Lawsuit accuses Michigan Boy Scouts leader of grooming and sexual abuse, cites systemic failures - Detroit Metro Times

Michigan Boy Scout Troop Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Grooming and Sexual Abuse

A local family has filed a lawsuit against the Michigan affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America, alleging that an adult leader used his position to groom and sexually abuse a minor. The lawsuit also claims that the organization failed to enforce basic safeguards designed to prevent abuse.

According to the complaint, the alleged abuse occurred while the child was participating in Boy Scouts Troop 508 and involved unwanted physical contact, sexually explicit conversations, and exposure to pornographic material. The lawsuit alleges a pattern of grooming behavior that escalated over time, including using one-on-one access to isolate the child and normalize inappropriate behavior.

The organization is accused of failing to properly supervise, train, and monitor adult leaders and not enforcing long-standing youth protection policies. The complaint states that the Boy Scouts of America and its Michigan affiliate failed to prevent abuse despite having written policies designed to protect children.

The lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress, psychological harm, and other injuries, as well as allegations of gross negligence, negligence, and negligent hiring, retention, and supervision.

The case comes after a similar incident was reported in 2022, where Mark Chapman was charged with allegedly sexually assaulting two boys as part of an investigation into sexual abuse involving the Boy Scouts of America. Chapman was sentenced to 12-20 years in prison.

This is the latest in a series of lawsuits filed against the Boy Scouts of America and its affiliates over allegations of child abuse and grooming. The organization has faced widespread criticism for its handling of abuse cases and has implemented several reforms aimed at preventing future abuse.

omg this is so sad πŸ€•, how could someone take advantage of a child like that? the boy scouts org should be held accountable for not stopping him when they knew something was fishy 🐟 they have a lot of responsibility as a organization to keep kids safe and it sounds like they failed miserably πŸ˜”

Ugh, this is just so messed up πŸ€•... like I was reading about some friends' little bro who was in that troop and they're all super shaken now. It's just unbelievable that an adult would use their position to groom a kid, and then the org isn't doing enough to prevent it? My cousin went through something similar with her friend's big sis in another troop... she said the org didn't do squat about it. Anyway, I feel so bad for all these kids who are going through this trauma, and my heart goes out to them πŸ€—. And what really gets me is that the org has implemented some reforms already, but I guess they still need to do more...

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ ugh, another one πŸ™„. can't even walk into a Boy Scout meeting without worrying about getting molested or groomed 🚫. I mean, come on, how hard is it to supervise the adults and make sure they're not using their positions of power to exploit kids? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ apparently, really hard for BSA ⏰. and now we get a lawsuit and another family's kid gets to relive their trauma πŸ’”. I'm not saying the BSA is all bad or that they don't have good people working for them, but... yeah, this is just messed up πŸ€•

🚨 I'm getting so sick of these lawsuite after lawsuit, it's like people keep getting hurt and now they're trying to get somethin back from the orgs πŸ€•. Can't believe all the adults who are supposed to be lookin out for kids doin the oppsite instead... it's just not right. And I feel bad for the parents and family members who have to go through this, it's like they're losin their child all over again. We need better system in place to prevent this kinda stuff from happenin in the first place πŸ’”.

my heart goes out to that poor kid & their family πŸ˜”πŸ€• i can only imagine how scary & traumatic that must be to go through, especially when you trust the people supposed to protect & care for you 🀝 it's just heartbreaking that an adult leader took advantage of someone who was already vulnerable in such a way... the fact that the org didn't enforce basic safeguards & protected the child is just devastating πŸ’” i hope the lawsuit brings some measure of justice & closure to the family, but i also know that healing takes time 🌟

😑 this is disgusting! how can an org with so much good in it let this happen? scouts are supposed to be role models, not predators 🀒 the fact that they failed to supervise & train these adults properly is just appalling πŸ˜’ i mean come on, they had policies in place, they knew better... and now some kid has to suffer because of it πŸ’” my heart goes out to the victim & their family πŸ’•

😞 this is just so heartbreaking, what's going on with these organizations? it's like they're not doing enough to protect our kids πŸ€• the fact that an adult leader was able to take advantage of a child in such a way is just devastating... and the thing is, it's not like this is some isolated incident - there are so many lawsuits against them now, it's like they're just getting more scrutiny πŸ” and honestly, i don't blame people for being skeptical about their claims that they've improved πŸ€” we need to make sure these kids can trust these organizations with our most vulnerable members πŸ‘§πŸ’•

πŸ€• my heart goes out to that little boy who went through this traumatic experience 🌟 it's just heartbreaking to think about an adult taking advantage of his position to do something so cruel and hurtful πŸ˜” the Boy Scouts organization needs to step up their game and make sure these things don't happen in the future πŸ’ͺ they're not doing enough to prevent abuse and it's just devastating for all those kids who have been affected 🌈

ugh this is just another example of how we cant trust the people in power to keep us safe πŸ€• i mean what kinda safeguards can you put in place to stop someone from using their position of authority to hurt kids?? its not about having rules, its about holding people accountable for what they do. and why did it take so long for this to happen?? shouldnt we have seen something like this coming? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
