Lake District theatre to be renamed after Victoria Wood and unveil new musical of her songs

A Lake District Theatre Set to Shine Brighter than Ever as it's Renamed After Comedy Legend Victoria Wood

The theatre in Bowness-on-Windermere, which has been a beloved hub of artistic expression, is set to undergo a significant transformation this year. The Old Laundry, run by friends Charlotte Scott and Roger Glossop who knew Wood from their early days working on Talent's premiere at the Sheffield Crucible in 1978, will be officially renamed the Victoria Wood Theatre.

This change comes as the theatre prepares to unveil a brand-new musical featuring some of Wood's most iconic songs. The Fourteen Again show, which has been penned by Tom MacRae – a writer and lyricist known for his work on Everybody's Talking About Jamie – is an exciting new chapter in the theatre's history.

The Victoria Wood Theatre will be one of only a few playhouses in the country named after a female creative, a testament to Wood's enduring legacy. The theatre has already staged several productions inspired by her life and work, including an adaptation of her TV drama Housewife 49.

The renaming of the theatre marks an important milestone for Scott and Glossop, who have been dedicated to preserving Wood's artistic vision for many years. Their efforts have seen the theatre become a hub for comedy and theatrical innovation in the Lake District.

As part of the celebrations, the Victoria Wood Theatre will stage Fourteen Again from May 1st, with a special gala night planned for Wood's birthday on May 19th. This promises to be an unforgettable event that will showcase some of the comedian and playwright's most beloved songs in a whole new light.

Victoria Wood's death in 2016 left a huge void in the world of comedy, but her legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and audiences alike. The renaming of The Old Laundry as the Victoria Wood Theatre is a fitting tribute to this beloved creative, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this special theatre.

I remember when the Lake District was all about the Windermere cruises and the lakes were more like... well, just big holes in the ground πŸ˜‚. But I guess times change, and now it's all about celebrating Victoria Wood 🎭. I mean, who wouldn't want to visit a theatre named after a comedy legend? It's about time someone shone a light on her incredible work.
