‘Keeper’ Review: Osgood Perkins Directs an ‘Impressonistic’ Serial-Killer Movie — Lots of Creepy Atmosphere, Not Much Logic

Oscillating Between Atmosphere and Logic in 'Keeper'

Osgood Perkins' latest endeavor, 'Keeper', is an experimental horror film that leans heavily on atmospheric tension. The opening sequence sets the tone for a movie that seamlessly blends social commentary with supernatural terror, drawing parallels between the serial killer genre and the pitfalls of monogamy.

At its core, 'Keeper' revolves around Liz (Tatiana Maslany), who accompanies her boyfriend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) to his family's luxurious cabin in upstate New York. Their getaway seems idyllic, but it slowly unravels into a descent into madness. The film masterfully crafts an air of unease with its subtle pacing and unsettling sound design.

However, the narrative soon takes a detour from logic, introducing trippy elements that disrupt the flow of the story. Perkins' decision to incorporate unconventional narrative techniques may be meant to mirror the unpredictable nature of serial killers, but it ultimately leads to confusion.

The performances are solid, with Rossif Sutherland delivering a convincing portrayal of Malcolm's brooding intensity. Tatiana Maslany, however, struggles to find her footing as Liz, whose character feels somewhat one-dimensional.

Visually, 'Keeper' shines with Jeremy Cox's cinematography evoking the austere beauty of the woodland setting. The supporting cast adds depth to the narrative, particularly Birkett Turton's portrayal of Darren, Malcolm's cousin and a suspect in the series of gruesome murders.

Despite its atmospheric moments, 'Keeper' falters when it comes to coherent storytelling. Perkins' experimental approach can be both captivating and disorienting, leaving viewers questioning what is real and what is part of Liz's increasingly fragmented psyche.

Ultimately, 'Keeper' feels like an unfinished project – a film that showcases promise but fails to commit to its vision. While the cinematography and performances are commendable, the meandering narrative and lack of logic make it a challenging watch. Fans of experimental horror may find 'Keeper' thought-provoking, but for those seeking a more conventional serial killer thriller, there are better options available.

I'm telling ya, this film is like, super suspicious 🤔. They're trying to pass off that trippy nonsense as some kind of artistic statement, but really it's just an excuse to confuse the audience and make them question what's real. And don't even get me started on Tatiana Maslany's character - she's got all these subtle hints at her backstory, but you can barely notice 'em because they're buried under a mess of weirdness 🤯. I mean, is this really supposed to be some kind of commentary on monogamy or serial killers? It just feels like an excuse to get creative with the narrative and ignore logic altogether 😒. Mark my words, there's more to this film than meets the eye...

I gotta say 🤔, I was really expecting to love this flick, but that twist at the end kinda left me scratching my head 🤯. I mean, Perkins is all about atmosphere and tension, and it's cool how he weaves in those themes with social commentary... but sometimes it feels like he's just throwing a bunch of weirdness at the wall and hoping it sticks 🎨.

And don't get me wrong, Tatiana Maslany is always solid, but Liz just felt kinda one-note to me 😐. I get that she's supposed to be unraveling or something, but it never quite clicked for me. And what's up with that narrative detour? It's like Perkins was trying to be all clever and stuff 🤓.

Still, the cinematography is straight fire 🔥 and the supporting cast is pretty solid. But if you're gonna make a film that's all about atmosphere and tension, don't just phone it in and not put in the work on the storytelling side of things 😐. I mean, fans of experimental horror might dig it, but for everyone else, maybe stick with something a little more... coherent?

omg i loved the atmosphere in this movie 🌑😱 its like u can feel the tension and unease from the get go. Tatiana Maslany is so talented btw 💁‍♀️ but maybe liz could've been fleshed out more? i was kinda lost during those trippy parts 🤯😂 but jerey cox's cinematography is everything 🌲🎥 overall its like u gotta be in the right mindset to watch this one 🎬

Ugh, I'm so done with this movie 🤯. I mean, come on, can't they just stick to a straight narrative? It's like Perkins is trying to be all artistic and stuff, but really he's just confusing the audience. The only thing that kept me engaged was when Darren (Birkett Turton) was on screen - his character added some actual substance to the story! 🤔

And don't even get me started on Liz's "character development"... I mean, what happened? She goes from bland to basic in like 5 minutes. It's all over the place. And Tatiana Maslany can do better than that, fam! 😒

But hey, if you're into trippy horror stuff and don't mind getting lost in a web of weirdness, then I guess 'Keeper' might be for you 🎃. Just don't say I didn't warn you... 😉

You can't separate the people from the art 🎨. The film's flaws lie not in its intent to challenge viewers, but in how it executes its vision 💡.

