. This summer, fans will have another opportunity to influence what flavors make it onto Herr's shelves.
The winning chips will be available through the end of the summer and could potentially stay on the shelves longer if they become fan favorites.
