Microsoft makes Zork I, II, and III open source under MIT License

Microsoft has opened up the source code for three classic text-based adventure games: Zork I, II, and III. This move comes after a collaborative effort between Microsoft's Open Source Programs Office and digital archivist Jason Scott to make these games freely available under the MIT License.

The decision to release the source code marks an end to a long-standing issue surrounding access to the original Zork code. Jason Scott had uploaded the game's source code to GitHub in 2019, but the licensing situation was unclear, leaving room for potential takedowns by Activision or Microsoft. That uncertainty is now a thing of the past.

Microsoft owns the intellectual property rights to the Zork franchise due to its acquisition of Activision in 2022. However, the company has chosen not to open up more proprietary elements, such as commercial packaging and marketing materials. Instead, it has focused on preserving the games' source code for public access.

The open-sourcing of these classic games is seen as a significant move by Microsoft, with Open Source Programs Office Director Stacy Haffner stating that they are "contributing directly to history." The company's contribution involves submitting upstream pull requests to historical source repositories, formally documenting the grant and adding a clear MIT License.

omg u guyz! ๐Ÿคฏ this is like the best news ever!! microsoft making zork I, II & III open-source is literally a dream come true for retro gamers like me!!! ๐ŸŽฎ i mean who doesn't love those old school text-based adventures? it's crazy that jason scott already uploaded them to github in 2019 but the licensing situation was all hazy. glad they finally cleared that up and made the source code available under the mit license now we can all tinker with the code and create new mods & stuff ๐Ÿค–

i'm also super stoked about microsoft's commitment to preserving these games for public access. it's amazing how much love they're putting into this project, from formal documentation to adding clear licenses. i think this is a huge win for retro gaming enthusiasts like us who just want to relive those nostalgic moments ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm stoked that Microsoft is making these classic text-based adventure games freely available under the MIT License ๐Ÿคฉ. It's amazing how much of a difference this move will make for retro gaming enthusiasts and historians alike! I mean, who wouldn't want to dive into the world of Zork and see how it was originally coded? It's pretty cool that Jason Scott had already uploaded the source code to GitHub in 2019, but now we can all access it without any worries about licensing issues. This is a huge win for open-source and retro gaming communities ๐ŸŽฎ. I'm sure this will inspire more people to explore and appreciate the history of gaming.

I'm stoked that MS is finally making these old-school Zork games available for us to tinker with ๐Ÿคฉ. I mean, who doesn't love a good text-based adventure game from the 80s? But seriously, it's about time someone made this happen. All those years of uncertainty over the licensing and whatnot was pretty frustrating. And now that Microsoft owns the franchise, they're being pretty cool about it too ๐Ÿ˜Š. I'm curious to see what kind of awesome mods and patches people come up with using the source code. It's gonna be wild! ๐Ÿคฏ

๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ป just think about it we can play zork for free now because of microsoft ๐Ÿ™Œ no more worries about the code ๐Ÿ‘€ they're being super cool about sharing it ๐Ÿ’• also good that jason scott did his thing uploading it to github in 2019 ๐Ÿค– next thing you know we'll have source codes for other old games too ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿค– I'm so stoked about this move by Microsoft ๐Ÿ™Œ! It's amazing to see them take control of their IP rights and make these classic games freely available to the public ๐ŸŽฎ. I mean, think about it, we're talking about Zork here - one of the pioneering games that helped shape the whole interactive fiction genre. To have access to its source code is a game-changer (no pun intended) for gamers, developers, and historians alike ๐Ÿ”“.

It's also super cool to see Microsoft working with Jason Scott on this project ๐Ÿ’ป. I've got nothing but respect for his dedication to preserving gaming history ๐Ÿ™. And I gotta say, the MIT License is a great choice - it's like they're saying 'hey world, we trust you guys' ๐Ÿค.

