Former Green Beret Jordan Goudreau is facing arrest after a federal judge ordered his detention due to his absence from court. The 49-year-old veteran, who was involved in a failed coup attempt in Venezuela in 2020, had been released on bond after a filmmaker pledged her Manhattan apartment as collateral.
Goudreau's troubles began when filmmaker Jen Gatien detailed how the Green Beret turned abusive and threatened to harm her and others while living with her. The two were previously close, but their relationship soured since the release of Gatien's documentary about Goudreau's failed plot to train a mercenary force in neighboring Colombia.
The plot, which aimed to spark a popular rebellion and remove Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, was exposed by the Associated Press just days before it went ahead. The operation ended with several would-be freedom fighters killed and two of Goudreau's U.S. Special Forces buddies locked away in a Venezuelan prison.
Goudreau had been under investigation for violating the conditions of his pre-trial release when he failed to show up for a hearing on bond. Judge Christopher Tuite issued an arrest warrant after waiting 30 minutes for Goudreau to arrive at the court hearing.
The Green Beret's lawyer, Marissel Descalzo, claimed she had not spoken to him about why he was absent from court. The relationship between Gatien and Goudreau has soured since the release of her documentary, with Gatien accusing him of deceit and financial coercion.
As part of his defense, Goudreau has denied any wrongdoing and blames the CIA and State Department for sabotaging his mission. However, prosecutors say that his actions were in clear violation of his bond conditions.