OMG 🤯 I just watched Keeper 👻 and I'm like totally torn about it 🤔! On one hand, the atmosphere is SO on point 😱 - Osgood Perkins really knows how to build tension 🔩. The cinematography by Jeremy Cox is stunning 🌳 and the cast does a great job 🙌.

But, on the other hand, I'm like "wait what's happening?" 🤯 Perkins' experimental approach can be wild 🌪️ and it's hard for me to follow the story 😩. Liz's character feels kinda flat 💨 and Tatiana Maslany's performance is just okay 🤔.

I get what Perkins was going for with the trippy elements 🎥, but sometimes I felt like I was stuck in a maze 🗺️ trying to keep up with the narrative 😳. The performances are solid 👍, especially Rossif Sutherland and Birkett Turton 💪.

Overall, Keeper is a film that's hard to wrap my head around 🤯. If you're into experimental horror and can handle some confusion 😅, it might be for you. But if you're looking for something more traditional, there are better options out there 👎.

im just not feelin this movie 🤔 atm. i mean, the atmosphere is def on point 👻, but the logic is all over the place 😂. its like they took every creepy horror cliche and mashed them together into one big mess 🤪. dont get me wrong, tatiana maslany is great as usual, but liz feels like a generic protagonist 🙄. and what's up with the trippy narrative? i mean, i get experimental horror, but this just feels like they're trying too hard to be edgy 💀. overall, its a skippable watch imo 😐

I'm so over this whole "found footage" thing... like, I get it, it's supposed to be creepy and stuff, but honestly, it just feels like a lazy way out to me 🙄. And don't even get me started on the whole "narrative detours" thing... it's like the director thought, "You know what would be a great idea? If I took some trippy elements that have no bearing on the plot and just wove them in there!" 🤯

I mean, I guess Tatiana Maslany is talented and all, but her character, Liz, feels so... generic. Like, where's the depth? Where's the development? 🤔 And Rossif Sutherland is actually pretty good, I'll give him that... he brings some much-needed brooding intensity to the table.

But overall, I just don't get why this movie gets so much hype. It's like, it's got some nice moments, but it's all over the place. I mean, if you're gonna do an experimental horror film, commit to it, you know? Don't just phone it in and expect people to be impressed 🤑.

I gotta say, I was really drawn into the eerie atmosphere of this movie at first 🌑️, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like they lost their grip on reality 😳. The way the story starts off all chill and then just goes haywire is kinda like trying to escape a bad dream... you know what you want, but your brain's all 'nah, let's go down this rabbit hole instead' 🤯. Don't get me wrong, the cinematography was straight fire 🔥, but when it comes to the actual plot, I was left feeling lost and confused 😕. Maybe fans of experimental horror will dig it, but for a straightforward serial killer flick, there are way better options out there 🎬.

idk man, i just saw this movie "keeper" & its like... atmopshere for days 🌑🎥 osgood perkins is trying to do something new w/ this experimental horror thingy, but honestly it feels like a mess 🤯 tatiana maslany's character is so basic lol 😴 i get what the director's tryna do w/ the trippy elements & all, but sometimes its like "what's goin on?" 🤔 and then the movie just jumps to some random plot twist that's not even logical 🚫 anywayz, the cinematography is straight fire 🔥 jermey cox does his thang 🎬

I'm still not over the latest flick on 'Keeper' 🎥😐 I get what Osgood Perkins was tryin to do with that atmospheric tension and all, but sometimes less is more, you know? Leavin' some things unsaid can be super unsettling, but when it's too much, it just feels like a mess. The pacing's all over the place for me – one minute it's chillin', next it's trippy and confusing. And don't even get me started on Liz's character 😒 Tatiana Maslany's a genius, but she deserves better than that. The visuals though? 🔥 Jeremy Cox outdid himself with those cinematography skills. And the cast? Solid all around 🤝 My only gripe is that it felt like Perkins was tryin to do too much and ended up losin' focus. Still, if you're into that whole experimental horror vibe, I'd give it a shot 😉