This move also gets me thinking about the importance of open-sourcing in the gaming industry ๐Ÿค”. It's not just about preserving classic games, but also about promoting accessibility and collaboration among developers and fans ๐Ÿ’ป. Microsoft is setting a great precedent here ๐Ÿ‘.

omg did u no that microsoft opened up the source code for zork?? ๐Ÿคฏ i mean i love playing those games on my old computer back in the day lol what was the point of having a github account if u didn't know about this lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ anyway, why do they need to release the source code? cant they just keep it private like activision did with some other games?? btw, how much time does it take to play thru all 3 zork games ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€

I'm so down for this ๐Ÿคฉ! Finally, those old Zork games are outta Microsoft's control and we can dig into 'em like a pro! I mean, think about it, these classic text-based adventure games have been around since the 80s and they're basically just text files with code. It's crazy to me that nobody really had access to them until now ๐Ÿคฏ.

And let's be real, who needs all those proprietary elements like commercial packaging and marketing materials? It's not like it adds any real value to the game itself ๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that Microsoft chose to focus on preserving the source code is just awesome, IMO ๐Ÿ‘. I'm loving how they're contributing directly to history by making these games freely available under the MIT License ๐Ÿ’ป.

But, you know, this move also makes me wonder... what's next? Are we gonna see other classic games like Adventure or Colossal Cave Adventure open-sourced too? ๐Ÿค” Only time will tell, but I'm hyped for it! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, who needs Activision when you've got Microsoft just handing over the keys to Zork paradise? ๐Ÿšช It's about time these classics were free for us mortals to tinker with. The fact that Jason Scott had already uploaded the source code in 2019 and it was all just a big mess waiting to happen is pretty wild. ๐Ÿ’ฅ And now we get to enjoy the fruits of Microsoft's labor without having to worry about their lawyers coming after us like a pack of ravenous wolves ๐ŸฆŠ๐Ÿ‘€. The idea that Stacy Haffner thinks they're contributing directly to history is pretty amusing too... I guess you could say Microsoft is finally making up for lost time ๐Ÿ‘.

I remember playing Zork back in the day on my old PC ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ... I'm so glad Microsoft is making these classic games available for everyone to enjoy again. It's like digging up old vinyl records from your grandma's attic โ€“ you never know what treasures you'll find! ๐Ÿ˜Š The fact that they're using the MIT License ensures that all this retro goodness is free for us to use, modify, and share... it's just so cool! ๐Ÿค– I'm a bit surprised it took Microsoft this long to open up the source code, considering how big of an impact these games had on the gaming industry back in the 80s. Still, better late than never, right? ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ˜’ just learned that climate change is making coral reefs turn into 'skeleton reefs' ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ’€ because of warmer ocean temperatures it's like they're literally turning into ghostly remains of their former selves ๐Ÿ˜ต no wonder sea life is in trouble ๐Ÿ‘€ what's next, are we gonna lose our oceans too? ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

I'm not sure I get the hype around this... releasing the source code for old games is cool and all, but what's the point? Are people really gonna spend their time modding these ancient texts or whatever? ๐Ÿค”

And another thing, it feels kinda weird that Microsoft owns the IP rights to Zork now, but they're just sharing the code. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people can play these games again and all, but what about the commercial stuff like packaging and marketing materials? Shouldn't those be open-sourced too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I guess this is a step in the right direction for preserving gaming history, but let's keep things in perspective. These are just old games from the '80s... people can still play them on emulators or retro consoles if they want to!

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Like, can you imagine having to Google how to fix a simple code glitch in Zork? This is like, finally paying off a debt of nostalgia for all us retro gamers ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ’ป. The fact that it's under the MIT License is also pretty cool - it means we're not worried about some soulless corporate lawyer ruining our fun ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I'm also loving that Microsoft is being chill about this. I mean, they could've easily said 'screw it' and kept everything locked down, but nope, they're choosing to be all friendly and contribute to history ๐Ÿค. It's like they're trying to prove that corporate giants can actually have a soft spot for retro gaming ๐Ÿ˜Š.

