Korea Box Office: ‘Once We Were Us’ and ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Tussle for Top Spot

South Korea's box office has witnessed a heated competition between two titans this weekend. Romantic drama "Once We Were Us" and sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar: Fire and Ash" have gone head-to-head for the top spot, with "Once We Were Us" taking home the most ticket sales.

Directed by Kim Do-young, who also helmed the 2018 Chinese hit "Us and Them," the Korean remake of the popular film tells the story of two former lovers who unexpectedly cross paths years after their breakup. Starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, the movie has accumulated $6.9 million from over 1 million admissions since its release on December 31.

While "Once We Were Us" raked in more ticket sales with 340,267 admissions between Friday and Sunday, earning $2.3 million, James Cameron's sci-fi epic retained the revenue crown with a weekend gross of $2.6 million from 316,262 admissions. The film has now amassed $48.1 million from over 6 million admissions.

On the other hand, Disney's "Zootopia 2" remained in third place, earning $887,595 over the weekend from 133,639 admissions, bringing its cumulative total to $54.8 million from over 8 million admissions.

Meanwhile, "Choir of God," a Korean musical drama directed by Kim Hyeong-hyeop and starring Park Si-hoo, debuted in fourth place with a gross of $609,305 from 89,857 admissions.

The only animated film holding its ground was "Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight," which rounded out the top five with an additional $441,507 over the weekend from 65,744 admissions. Based on the novel by Ichijo Misaki, the film centers on a girl with anterograde amnesia whose memories reset each morning.

Other notable releases include "Crayon Shinchan the movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers" and "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants."

omg i'm so confused why disney's zootopia 2 cant even dethrone avatar: fire & ash tho 🤯 it's like, disney has been killin' the game for years 🤑 but seriously, i loved choir of god last week it was so emotional 💔 park si-hoo is literally my bias now 🙌 and what's up with koo kyo-hwan and moon ga-young they're just too cute together 😍 anyway, i need to go study for my maths test 2moro 📚

omg u guys i just saw avatar fire & ash w/ my friends 🤩 it was soooo good!! but idk who won the competition thingy... i think once we were us got more people to watch? 🤔 anyway did u know that moon ga-young is like a total idol now in korea? 😍 she's so talented!!! btw what's with all these movies coming out every weekend tho? i feel like i have to choose between watching avengers & zootopia 2 this wknd 🎥💖

I'm lovin' how competitive the K-box office is right now 🤩! You gotta give credit to Kim Do-young for bringin' that remake magic with "Once We Were Us" - it's great to see Korean films gettin' a second chance at life like this 🎥. And can we talk about James Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" for bein' low-key consistent? I mean, 48 million bucks from 6 million admissions is no joke 💸. The fact that Disney's "Zootopia 2" is still holdin' strong in third place isn't too shabby either 🦒. Maybe we can expect some crazy box office battles next weekend 😏.

omg can u believe dis? once we were us is killin it on box office lol, like, who knew korean rom-coms could be so fire 🔥👏 but avatar: fire & ash better watch out cuz that's a lot of ticket sales going down 🚫💸 moon ga-young & koo kyo-hwan are killing the game too 🤩 and btw, dis week's box office is like a never ending anime marathon 🎥📺

idk what's so special about these movies 🤷‍♂️. just another bunch of remakes or sequels 😴. i mean, i love a good romantic drama as much as the next person, but can't we have something fresh and original for once? like, when was the last time we saw a true original k-drama or movie? 🤔. "Once We Were Us" is cute and all, but it's still just another remake of a chinese film 📺. give me something that's gonna blow my mind, you know? 😅

I'm not convinced about these box office numbers... I mean, $6.9 million from 1 million admissions sounds too good to be true 🤑. Where's the source on that? Is it from a reputable box office tracker or just some random website claiming to have the latest figures?

And what's up with "Avatar: Fire and Ash" taking so long to reach its total of $48.1 million? That's a pretty slow burn for a sci-fi epic like that 🤔. Did James Cameron's fanbase really carry it through this weekend?

I'm also curious about the numbers for Disney's animated films... $54.8 million from over 8 million admissions sounds like a lot, but where are these figures coming from? Are they tracking the box office performance of individual theaters or just aggregating data from various sources?

omg i just saw this thread about avatars fire & ash finally beat Once We Were Us 🙌 i feel like avatar has been stuck in 1st place for ages lol but im kinda happy they took the top spot now that once were us is out of the way 💁‍♀️ i do love Koo Kyo-hwan tho he's sooo good at acting 😊

Ugh, another weekend where people are being ripped off by overpriced movie tickets 🤑. I mean, come on, $2.3 million from 340k admissions is a whole lotta cash just for one movie. And what's up with the sci-fi films dominating the box office? Like, aren't we sick of James Cameron yet? 😒 "Avatar: Fire and Ash" has been out for months now and it's still raking in the dough. Meanwhile, people are missing out on original stories like "Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight". I swear, sometimes I wonder if anyone even reads reviews or thinks about the plot before shelling out 20 bucks for a ticket 🤯.

I'm surprised by how well "Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight" held on, even with all these big releases 🤯. I mean, an animated film about a girl with anterograde amnesia is pretty unique, you know? Maybe it's because it's so quirky and offbeat that people are still vibin' to it 😊. I also love how "Once We Were Us" did so well at the box office – Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young are such talented actors! The romance drama thing seems like a winning formula this season 🎥.