🤔 Interesting how Perkins tries to blur the lines between reality and madness, making the viewer question what's real and what's just Liz's paranoia 😳. The cinematography is straight fire tho 📸, captures that eerie atmosphere perfectly. But yeah, sometimes less is more, and Perkins' experimental approach feels like it's trying too hard to be unique 💥.

omg i gotta say i was really hyped about 'keeper' at first but honestly after watching it i felt so meh 🤔 the atmosphere is super immersive andJeremy Cox's cinematography is stunning but like the plot just kinda...flops 🌊 tatiana maslany's character feels so underdeveloped and rossif sutherland's performance is the only one that's really consistent throughout. Perkins' decision to get all experimental with the narrative might've been cool at first but it just ends up being confusing 🤯 i love when movies push boundaries but sometimes less is more, you know? 👍

Ugh, I'm so over these 'experimental' movies that think they're pushing boundaries just to be edgy 🙄. 'Keeper' is like that, always trying to keep us guessing, but really it's just confusing the heck out of me 😩. And don't even get me started on the pacing – slow and plodding like a snail in the mud. I mean, can't they just stick to a coherent plot for once? It's like Perkins is trying to make us question what's real and what's not, but honestly, it just feels like he's having an identity crisis himself 🤯. And poor Tatiana Maslany, she's stuck playing this one-dimensional character that I couldn't even care about 😐. Overall, 'Keeper' feels like a hot mess of a film – all flash and no substance 💔.

🤔 u no what's up with these new wave horror movies that try to be all artsy? like, i get it, atmosphere is key and all that jazz 🌑, but sometimes less is more, ya feel? 'Keeper' tries too hard to be deep and clever, but ends up just being confusing 🤯. i mean, i loved the cinematography tho 📸, jermey cox outdid himself with those woodland shots 🌲, but tatiana maslany's character was whack, dude 😐. and don't even get me started on the trippy stuff that just felt like a mess 🤮. if they had just stuck to what they knew, i think it would've been a solid watch 👍, but now i'm left feeling all meh 🤷‍♂️

I'm kinda torn about this one 🤔... On one hand, I loved the vibe of 'Keeper' – it was like stepping into a creepy, atmospheric world that felt so real 🌲👻. And let's be real, Tatiana Maslany is always on point 💁‍♀️. But at the same time, I couldn't help but feel like something was off... like, what was happening? Was this part of Liz's crazy mind or actual reality? 😂 I mean, Perkins' experimental approach can be wild, and while it added to the tension, it also made me feel like I needed a flowchart to keep track of everything 🤯. And, dude, Rossif Sutherland is hella convincing as Malcolm, but Liz felt kinda one-note to me 🙅‍♂️. Still, there's something about 'Keeper' that's gonna linger with me... maybe it's the cinematography or just the whole vibe, but I'd def wanna watch it again 👍... with a map 🗺️.

🤔 I gotta say, I loved how 'Keeper' built up this creepy atmosphere from the getgo, it's like you're right there with Liz and Malcolm in that cabin... feeling all uneasy 🌲😓 But then, for me, things just got weird. Like, intentionally weird. I'm not sure if Perkins was going for some kinda meta commentary on how unpredictable serial killers are or what, but for me, it just felt like a bunch of trippy nonsense 🤪💥 That being said, Rossif Sutherland's performance was 🔥 and the cinematography was straight fire 🔴🌃

I gotta say, I'm not feeling this one 😐. The whole "atmospheric tension" vibe is cool and all, but when it starts to get trippy and logic goes out the window, I'm over here like 🤔, "wait, what's going on?". And don't even get me started on Liz's character - she's just kinda...there 🙄. The cinematography is on point tho, Jeremy Cox really knows how to capture that eerie woodland feel 👍. But overall, I think this film is more hype than actual substance 😴. Fans of experimental horror might dig it, but for a traditional serial killer flick, there are way better options out there 🤦‍♀️.

I'm not sure if I'd say its a complete loss 🤔... I mean, the atmosphere Perkins went for is defo creepy 😱 and the way he weaves social commentary into the supernatural elements is pretty clever 🔮. And Rossif Sutherland's performance as Malcolm is seriously chilling 👻. But yeah, I can see how the trippy narrative bits might be confusing 🤯... maybe it's just not my cup of tea? 🍵 Anyway, I'm still gonna give 'Keeper' some points for being bold and trying something new 🔥!
