Man pleads guilty in murder of prominent Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit Neurosurgeon's Killer Pleds Guilty, Ending Trial After Months of Investigation

A shocking turn of events has brought closure to the family of Dr. Devon Hoover, a prominent Detroit neurosurgeon who was found dead in his home last year. Desmond Burks, 35, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday, just two days into jury selection, effectively ending the lengthy trial that had been anticipated for several weeks.

According to authorities, the case began with a police welfare check on April 23, 2023, after Dr. Hoover failed to arrive in Indiana as planned. Officers discovered his body hidden in a third-floor attic crawl space of his home on W. Boston Boulevard near Woodward Avenue. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Dr. Hoover had been shot twice in the back of the head.

The investigation into Dr. Hoover's murder spanned multiple states and countries, involving over 100 hours of video interviews, surveillance footage from 24 locations, and more than 300 pieces of evidence. Authorities coordinated efforts with the US, England, and France to unravel the mystery.

Prosecutors alleged that Burks and Dr. Hoover were involved in an intimate relationship, which played a significant role in the investigation. Digital records, including phone data, text messages, and financial activity, were analyzed by detectives to build a case against Burks.

Burks' decision to plead guilty was unexpected, according to his own attorney, who described it as "a bit of a surprise." However, prosecutors stated that the plea deal spares Dr. Hoover's family from the trauma and emotional toll of a lengthy trial.

Under the agreement, Burks faces 35 to 60 years in prison for the murder conviction, plus an additional five years on a weapons charge. Sentencing is scheduled for February 20. The family of Dr. Hoover expressed relief that a long and difficult trial will not be necessary, allowing them to move forward with closure.

The guilty plea marks the end of a nearly three-year chapter in the investigation, which began with the discovery of Dr. Hoover's body. While it cannot undo his tragic death, the plea guarantees a lengthy prison sentence and brings some measure of justice for his family.

Just great, another psycho gets caught after months of building up suspense. I mean, who needs a trial when you can just plead guilty out of the blue? 🤷‍♂️ It's not like they needed to build a case or anything. The whole thing feels like a setup for some TV drama. And now Desmond Burks is off to the slammer, serving up 35-60 years in prison. That's what I call closure... for Dr. Hoover's family, but still pretty harsh on poor Desmond 🤯

Man... can you believe this guy gets away with murder? 😱 I was watching the trial on live stream, thinking it would drag on forever. But Burks just goes ahead and pleads guilty like that! It's like, what were they even going to find in the last two days of jury selection? 🤷‍♂️ The investigation was so long and involved so many countries... I'm just glad Dr. Hoover's family can finally move on and get some closure. 35-60 years in prison is a pretty harsh sentence, though... justice served, right? 👊

Man... this whole thing is just so sad 🤕. I mean, can you even imagine having to deal with that kind of pain and trauma? Dr. Hoover was such a promising young neurosurgeon, too - all those years of education and training, and then like, cut short in an instant 💔. It's crazy how it turns out his killer was someone he trusted... I guess you never really know people, right? 🤷‍♂️

I'm glad the family can finally get some closure, though - that must be a huge weight off their shoulders 😌. 35-60 years is still a pretty harsh sentence, though... hope Burks serves his time and reflects on what he's done 🙏. Still, at least justice will be served in some small way 💪.

man this is such a huge weight off their shoulders... i can only imagine how hard it must be to deal with all that drama and uncertainty ... 35-60 years in prison is still crazy long tho 😕🤯 at least now the family can finally get some peace of mind and start moving forward 💨

🙏 finally some closure for the Hoover fam 😔 this case has been draggin on for ages gotta feel bad for Burks gettin in a plea deal but 35-60 yrs is still way too much 💯 hope he gets mental health help in there 🤝

I'm not really sure what to think about this whole thing 🤔. On one hand, I feel bad for the family of the poor doctor who got killed 💔. A 35-60 year prison sentence is still a long time, and I guess it's better than nothing ⏰. But on the other hand, I'm kinda wondering why Burks just decided to plead guilty out of nowhere 🤷‍♂️. Was he really that desperate for a deal? And what about his sanity at this point? The guy's been involved in some pretty crazy stuff, if you ask me 😲. Plus, I'm still not convinced that Burks and Dr. Hoover were actually an item or whatever 💁‍♀️. Just seems like a whole lot of suspicious circumstances to me 🤔.

Just got this news about Desmond Burks pleading guilty to murderin' that Detroit neurosurgeon... its like, he was tryna get away with it, but they found all them digital records and video interviews and stuff 🤔. Can't believe how long the trial took, almost three years! Guess it's a good thing his family won't have to go through all that stress now 🙏. The sentence is pretty harsh too, 35-60 years in prison... hope he regrets what he did 😬. Justice is served, I guess? 💯
