John Mayer Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Late Bob Weir: 'I'll Meet You in the Music'

In a poignant message posted on social media late Sunday, guitar legend John Mayer paid tribute to his Grateful Dead bandmate and friend, Bob Weir, who passed away at 78 due to underlying lung issues after a battle with cancer.

Mayer's heartfelt post read: "Okay Bob. I'll do it your way... Fkn' A… Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure. If you say it's not the end, then I'll believe you. I'll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime."

The unlikely pair collaborated on and offstage for over a decade, with Mayer joining Dead and Co., the latest incarnation of the Grateful Dead, after being invited to join John Mayer on "The Late Late Show" where he performed alongside Weir.

As a key member of the band, Mayer toured extensively with Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart, bringing their unique sound to audiences worldwide. The group's final public performance with Weir took place last August in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to celebrate the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary.

Their farewell tour wrapped up in July 2023, but they continued to perform at select residencies until recently. Mayer's tribute serves as a testament to his deep respect and affection for his late friend and fellow musician, Weir.

just saw john mayer's post about bob weir 🙏 it's so beautiful he was more than just a bandmate to me... their music brought people together like nothing else can 💖 i remember seeing dead & co live and feeling this huge sense of community and love 🌈 the way they made you feel like you were part of something bigger than yourself is still magic to me

I'm so saddened by Bob Weir's passing 🎸😢... wait, no I'm not! He was getting old, it's about time he retired from touring. I mean, I loved the Grateful Dead, but all those years of playing the same songs over and over again must've been exhausting. Plus, John Mayer's tribute is super cheesy 🤣... okay, that part doesn't sit right with me. He actually sounds really sincere and heartfelt in that post. I'm still not convinced he was a great guitarist, though 🎸😐.

man that's just so sad 🤕... bob weir was more than just a bandmate to john mayer, it feels like they had this special bond that transcended music, you know? like, when he says 'if you say it's not the end, then i'll believe you'... that's like, deep stuff 💭. it makes me think about how our connections with others can be so much more than just surface level, and sometimes we don't even realize they're there until they're gone. anyway, what a beautiful tribute from john mayer 🎸

I'm still listening to those old Bob Weir & John Mayer jams 🎸💕 I'm so glad John paid such a beautiful tribute to his buddy Bob... it's crazy how fast time flies, one minute he's jamming with Dead & Co, the next he's gone 😢 But you know what's amazing? The music they made together is still giving us chills! I remember seeing them live and just being blown away by their energy & chemistry 🔥 It's not easy losing someone who inspires you like that, but John's post just shows how much Bob meant to him. And let's be real, the Grateful Dead's legacy lives on through all those amazing songs they created 🎶💫

🎸🙏 Bob Weir was the real MVP 🤟♂️. John Mayer was more than just a bandmate, he was like a brother 👫. Their music together is still giving me chills 💥. RIP to an amazing guitarist and even better person ❤️

Wow 😊, I'm still shakin' my head over Bob Weir's passing... it feels like just yesterday he was jammin' with John Mayer on "The Late Late Show" 🎸👍 Interesting how John Mayer decided to pay tribute in such a beautiful and heartfelt way 💕

.. Bob Weir was more than just a bandmate to John Mayer, he was like family 🤝. I mean, can you imagine having the Grateful Dead on stage alongside you? It's like a dream come true for any musician. But what's even more amazing is how John Mayer has always been open about his love and admiration for Weir's music. Their chemistry on stage was undeniable, and it's clear that they shared something special 🎸.

But, you know, as much as I'm celebrating the memory of Bob Weir, I also can't help but think about how different things are now 🤔. The Grateful Dead were always at the forefront of the music scene back in the day, and their live performances were just... wow 😍. It's hard to replicate that kind of energy with today's fast-paced concerts and festivals.

