Man accused of causing deadly crash, shooting into air, and carjacking multiple drivers, HPD says

A senseless chain of events unfolded in Houston yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. According to authorities, a single suspect - identified as 30-year-old Jason Arvin Velasquez - was responsible for a deadly multi-vehicle crash, three carjackings, and multiple collisions that stretched from the Gulf Freeway to downtown.

The incident began at the intersection of I-45 and Broadway, where witnesses described a white SUV careening out of control onto the northbound access road and colliding with several vehicles. The impact triggered a chain reaction of crashes that killed one woman and severely damaged numerous other cars. Rosalind Scallion, who was driving through the area at the time, managed to avoid major damage but witnessed the chaos up close.

"He sped up and clipped my car a little bit, not bad," she recalled. "Then he hit that SUV and then he missed another car, and then he hit the truck and hit the pole." Another witness, Juan Nava, reported that his girlfriend's car was struck in the crash and that when he approached the suspect afterwards, the situation turned violent.

The suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and attempted to cut Nava, before producing a gun and firing shots in an attempt to "get people away". Authorities say Velasquez then went on to carjack multiple drivers at gunpoint, sparking a series of frantic and terrifying encounters.

Before being arrested by a Precinct 1 constable near downtown Houston, Velasquez was suspected of attempting to carjack a third vehicle. The suspect's motives behind the carnage are still unclear, but it's clear that his reckless behavior has left a community shaken and searching for answers.

As investigators continue to unravel the events leading up to yesterday's tragedy, one thing is certain: the streets of Houston are forever changed by the senseless violence and destruction caused by Jason Velasquez.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, what could have triggered someone to go from being a normal person to committing such heinous acts? It's just not something you see every day. The thought of the driver who witnessed the whole thing, Rosalind, having to deal with that chaos up close... it gives me chills ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

It's also making me think about how we can prevent these kinds of incidents from happening in the future. Are there any measures that law enforcement or local governments could take to prevent carjackings and violent outbursts? I'm not sure, but I do know that something needs to be done ๐Ÿค”.

OMG what was he even thinkin?! ๐Ÿคฏ like, multiple carjackings and collisions in one day? And with a knife and gun too?! ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ˜ฑ that's just insane. I can only imagine how scary it must've been for the people involved. The fact that someone could do something so reckless and hurt so many innocent people is just mind-blowing. We need to get to the bottom of this ASAP, like, what triggered him or was he always like this? ๐Ÿค”

Man, this whole thing is just crazy ๐Ÿคฏ... like what's going on with people these days? Can't even drive down the street without someone trying to hurt you or take your car or whatever ๐Ÿ’”. It's so frustrating because you're driving home from work or dropping off the kids and suddenly you're in the middle of this crazy scene, right? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘€ And I feel bad for Rosalind Scallion, she could've totally been hurt if that guy hadn't clipped her car by a little bit ๐Ÿ™. Anyway, hopefully they catch the motive behind it all so we can understand what led to such reckless behavior... this just feels so senseless ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿšจ This whole situation just blows my mind... like what makes someone think they can just speed around, hit people, and then pull a knife? I mean, isn't that just begging for trouble? And those witnesses who said he clipped their cars? Like, what's the point of even driving if you're just gonna let some psycho like this ruin your day. ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿ˜•๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ this is so crazy, i dont think anyone should have to go thru that kinda trauma and loss. like what triggered him to do all this? was he having a bad day or was there something more going on? ๐Ÿค” i feel for the witnesses who had to see all that happen... and the family of the girl who got killed ๐Ÿ’”. it's just so senseless. can't believe some ppl have no empathy or regard for others lives. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ข

I'm just so worried about what happened in Houston yesterday ๐Ÿค•. It's crazy to think that one person could cause so much chaos and destruction. I mean, a multi-vehicle crash is bad enough, but adding carjackings and gunshots to the mix? It's just devastating ๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

And can you imagine being a witness to all that carnage? Rosalind Scallion must have been shaking after what she saw, even if her car was lucky enough to avoid major damage ๐Ÿ™. And poor Juan Nava... trying to intervene and then getting threatened with a knife? That's just not okay.

I think we need to be talking about road safety and mental health here. What led Jason Velasquez down this path? Was he under the influence or struggling with something? We can't keep living in fear of senseless violence like this happening again ๐Ÿค”.

Let's hope that by working together, we can create safer streets and support those affected by this tragedy ๐Ÿ’–.

omg u cannt even imagine wut happened in houston yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ’ฅ it was like something outta a bad movie. 1 guy just goes on a killing spree, carjackin people at gunpoint and then tries to stab ppl ๐Ÿคฏ meanwhile the cops r tryin 2 figure out wht his deal is... i mean wut kind of psycho doens that? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’” i feel bad 4 all those ppl who had 2 witness that trauma ๐Ÿ’€ & can we pls just say a prayer for rosie who dodged the bullet tho? ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿค• I don't know what's going on with that guy, it's like he just lost all control or something... his behavior was completely crazy and put a lot of people in harm's way ๐Ÿšจ. You gotta feel bad for the victims and their families, it's not fair to them at all ๐Ÿ˜”. I'm surprised more people weren't hurt, especially with all those carjackings and whatnot... some things are just too unpredictable ๐Ÿคฏ. Anyway, glad that the cops were able to catch him before he could do any more damage ๐Ÿ’ช. Just a sad day all around ๐Ÿ˜ž.

