Meet the Collector: Thomas S. Kaplan On Auctioning His First Rembrandt

Thomas S. Kaplan, billionaire investor and CEO of Electrum Group, is set to auction off his first Rembrandt painting, a rare drawing titled "Young Lion Resting", at Sotheby's Master Works on Paper from Five Centuries sale in February. The estimated value of the work is $20 million, with proceeds going towards funding an endowment for Panthera, a global wild cat conservation organization co-founded by Kaplan.

A lifelong commitment to art and animals, Kaplan has amassed one of the world's most important private collections of Rembrandt and Dutch Golden Age works, comprising over 220 paintings and drawings. The collection, known as the Leiden Collection, is not kept at home but functions like a "lending library," circulating through museum loans and exhibitions worldwide to make them accessible to a broad public.

Kaplan's passion for art was sparked at six years old when his mother took him to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He fell in love with Rembrandt, visiting the Met repeatedly and asking his mother to take him back to see more of his work. This early encounter set the stage for a lifelong commitment to collecting Dutch Golden Age artworks.

Over two decades, Kaplan has acquired about half of the Rembrandts still in private hands, including 17 paintings by the artist. He also owns two Rembrandt drawings, the most important being "Young Lion Resting". The drawing, which carries a high estimate, was purchased by Kaplan and his wife Daphne through a dealer with a painting by Gerrit Dou, another pupil of Rembrandt.

Kaplan's interests extend beyond art to Italian design, particularly the Torinese school and Carlo Mollino. He has made record-breaking purchases, including a Mollino table from 1949, which caught the attention of Bruno Bischofberger, a legendary collector.

The sale of "Young Lion Resting" will not only raise funds for Panthera but also serve as an opportunity to amplify its mission. Kaplan's commitment to wildlife conservation began early, with a childhood encounter that sparked his dream of working in wild cat conservation.

In an exclusive conversation, Kaplan shared insights into his collecting journey, which was influenced by a serendipitous chain of encounters. He recalled how Sir Norman Rosenthal introduced him to the idea of collecting art and helped him acquire his first purchase, a painting by Gerrit Dou.

Throughout our conversation, Kaplan used photographs of majestic Arabian leopards as background, highlighting Panthera's work in conservation across dozens of countries. The organization is currently leading a breeding and reintroduction program for big cats in Saudi Arabia, with the goal of restoring a fully functioning ecosystem before reintroducing the leopard at the top of the food chain.

Kaplan's passion for art is rooted in its ability to evoke beauty and liberate generations of artists. He believes that Rembrandt's legacy lies in how he broke with classical conventions of beauty, finding it in what others considered ugly – what was real. This idea became the theme of his first exhibition in Paris, when the collection was revealed publicly for the first time.

As the Leiden Collection continues to grow and evolve, Kaplan is open to different models for its governance but emphasizes that any framework must ensure the collection's mission is preserved. The long-term future of the collection remains an open question, with several possibilities under consideration.

the fact that kaplan is selling his first rembrandt is kinda crazy 🀯 i mean, who gets to own a masterpiece and then decides to let it go after spending years collecting it? he's basically making a sacrifice for a good cause, which is awesome πŸ’• my thing about the leiden collection is that it's like a library or something – it's not just about him having cool art, but also about sharing it with everyone. i can see why he'd be open to different models for governance, though – it's gotta be tough balancing his passion for art with making sure it stays true to its mission πŸ€”

just wow 🀯 i mean what an amazing thing to happen to the art world! thomas s. kaplan is literally a legend in his own right and it's so cool that he's using his wealth and influence to support a great cause like panthera πŸ―πŸ’š i've always been fascinated by rembrandt's work and it's crazy to think about how kaplan has amassed such an incredible collection over the years πŸ’₯ and it's not just about the art itself, but also the fact that he's making these works accessible to people all over the world 🌎 can't wait to see what the future holds for the leiden collection πŸ€”

🎨 $20 million is a crazy price for a drawing, right? 🀯 but I guess if you're gonna auction off your first Rembrandt painting and put all that cash into Panthera then it's worth it πŸ’š. Kaplan sounds like a super passionate guy who loves art and animals, and his collection is insane 🀩 I mean 220 paintings and drawings of Rembrandt? That's some serious dedication πŸ’―. The fact that he's making the collection accessible to museums and exhibitions worldwide is awesome too 🌎.

πŸ€” I'm not really sure why rich guys have to auction off their fancy art all the time. Like, can't they just keep it in a private museum and let people come visit? But I guess if it's for a good cause like this Rembrandt drawing going towards wild cat conservation πŸ―πŸ’š

πŸ€” This auction is super interesting! I think it's awesome that Thomas S. Kaplan is sharing his passion for art and wild cats through this sale. 🌟 I've always loved Rembrandt's work, he's like a master of capturing human emotions and stories. The fact that "Young Lion Resting" has been in Kaplan's collection for years already shows how much value we can place on these pieces πŸ’Ž

I also love how the auction is supporting Panthera's conservation efforts πŸ―πŸ’š It's amazing to see rich collectors using their influence for good. We should be more like them, don't you think? πŸ€— The idea that art can evoke beauty and liberate generations of artists is something I really appreciate 🎨

One thing that did strike me was how rare this drawing actually is... 17 paintings by Rembrandt in private hands is crazy! πŸ’₯ And the story behind "Young Lion Resting" being sold at auction is super intriguing. Fingers crossed it raises a ton of money for Panthera and helps them achieve their goals 🀞

You know what's amazing? A billionaire investor like Thomas S. Kaplan using his wealth to support wildlife conservation through art sales πŸŒŸπŸ’š. It's not just about the art itself, but also about creating a platform for organizations like Panthera to make a real difference in protecting wild cats worldwide 🦁🌍.

It's great that the Leiden Collection is being used as a "lending library" to bring Rembrandt and Dutch Golden Age works to museums and exhibitions around the globe 🎨πŸ‘₯. Not only does this increase access to art, but it also helps to educate people about the importance of conservation efforts 🌟.

As someone who's passionate about both art and animals, Kaplan's commitment is really inspiring πŸ’•. It just goes to show that when we use our resources in a thoughtful and intentional way, we can make a real impact on the world ❀️. Can't wait to see what other amazing things he has up his sleeve πŸ€”!

So the rich guy Thomas S. Kaplan is selling his super rare Rembrandt painting "Young Lion Resting" and it's gonna go for like $20 million πŸ’ΈπŸŽ¨. I'm kinda curious why he's doing this tho? Like, is he just trying to make some cash or is there something more to it? πŸ€”

I mean, on one hand, it's awesome that the proceeds from the sale are gonna go towards funding Panthera's wild cat conservation org πŸ―πŸ’š. It's definitely a great way for Kaplan to give back and support a good cause. But on the other hand, isn't he just selling a piece of art that's basically priceless? Like, it's not like he can just replace it with another Rembrandt or something πŸ˜‚.

And what's up with his collection tho? He's got over 220 paintings and drawings by Rembrandt, which is insane πŸ’₯. I guess it's cool that he's trying to make them accessible to the public through museum loans and exhibitions, but at the same time, it feels like a lot of pressure on him to keep everything running smoothly 🀝.

I also think it's kinda weird that he's been collecting art for like, half his life or something 🀯. Like, did he just wake up one day and decide "you know what, I'm gonna start collecting Rembrandts"? πŸ˜‚ Or was there some more serious art aficionado influence in his life? Idk, but it's definitely interesting to think about how someone like Kaplan got into the whole art thing 🎭.

πŸŽ¨πŸ’• omg this is amazing!!! i'm literally swooning over thomas kaplan's story 🀩 he's not only a billionaire but also a total art and animal lover πŸ’– and it's so cool that he's using his collection to fund conservation efforts for wild cats 🐯🌍 the fact that he has this incredible leiden collection is already a win in itself, but now he gets to share it with the world through exhibitions and loans 🎭 and i love how he talks about rembrandt's legacy breaking free from traditional beauty standards πŸ’« it's all so inspiring! 😊

🀩 This auction is like a dream come true! I mean, can you believe someone who loves art & wild cats so much gets to sell a Rembrandt drawing for $20 million? πŸ’Έ It's not just about the cash tho - it's about supporting Panthera and helping wild cat conservation worldwide 🐯❀️. Kaplan's passion is super inspiring, from collecting Dutch Golden Age artworks at 6 yrs old (who knew?) to sharing his love of art & animals with everyone! 😊 I'm all about the Leiden Collection being like a "lending library" so more people can enjoy it πŸ“šπŸŽ¨. Can't wait to see which model for governance Kaplan will choose - whatever it is, I'm sure he'll do everything right πŸ˜‰

can you believe this billionaire is actually selling one of his super rare Rembrandt paintings?! 🀯 $20 million is a lot, but I think it's cool that the money goes to Panthera for their wild cat conservation org πŸΎπŸ’š. I've been learning about Rembrandt in my art history class and I'm obsessed with how he broke away from traditional beauty standards – it's so inspiring! πŸ’– I wonder if Kaplan got his collection from the Met like when his mom took him there at 6 years old? That sounds like an amazing story πŸŽ¨πŸ‘«. The fact that his passion for art and animals has led to such incredible conservation work is just wow 😍

πŸ€” This auction is gonna be lit πŸš€! I mean, 20 million bucks for a Rembrandt drawing? That's crazy talk πŸ’Έ. But what really gets me excited is that all those funds are going to Panthera 🐯. As someone who loves animals, it's amazing to see billionaires like Kaplan using their wealth to make a real difference in the world.

I'm also loving how this auction is more than just a art piece sale - it's an opportunity for the general public to access these incredible works of art 🎨. The idea of the Leiden Collection being like a "lending library" is genius πŸ’‘. I wish there were more people out there who thought like Kaplan, where art and conservation go hand in hand 🌿.

One thing that's got me curious, though - what happens to the collection after this auction? Will it be passed on to future generations or will it stay with the Leiden Collection forever? That's a question I'd love to see answered πŸ’.

🎨 so its like Kaplan was only 6 years old when he fell in love with Rembrandt whoa what a cool kid πŸ˜‚ and now hes got over 220 paintings and drawings of him which is insane I mean i no they say knowledge is power but for some ppl it seems like having a sick art collection is the ultimate goal lol anyway gotta give credit to Kaplan for using his $$$ to help out Panthera and making more wild cat conservation awareness πŸ―πŸ’š

omg $20 million is crazy πŸ€‘, like who else can afford to buy a rembrandt drawing?? πŸ˜‚ Kaplan's passion for art and animals is so inspiring, and it's awesome that he's supporting Panthera πŸ―πŸ’š I wonder how many people will get to see the "Young Lion Resting" painting in person after it sells... hopefully it'll go to a museum or a super cool private collection πŸ€”