Still, I'm so grateful for John Mayer's heartfelt tribute - it's a beautiful way to keep Weir's memory alive 💕. And who knows? Maybe in some alternate universe, Weir is jamming alongside his favorite musician... 🎶

omg u guys i'm literally shook 😭 I just saw john mayer's post about bob weir and it's giving me all the feels 💔 like they were meant to be in music together forever 🎸 their collab was always fire 🔥 and now we get to see what could've been 🌟 Mayer's tribute is so heartfelt u can tell how much he loved weir 🤗 and i'm low-key dying of envy that i wasn't there for their farewell tour 🎉 60th anniversary performance in sf was lit 🔥 i wonder if they're gonna do a final album or something?! 🎶

I don’t usually comment but I just had to say something about John Mayer’s post 🤗... it's so sweet of him to pay such a heartfelt tribute to Bob Weir. I mean, they did have a pretty interesting history together, didn't they? Like, who would've thought that the guy who's known for his guitar skills would end up jamming with the Dead? But seriously, their music together was always something special, and it's clear that John Mayer has got some serious love for Bob Weir 😊. I think it's really cool that he's choosing to remember him like that – all these years after they last performed together... it just goes to show how much his passing still means to him 🎸

Man 🙏 I'm still in shock about Bob Weir 😱. Growing up listening to the Grateful Dead was like a rite of passage for me 🎸. I remember my dad taking me to those epic outdoor festivals 🌳 and we'd just jam out to "Dark Star" for hours on end 💥. John Mayer's tribute is so touching, it's clear they had a deep bond over music 🎶. I'm gonna miss seeing the Dead and Co. live again, but at least their legacy will live on through all the amazing memories we made 😊. Bob Weir was more than just a musician, he was a piece of history 🕰️. Rest in peace, my friend 🤙♂️

omg just heard about bob weir passing 🙏 i'm so sad he was like the ultimate jam master and john mayer is being super cool by paying tribute to him in such a heartfelt way 💕 idk what's up with the Fkn' A though lol but seriously thanks for sharing this info

Ugh, the news about Bob Weir passing away is super sad 🤕... But can we talk about how cringey it is that John Mayer posted his tribute on social media? I mean, I get it's a heartfelt message, but come on, can't he just have a private memorial or something? And what's with the "Fkn' A" 😂, is that really necessary? Anyway, I'm glad we got to see these two legends jam together one last time... their music will live on forever 🎸

😔 just heard the news about Bob Weir 🎸🙏... so sad that he's gone. I'm really gonna miss hearing those Grateful Dead songs with him in it. John Mayer's tribute is super heartfelt ❤️... it's beautiful how their friendship and love for music brought them together all these years. The way they collaborated on and offstage was pure magic ✨... Mayer's post sums up their connection perfectly - he'll always ride alongside Bob in the music 🚴‍♂️🎸. Weir may be gone, but his legacy lives on through the music 💖

🎸 So what's with this "I'll meet you in the music" shtick? Like, what does that even mean? Is he saying Bob will just magically appear at some concert or something? 🤔 I'm sure it was a heartfelt post and all, but come on John, get real. You're not gonna start performing with a hologram of Bob Weir anytime soon 😂. And btw, has anyone noticed how weirdly specific the lung issues were? Like, underlying lung issues after a battle with cancer? That's just too convenient 🙄. Anyway, I do love that they did one last show in SF to celebrate the Dead's 60th anniversary - it was about time those guys got their due respect 💯.

man... bob weir was like a legend, you know? i remember watching him live with the grateful dead back in the day 🤘... john mayer paying tribute to him like that, it's really beautiful 😊. they were more than just bandmates, they were friends, and that comes through in his words. i love how he says "i'll meet you in the music"... so true 🎵. it's crazy to think about how much history those two dudes shared on stage and off... still gives me chills thinking about it 😊.

man thats so sad 🤕 i feel bad for john mayer he had bob weir like a brother or something and now hes gone 😔 i wonder how mayer is holding up right now its been like 2 years since they last performed together and to think they still have those private jam sessions 🎸👀 i wish bob weir could just appear in some of johns songs or somethin, that wouldve been so cool 💥

Just saw John Mayer pay the sweetest tribute to Bob Weir 🎸❤️. It's crazy how their paths crossed and became such an iconic duo in the music scene. I mean, who would've thought that John Mayer, a superstar in his own right, would find common ground with someone from the Grateful Dead era? Their chemistry was undeniable on stage, and it's beautiful to see how much they respected each other as musicians and friends 🙏. The fact that they kept performing together even after Weir's health took a turn is a testament to their dedication to music and each other 💕. I'm definitely getting goosebumps reading this 💗
