Maresca tells Chelsea to grow up after Delap's 'stupid red card' in wild win over Wolves

Chelsea's Premier League hopes took an unusual turn at Molineux Stadium as Enzo Maresca was left frustrated with his team's display. The Blues were three goals up at halftime, but the visitors staged a stunning comeback, scoring three goals in the second half to earn a 4-3 win.

Maresca's side had dominated the first half, with Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, Estêvão, and Jamie Gittens all finding the back of the net. However, as the scoreline stood at 3-1, it seemed as though Wolves were out of luck. But they responded by displaying a gritty display of spirit, quality, and physicality that left Chelsea reeling.

The real game-changer came in the final minutes, when David Møller Wolfe's equalizer was followed by Hwang Hee-chan's winner to seal the three points for Wolves. The visitors' late collapse raised questions about their young squad's maturity, particularly after Liam Delap's "very stupid red card" sparked a dramatic turnaround.

Maresca was scathing in his assessment of Delap's actions, which led to the dismissal of the 22-year-old striker with seven minutes left on the clock. The Blues boss admitted that his team had panicked, and that they need to grow up and learn from their mistakes.

"This is one of the best groups of players I have ever worked with," Wolves head coach Vítor Pereira said in a post-match interview. "We have the spirit, willpower, and character to change our season around."

The result marked a first win for Wolves this season, and a rare taste of victory for Maresca's team who now hold their own with bottom-placed teams like Burnley.

Chelsea are still on course for a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff City, but they have lost the services of Delap for Saturday's game against Tottenham.

😐 I mean, what's up with Chelsea? They were absolutely destroyed in that second half... 3 goals down and they just gave it away 🤦‍♂️. Wolves, on the other hand, showed some real grit and determination. Those guys from Molineux are like a different team when they want to be 😄. And that red card by Delap? Yeah, no kidding, what was he thinking? 🙄. I think Maresca's team had it in the bag after going 3-1 up but Wolves just refused to give up 💪. It's interesting to see how this season is shaping up for Wolves now... they're definitely not the joke of the league anymore 😎

OMG 🤯 Wolves' comeback was INSANE!!! 🙌 I mean, 3-1 down and then a total meltdown from Chelsea, it's like they just checked out 😴. And that Liam Delap red card? 🤦‍♂️ Maresca is right, his team needs to grow up, stat! 💪

But kudos to Wolves for not giving up 🔥, they showed so much heart and grit in the second half. It's great to see them beating a top-tier team like Chelsea on their home turf 🏠. And that Vítor Pereira is just the coolest 😎, he really believes in his team's spirit and willpower.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have some major concerns about their young squad 💔, especially with Delap out for Saturday's game against Tottenham. They need to figure it out ASAP or else they'll be left behind 🚀.

I'm loving this comeback win for Wolves though! 🎉 It's a big confidence booster for the team and their coach. Bring on the next match! 💥

I'm so down on Wolves for winning that one... I mean, yeah I know it was a crazy comeback and all that 🤯. But come on, Chelsea was way up by 3 goals at halftime - like what did they expect? 🙄 And now Delap gets a "very stupid red card" and costs them the game? Yeah, that's just not fair 😒.

And I gotta say, I'm loving all this drama about Wolves' squad maturity... like, yeah maybe they're young and need to learn from their mistakes, but that's what makes life interesting, right? 🤷‍♂️. Can't wait for the next game where Wolves get destroyed 5-0 😅.

🤔 I dont get why chelsea was so easy to beat lol, 3 goals in the first half? thats crazy! 🤯 what did wolves do to change the game tho? was it just delaps stupid red card that made them wanna fight back? and whats up with chelseas defense, cant they even keep a clean sheet? 😂 also i wonder how burnley is doing now, r they still last in the league? 🤔

OMG, what an absolute nail-biter that was! 😲 Wolves totally turned it around and proved everyone wrong! I mean, 3-1 down and they come back to win 4-3? That's mental! 🤯 Maresca's team must be so proud of them for showing such heart and grit. And that Delap red card was just ridiculous... 😂 Liam, what were you thinking?! 🙄 I'm loving the spirit of Wolves right now - they're a team on the rise! 🔥 The fact that they're beating teams like Burnley and giving Chelsea a hard time is no joke. Møller Wolfe's winner was pure class! 👏

Man... that was a wild match! 🤯 I've been following Chelsea for ages and it's crazy how they got taken down by Wolves like that. They were up 3-1 at halftime and looked solid, but then those Wolves players just stepped it up a notch. That equalizer from David Møller Wolfe was huge, and then Hwang Hee-chan scoring the winner... I don't know what to say! 😂

And Delap's red card? Come on, Liam! You can't afford to get sent off like that in a big game. It's not just about you, it's about your teammates and the team as a whole. Maresca's right, they need to learn from their mistakes and grow up.

But I gotta give credit to Wolves - they showed some serious grit and determination out there. They've been struggling all season and this win was huge for them. Now they're looking at Burnley like they're the new kids on the block... 💪

I'm telling you, Wolves just showed they've got more depth than people gave 'em credit for! 3-1 down and they still find a way to come back? That's some serious squad spirit 💪🏽🔥. And yeah, that red card was a total brain fade from Delap 🙄. It's gonna be interesting to see how Maresca's team grows from this... I mean, it's not like they're gonna magically turn into a top 4 team or anything 😂 but they've definitely got some fight in 'em. The thing is, can they keep that energy going throughout the season? Only time will tell 🔮💔

I'm loving how Wolves just went and snatched that win from under Chelsea's nose 🤯! Those youngsters really showed some heart and grit out there, especially after going 3-1 down at halftime. I mean, who expects to turn it around like that? 💥 It just goes to show that football's full of surprises.

And yeah, that red card was a major turning point - what a mistake by Delap 🤦‍♂️! Wolves need to work on their composure and not let emotions get the better of them. But overall, it's all good for the underdog team - they're suddenly right back in the mix with those bottom-placed teams 😏.

I'm curious to see how this season unfolds for both teams now... Chelsea's still got some momentum, but Wolves are showing they can hang in there too 👀

Ugh, I don't usually comment but... I'm still trying to wrap my head around that comeback by Wolves 🤯. Three goals in the second half is just insane! And what was up with Delap's red card? 😩 I mean, I get it, he lost his cool, but a 10-minute ban? That's harsh.

I don't think Chelsea should be too hard on themselves though, they were still leading 3-1 at halftime 🙄. But yeah, Wolves definitely showed some grit and determination to come back from that deficit. It'll be interesting to see how Maresca's team responds next game 👀.

🤔 I mean, Wolves just came from being 3 goals down to winning the game? That's insane! 🚀 Maresca's got to be questioning his tactics, though - a team that can't even hold onto a 3-goal lead at halftime is gonna struggle all season long. And what's with the "spirit, willpower, and character" speech from Vítor Pereira? Is that just a load of PR fluff? 🙄 The fact that they only won this game because one of their players got sent off is not something to be proud of...