But seriously, who knew Microsoft had such a good heart? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm loving this move from Microsoft ๐Ÿคฉ! It's awesome that they're making these classic games freely available for anyone to play and experiment with ๐ŸŽฎ. I mean, who wouldn't want to dive into the world of Zork and explore its nooks and crannies? ๐Ÿ˜„ The fact that they're using the MIT License makes sense too, it's a pretty permissive license that allows for some awesome possibilities, like people being able to create their own mods or derivatives. It's a win-win situation all around! ๐Ÿ’ก

I donโ€™t usually comment but... this is actually kinda cool! I mean, who wouldn't want to tinker with old-school adventure games ๐Ÿค”? Zork, in particular, was always one of my favorites back in the day. It's awesome that Microsoft decided to open up the source code after Jason Scott already uploaded it to GitHub ๐Ÿ™. Now we can all learn from these classic games and maybe even create new ones!

I donโ€™t know about others, but I think this move will attract some retro gaming enthusiasts and maybe even some young programmers who want to create their own text-based adventures ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ป. The fact that the source code is now available under the MIT License means we can all use it freely, which is super nice of Microsoft ๐Ÿ‘.

It's also interesting to think about what this might mean for the future of gaming and preservation. I mean, if more companies start sharing their classic games' source code, maybe we'll see a resurgence of interest in old-school gaming ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ฅ!

I'm like totally stoked to see these classic games going open source ๐Ÿคฉ! I mean, it's crazy how Microsoft took control of Activision's IP and then just handed over the keys to Zork ๐Ÿคฏ. It makes total sense that they'd want to preserve the history of these awesome games for everyone to enjoy.

I'm curious to see what kind of new mods and projects people will create now that the source code is out there ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’ป. Maybe we'll even get some retro-style indie games inspired by Zork? The fact that Jason Scott got involved in this project is pretty cool too - he's like a digital archivist superhero, saving all these classics for us ๐Ÿ™Œ.

It's also kinda neat to see Microsoft stepping up and contributing to the community in a meaningful way ๐Ÿ’ผ. I mean, not everyone has to be a giant corporate entity that just cares about profits. Here's hoping they'll keep making more retro games accessible like this ๐Ÿ‘

omg i'm so hyped about this news!!! ๐Ÿคฉ like, can u believe microsoft is finally releasing the source code for zork i, ii, and iii?! it's been ages since people could play around with the original code, and now they're just giving it away to the masses! ๐ŸŽ‰ and it's not just that - they're also making sure everyone knows it's free to use and modify under the mit license. stacy haffner is a total hero for making this happen, btw ๐Ÿ™Œ i'm so glad microsoft is being cool with open-sourcing these classic games... now we can all have some fun tinkering around in the zork universe ๐Ÿ˜„

omg i'm so stoked about this ๐Ÿคฉ! like, imagine being able to dive into the original code of zork and just mess around with it, you know? its such a cool move by microsoft to make these classic games available for free under the mit license. i mean, yeah it makes sense that they'd want to clear up that licensing situation, but still its awesome that they're giving back to the community in this way ๐Ÿ™

i love how jason scott was like "hey lets upload the source code to github" and then microsoft is all "ok cool let us take care of it" ๐Ÿ˜Š. and the fact that theyre not including commercial packaging and marketing materials just shows that they're trying to keep things pure, you know? its all about preserving history and making these games accessible for everyone ๐Ÿ’ป

OMG ๐Ÿคฉ this is sooo cool!! Microsoft is like, totally a lifesaver for retro gamers ๐Ÿ˜Ž releasing the source code for Zork I, II, III is gonna be like, epic ๐Ÿคฏ can't wait to dive in & mod them myself ๐Ÿ’ป hope they keep all the other classics open sourced too ๐Ÿ“ฆ this move from MS is straight fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ stacy haffner sounds super cool btw ๐Ÿ‘
