Local 98 IBEW Crew Helps Bring Back Beloved Philly Holiday Tradition
The Wanamaker Christmas Light Show, a Philadelphia institution since the 1950s, is set to return for the 2025 holiday season thanks in part to a significant contribution from IBEW Local 98. The union's three-person crew lent their expertise to assist with the installation of the lighting system, ensuring that this iconic spectacle remains a cherished part of the city's festive landscape.
The Wanamaker Light Show is a spectacular display of over 100,000 LED lights, projected onto a four-story-high velvet curtain in the Grand Court atrium. Accompanied by festive music from the renowned Wanamaker Grand Organ, the show will run every hour on the half hour, starting at 12:30 p.m., with select plays and live performances.
To support this beloved tradition, IBEW Local 98 has also launched a fundraising campaign to help preserve the show for future generations. The public can contribute to the "Save the Light Show" effort by visiting the Philadelphia Visitor Center's website. The organization is now partnering with IBEW Local 98 to ensure that these cherished traditions continue to shine bright.
For decades, the Wanamaker Holiday Light Show has brought magic to Philadelphia, and local union members at IBEW Local 98 have played a vital role in making this happen. As Business Manager Mark Lynch Jr. noted, "Our members pour their hearts into setting up this display – not just as electricians, but as Philadelphians who grew up watching those lights shine. It's an honor to give back to the city we love and make the holidays brighter for everyone."
