Man in Rikers custody dies after being taken to hospital, officials say

A man in custody at Rikers Island's Otis Bantum Correctional Center died on Friday after experiencing a medical episode, according to the Department of Correction. Edwin Ramos, 38, was found unwell by a guard around 12:05am in a bathroom and received immediate aid before being taken to a clinic on-site for further treatment.

Ramos' condition then deteriorated, prompting him to be rushed to a nearby hospital where he sadly passed away. The Legal Aid Society, which represented Ramos, stated that he was expected to take a plea deal just hours earlier and had been looking forward to resolving the matter with the court.

The death has sparked calls for greater transparency from authorities. The Legal Aid Society demanded access to details of Ramos' death be disclosed to his family, loved ones, and counsel, stating that counsel learned about it through media reports and finding this approach "disgraceful" and "unacceptable".

Rikers officials have expressed sympathy for the victim's loved ones, while also vowing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. This incident marks the 13th detainee fatality at Rikers so far this year, exceeding last year's total by more than double.

As the investigation unfolds, Ramos' case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles within the city's correctional system and its impact on those in custody.

omg the rikers island situation is getting worse and worse 🀯 like 13 detentions dying this year already? it's so sad for their families πŸ˜” how can authorities be so un transparent about these things? shouldn't they have access to info about what happened? πŸ’€ especially when you're representing ppl in custody like edwin ramos' legal aid society needs to step up and demand more transparency πŸ‘Š rikers island has been getting a lot of bad press lately and it's high time we make some real changes πŸ”„ the fact that people are dying in custody is just not acceptable πŸ’”

🚨 just saw that another inmate died at Rikers Island πŸ€• it's like, what even is going on over there? 13 fatalities this year already? that's crazy! 🀯 i feel so bad for Edwin Ramos' family and loved ones... he was just trying to get his life together and now... πŸ˜”

i need a big change in the way they handle these cases, you know? more transparency, less secrecy. it's all about accountability πŸ’‘ let's make sure we learn from this tragedy and do better for everyone involved. 🀝

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking, another life lost at Rikers Island 🌹 it's like they're saying we don't value human lives enough... the system's broken and we need real change, not just some empty promises πŸ’” we need transparency and accountability from the start, no more waiting for someone to die before we know what's going on πŸ’― at least now we're talking about this stuff openly πŸ—£οΈ

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this Rikers Island situation 🀯. 13 fatalities already this year is just heartbreaking. The fact that the Legal Aid Society had to find out about Edwin Ramos' death through media reports is totally unacceptable πŸ˜”. It's like, we get it, transparency is key, but not in a way that makes you feel like an afterthought. I mean, can't they just keep the family informed? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The investigation better be thorough because this kinda thing needs to be looked into ASAP.

man... another one πŸ€•. 38 years old and already gone πŸ’€. can't believe he was looking forward to taking a plea deal just hours before his death πŸ˜”. it's not like we didn't know about the issues at Rikers, but still... 13 fatalities this year? that's just crazy 🚨. need more transparency from authorities, for sure πŸ”. the fact that counsel only found out through media reports is just messed up πŸ“°. can't they do better than that? πŸ’”. and it's not like Rikers officials aren't trying to cover their bases, but still... we deserve answers πŸ€”. this whole thing is just a reminder of how broken our justice system is πŸ€•.

man... just can't believe what's happening at rikers πŸ€• that guy was literally supposed to get some help from the court like hours before and now he's gone πŸ˜” it's so unfair. i'm getting really frustrated about all these detentions and deaths, no one should have to go through this πŸ’” we need more transparency and accountability from our authorities, ASAP! 🚨 my heart goes out to edwin's loved ones, they deserve some answers πŸ™

🚨 this is getting out of hand rn. 13 detainees dead at Rikers already this year? it's like they're just waiting for something to go wrong. 🀯 what even is going on behind those prison walls? all that money being thrown around and still we can't guarantee the safety & well-being of these ppl. πŸ€‘ need some real accountability here, not just empty promises from officials πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ
