Meta is closing down its VR meeting rooms as part of its wider cull

Meta to Shut Down Virtual Reality Meeting Spaces as Part of Metaverse Restructuring Efforts

In a move that highlights the company's shifting priorities, Meta has announced its decision to discontinue the standalone Workrooms app on February 16, 2026. The virtual reality platform was launched with the intention of providing immersive meeting spaces for teams, but according to the company, its Horizon platform has evolved sufficiently to support a wide range of productivity apps and tools.

This move comes as part of Meta's broader efforts to restructure its metaverse ambitions. In recent months, the company has slashed spending on its reality labs division, resulting in over 1,000 layoffs and the closure of three VR studios. According to reports, Reality Labs has lost more than $70 billion since 2021.

As a result, Meta is now diverting resources from the metaverse towards other areas, such as wearables. The company's AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses are set to receive increased investment. Additionally, Horizon managed services โ€“ a subscription service that helps organizations manage their Quest headsets โ€“ will also be discontinued on February 16.

Users of the Workrooms app have been given notice that they will no longer be able to access the platform or retrieve any data stored within it starting on February 16. However, Meta has offered an exception, allowing users to download their data if needed before the end of the month.

omg u guys I cant believe meta is shutting down workrooms lol i mean its not like its a super popular thing but still ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ what's up with them diverting resources from metaverse 2 wearables tho? AI ray ban smart glasses are kinda cool i guess ๐Ÿ“š idk wut's the point of those but hey at least they'll b investin in somethin ๐Ÿค‘ & horizon managed services is pretty lame tbh. u can't even use those now lol its like meta's tryna simplify things or smthn

๐Ÿค” so meta is literally killing off one of its earliest and most ambitious projects just as the metaverse is getting more mainstream... i feel like this makes sense though, they gotta cut costs somewhere and with the horizon platform being able to handle way more apps now, it's not surprising they're focusing on that instead. but what about all the ppl who are gonna lose their jobs? ๐Ÿค• and what happens to workrooms data after the 16th? is it just gonna be a big ol' digital graveyard or are they planning on doing something with it ๐Ÿค‘

Ugh, this is so typical of Meta ๐Ÿคฏ... can't they just make up their minds? One day it's Workrooms, the next it's Horizon - what even is the point anymore? ๐Ÿค” They're basically giving up on the whole VR thing and moving to wearables. I mean, who needs virtual meetings when you've got smart glasses, right? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's all about diversifying their portfolio, but at what cost? The user experience is suffering and it's just going to lead to more frustration for people like me who actually use these platforms...

ugh this is like when you're watching your favorite show and the network decides to cancel it ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ’” can't believe meta's shutting down workrooms app... i mean i get it they've got bigger plans for horizon, but what about all the teams that relied on it? ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ’ป anyway, kinda sad to see a whole platform go ๐Ÿ’” but hey at least meta's moving on to other things like those ray-ban smart glasses ๐Ÿ‘“๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ hope they pay off ๐Ÿค‘

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm not too worried about this lol. I mean, I know some people are gonna be like "what's the point?" but think of it this way... Meta is trying out a new strategy and prioritizing other areas that might actually work out better for them. Like, have you seen those Ray-Ban smart glasses? ๐Ÿค” They're so cool! And Horizon has already come a long way, right? I mean, it's not perfect, but it's still improving. Plus, Meta is being pretty fair by giving users a chance to download their data before it gets shut down. That's actually super considerate of them ๐Ÿ˜Š. I think this just means they're trying to streamline things and make the most of their resources. And hey, who knows? Maybe one day we'll have even better VR options ๐Ÿคž!

๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ป Why would you wanna shut down a VR meeting space? ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ธ Are they worried people will just have too much fun in virtual meetings and forget about actual ones? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ฌ[GIF: Virtual Meeting Madness](https://giphy.com/gifs/meeting-virtual-madness-6xX0e9kq5LwUo) ๐ŸŽฎ

can't believe meta is shutting down workrooms ๐Ÿค• what's up with that? just a few years ago they were all about revolutionizing remote meetings and now it's like they're giving up on that whole metaverse thing ๐Ÿšซ i mean, i get it, things change and priorities shift but 1k layoffs is still crazy ๐Ÿ’ธ and the data for workrooms users is like, what are they gonna do with all that? it's just another example of how fast tech companies can pivot and leave their old ideas in the dust ๐Ÿ‘‹

idk why meta's killin off workrooms app ๐Ÿค” i mean its kinda been a thing for like two years now and people seemed to be usin it... dont get me wrong horizon's got its own things goin on but cant they just let workrooms live its not like its burnin thru cash or somethin ๐Ÿ˜

ugh, think about all those people who invested time and money into workrooms just to have it get pulled away from them like that ๐Ÿค• meta's basically saying "we're done with this metaverse thing" and now they're dumping all their resources on wearables... it's so weird. i mean, i kinda remember when the idea of virtual reality was gonna change everything, but honestly, it feels like we've been stuck in this limbo for years ๐Ÿคช

I'm kinda surprised by this move ๐Ÿค”. I mean, VR meeting spaces were already a bit niche, but still... It makes sense that they're shifting focus to wearables and AI, though - those are areas where tech is moving really fast ๐Ÿš€. And $70 billion loss is crazy ๐Ÿ’ธ. But, on the other hand, it's not like Workrooms was a huge hit or anything ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what comes next ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ...

u gotta feel for meta, right? ๐Ÿค” they were all in on this metaverse thing and now it's like they're scaling back. i mean, who needs VR meeting spaces when u can just use regular ol' video conferencing apps, lol?

but seriously, it's like they realized the whole metaverse thing is still a ways off from becoming a reality ๐Ÿš€. all that investment in reality labs and now they're like "meh, we need to pivot". i'm not mad or anything, but it's just another example of how things don't always go as planned.

anyway, at least their wearables are getting some love ๐Ÿ‘•. those AI-powered smart glasses might actually be pretty cool. fingers crossed they can make a success out of that.

๐Ÿคฏ I'm so shocked! Who would've thought that VR meeting spaces weren't gonna cut it for Meta? ๐Ÿค” They must be feeling the pressure from other productivity apps and tools that can do more than just virtual reality meetings ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ’ป. The fact that they're cutting back on their Reality Labs division is crazy, I mean $70 billion in losses since 2021 is a lot ๐Ÿ’ธ. It's like they're saying VR isn't the future, but AI-powered wearables are ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘“. Don't get me wrong, those smart glasses sound cool, but can we talk about how sad it is that Metaverse plans are being put on hold? ๐Ÿ˜”

OMG, like who needs VR meetings anymore? Just use Zoom and you're good to go ๐Ÿคฃ! I mean, I'm not saying the Workrooms app was a total failure, but $70 billion loss is just crazy talk ๐Ÿ’ธ. Maybe Mark Zuckerberg's trying to focus on his real passion โ€“ collecting vintage ray-ban glasses ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ? Anyway, I hope users can get their data before it's too late, and who knows, maybe they'll all start meeting in person again and get some fresh air โ˜€๏ธ!

I'm so down for this ๐Ÿ’ธ! I mean, who needs VR meeting spaces anyway? It's just another way people can procrastinate and avoid actual work ๐Ÿ˜‚. And let's be real, Horizon is basically a social platform now โ€“ it's all about connecting with friends and not doing anything productive ๐Ÿคช.

But at the same time... I kinda miss Workrooms ๐Ÿค”. I mean, it was actually pretty cool having virtual whiteboards and stuff in meetings ๐Ÿ’ก. Maybe Meta just wasn't thinking it through? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And on the other hand... who needs more resources for the metaverse when we're already drowning in them? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘€ It's like, priorities, people! Wearables and AI-powered glasses are where it's at โ€“ that's where the future is ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

๐Ÿ˜” I feel for all those teams who were really using Workrooms... ๐Ÿค• They must be thinking about how they're gonna find new ways to have virtual meetups without it ๐Ÿ’ก Maybe they can explore other VR platforms? ๐Ÿค But honestly, I'm a bit surprised - I thought Meta was all about making the metaverse happen ๐Ÿš€. Guess you can't always make it work ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. Can be tough to adapt to change... ๐Ÿ’”

I'm kinda surprised about this, I mean Workrooms was a pretty cool tool for remote teams. It's not like they're getting rid of it because it didn't work, but 'cause Horizon is all grown up now and can handle more things ๐Ÿค”. But at the same time, you gotta feel for Reality Labs โ€“ 70 billion lost? That's a lot of cash ๐Ÿ’ธ. I hope Meta finds its groove with wearables and AI stuff; if they do, maybe we'll see some new innovations come outta it ๐Ÿš€. Still, it's gonna be sad to see Workrooms go ๐Ÿ˜”.

come on ๐Ÿ™„ meta's getting outta the vr meeting space thingy... it makes total sense tho ๐Ÿค”, horizon's got all the productivity apps covered now. they can't keep throwing money at something that ain't makin' it ๐Ÿค‘. and yeah, reality labs is a total loss ๐Ÿ˜‚ - 70 billion? ๐Ÿคฏ what were they thinkin'? anyway, ray-ban smart glasses are gonna be fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ... who needs vr meetings when you got virtual try-on ๐Ÿคณโ€โ™€๏ธ?

๐Ÿค” So they're shutting down Workrooms and just gonna stick with Horizon? Like what's wrong with both? ๐Ÿšฎ I need some more info on why they're choosing one over the other. Is it cause Horizon has better compatibility or something? ๐Ÿ‘€ And $70 billion lost on Reality Labs already... that's a lot of cash ๐Ÿ’ธ Can we get some insight into how this restructuring thing is gonna affect their wearables and AI investments? ๐Ÿค–