I cant even believe what happened in Houston yesterday ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. It sounds like a movie or something - carjackings, shootings, and just chaos everywhere. I keep thinking about my old mate who used to live in the city and how he always said it was so vibrant and full of life... now its all just destruction and fear. The guy's motives are still unclear, but that doesnt make any sense to me. In my day, we didnt need cars or fancy technology to get around - we were happy with our trusty old bikes ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And what was wrong with Jason? Had he ever had a moment to reflect on his life and think about how his actions would affect others? It all just seems so... senseless ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿค• The sheer audacity and wanton disregard for human life displayed by Jason Velasquez is simply appalling ๐Ÿšซ. This avoidable chain of events, which could have been prevented with even basic care and caution, resulted in the loss of a life and left countless others shaken ๐Ÿ’”. It's disconcerting to witness how quickly an individual can escalate from a reckless driving incident to a full-blown wave of violent carjackings and gunfire ๐Ÿ”ซ. The root causes behind such aberrant behavior remain obscure, but it's clear that the streets of Houston will be forever scarred by this senseless tragedy ๐Ÿ˜•.

man that dude was straight outta crazy 1๐Ÿคฏ... or maybe he just had a bad day? idk but whoever drives around with a knife in their car should get arrested ASAP, safety first ๐Ÿšจ... think the authorities did good to stop him before things got even worse... hope Rosalind and Juan are ok ๐Ÿ‘

omg I just saw this awesome new video game that's literally so immersive ๐Ÿคฏ I mean have you played "Elyria" yet? It's like, totally mind-blowing ๐Ÿ˜ฎ the graphics are insane and the storyline is so deep... anyway back to this crazy news, what's weird is how some people were like "he just lost control of his car" but then others were like "he was trying to escape something"... I don't know man, it's all pretty confusing ๐Ÿค” maybe someone should write a script about a white SUV with a mind of its own? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿค• It's really disheartening to see how quickly a situation can escalate into chaos like that. I mean, it just highlights the need for better driver education and road safety measures in this country. Those multiple carjackings could've been prevented if only there were more effective strategies in place for de-escalating tense situations like that.

It's also quite telling that Velasquez was able to pull out a knife and a gun within the span of, like, 10 seconds or so - that's just crazy talk. And what really gets me is how we can't even begin to understand his motivations behind all this. Did he have some kind of mental health issue? Was it just a momentary lapse in judgment? We need more research and support for people struggling with these kinds of issues.

Anyway, I hope the community is taking care of themselves during this time and that justice will be served for the victims involved ๐Ÿ’”

Omg, what a crazy day in H-Town ๐Ÿคฏ! I'm still trying to process all that happened on the roads yesterday. A single guy's actions can have such devastating consequences ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. It's like, one wrong move and who knows how many lives are affected? The fact that he had multiple carjackings and tried to hurt people with a knife and gun is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ’”. Can you imagine being in Rosalind Scallion's shoes and witnessing all that chaos? Or Juan Nava, trying to protect his girlfriend's car? It's like, a nightmare come true ๐Ÿ˜จ.

I'm glad the cops were able to catch him before anyone else got hurt, but what's really puzzling is why he did it all. Was he having a bad day? Did he have something on his mind? Whatever the reason, we can't just forgive and forget. We need to make sure our roads are safe for everyone, especially after an incident like this ๐Ÿšซ.

๐Ÿ’” this is just heartbreaking, 30 yrs old and already losing it like that ๐Ÿคฏ, what's going on with our youth these days? they're all about speed & power, not even thinking about the consequences of their actions ๐Ÿ’ฅ, I feel so sorry for Rosalind Scallion who almost got hurt too ๐Ÿ™, carjackings are a huge problem in many cities now, need to find a way to stop this madness ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• this is such a sad and crazy story ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ u gotta feel bad for all those people involved especially the lady who got hurt ๐Ÿ’” i dont no what was goin on in that guy's head but it just goes to show how quickly things can escalate into disaster ๐ŸŒช๏ธ maybe he had some kinda mental breakdown or somethin ๐Ÿคฏ anyways, hopefully he gets the help he needs and its a lesson to everyone else to always stay calm and aware on the road ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿค• man this city is just having the worst week ever. one minute you're cruisin down I-45, next minute there's a white SUV tearin outta control everywhere ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฅ. i was actually driving near that area yesterday and it's crazy to think about how close i came to bein in that car if that guy hadn't clipped me by accident ๐Ÿ˜…. but seriously though, one life lost and multiple people hurt... it's just senseless. the whole city is still shakin after this and i don't blame anyone for bein scared ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿค• This is crazy. Three carjackings? That's just insane. What was he thinking?! ๐Ÿ™„ He basically took control over people's lives in an instant. The fact that he pulled a knife on someone who just saw his girlfriend get hit... no explanation can justify that. And then the gunshots, ugh! It's like he wanted to create chaos. I'm so sorry for Rosalind and Juan, they must be traumatized. This guy needs help ASAP ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ
