My Life With Kenneth Williams review – raconteur resurrected by an extraordinary mimic

"Resurrecting the King of Camp: A Tribute to Kenneth Williams"

Thirty years have passed since David Benson first staged his hit show about Kenneth Williams, but the raconteur's centenary birthday marks another revival. The new production is more than just a mimicry – it's an extraordinary tribute that brings back memories for those who grew up with Williams as a mainstay of British life.

Benson, himself a former Jackanory story competition winner, recounts his own journey to becoming a comedian and impressionist. His winning entry in 1975 was read by Williams on national TV, leaving him mortified at being associated with the 'campest man in the UK' by school bullies. This early experience shapes Benson's act one, which also showcases his teenage awakening as an exponent of funny voices.

As the show progresses, Benson delves into the life and times of Williams – a dazzling array of impressions, from Frankie Howerd to Sergeant Bilko, and even the entire cast of Dad's Army. However, it's not just a nostalgic romp; the second act offers a poignant snapshot of Williams' life, capturing his complex personality and vulnerabilities.

Williams was both beloved and insufferable, and Benson's portrayal brings both aspects to life. His Williams is an extraordinary performer, with vocal gymnastics that are as impressive as they are hilarious. The facial contortions and mannerisms are unmistakable decades after the man's death. There is also a poignancy to his fear of intimacy and feelings of worthlessness.

Ultimately, "My Life with Kenneth Williams" is a show about capturing an extraordinary man at a moment in time. It's not just a biographical sketch but an arresting tribute that brings back memories for those who grew up with the King of Camp. Benson's Williams may be thin-skinned, self-absorbed, and permanently performing, but his performances are captivating – if sometimes overwhelming.

At 100 years old, it's clear that Kenneth Williams' legacy will endure, thanks to a show that not only celebrates his life but also invites us to reflect on what made him tick. It's a testament to Benson's skill as a comedian and impressionist that he can evoke both laughter and tears in equal measure.

For those who may have grown up too young to experience Williams' heyday, this show offers an extraordinary chance to connect with the man behind the legend. For those who knew him, it's a loving tribute to a performer who continues to captivate audiences with his wit, charm, and irrepressible spirit. "My Life with Kenneth Williams" is more than just a revival – it's an opportunity to celebrate the life of a true British comedy icon.

omg i'm so excited about this new production!!! 🤩 it's amazing that they're doing justice to kenelm williams' legacy 30 yrs after his first show and david benson is like a dream cast to tell his story, he's got the humor & emotional depth to bring wiliams' complex personality to life ❤️ i'm defo seeing this show, i grew up hearing about kenelm from my grandma and it'll be so cool to connect with him on a different level 🎉

I'm not sure I buy all this fuss around Kenny Williams 🤔. I mean, I grew up watching him on TV and he was always a bit too much for me. Still, I think David Benson is doing a pretty good job with this show, even if it feels like just a bunch of impressions and old clips strung together 📺. The part that really gets me is how they're trying to make Williams out as some kind of tragic figure? Dude was a bit of a diva, yeah, but that's what made him funny in the first place 😂. And don't even get me started on all these emotional bits that are supposed to be poignant... feels like just a bunch of malarkey to me 🙄. Still, I suppose it's nice to see someone giving him some love after all these years 👑.

I'm so down for this! 😊 I've seen some crazy stuff about the King of Camp over the years, but this new production sounds like a real tribute 🙏. I love how they're not just mimicking his style but really exploring what made him tick. His impressions are insane btw 🤣.

Here's a little diagram to show you what I mean:

```
I'm excited to see how they'll balance the humor with the more vulnerable side of him. It's not easy to make someone who was both beloved and insufferable relatable, but if anyone can do it, David Benson can 🤓.
Anyway, I think this show is gonna be huge 😎. Even if you didn't grow up watching Kenneth Williams, it's still worth checking out for a glimpse into the life of a true comedy legend 👏.
omg I'm so sorry but I was watching this show last nite & I had no idea he was that talented 🤣, like I'm still trying to process how he could do all those voices & impressions 😂. also can we talk about his facial expressions though? they're giving me LIFE 💀. and I loved how the show didn't just focus on his funny side but also showed his vulnerabilities too 🤗. I feel like we need more shows like this that really get to know the person behind the legend 👍
I'm so down for this! They're bringing back the King of Camp, Kenneth Williams 🎉, in a show that's all about his life and legacy. The guy was like a comedic genius or something... I mean, who else can make impressions of Frankie Howerd and Sergeant Bilko? 🤣 The new production sounds like it's gonna be amazing, with loads of laughs and maybe even some tears too 😊. It's great that they're celebrating his life and all the things that made him so iconic, like his campy style and his fear of intimacy 🤪. I'm definitely gonna check this out, especially since I'm not around when he was alive... 30 years is a long time, but it's good to see that his legacy lives on 💖
🤔 I mean, what's up with these revivals? Thirty years have passed and suddenly everyone remembers this guy who died decades ago? It feels like they're trying too hard to make us nostalgic for the past. And don't even get me started on the 'King of Camp' - sounds like a total made-up title to me 🙄
I did watch it though, and I have to admit that David Benson's portrayal was pretty impressive. He nailed the voice impressions and mannerisms down pat 👏 But still, it feels like we're just seeing a different side of this person who everyone remembers as some sort of camp icon 🤷‍♂️
I mean, what about all the other comedians from that era? Why are they being forgotten in favor of this guy? It's like there's some hidden agenda at play here 🤑
I loved this show!! 😍 It's so great to see Kenneth Williams' legacy being celebrated in such a wonderful way. I was there when my mum was growing up and she always told me about how much she adored him, but now I can see what all the fuss is about 💖 The guy could do voices like nobody's business! And Benson did such a great job of capturing his energy and spirit. I particularly loved the bit where they talked about his fear of intimacy – so poignant 🤗 It's amazing how this show brought back memories for me too, and I know it'll be doing the same for all the other people who grew up with Williams as a mainstay of British life 💕
I'm so down for this revamp of Kenneth Williams 🎉. The new production sounds like it's gonna be a real treat, especially with David Benson at the helm 👏. I love how he's not just rehashing old material but bringing his own energy to the role 💥. And can we talk about the impressions? Frankie Howerd and Sergeant Bilko are always gold 🤣. What I'm really excited about is seeing how this show tackles Williams' more vulnerable side – it's easy to forget that he was a complex person beyond just being 'the King of Camp'. Overall, I think this tribute has all the makings of a classic 💫.
🤣 I loved this show! It's so funny how Benson pokes fun at himself for being mortified by being associated with the 'campest man in the UK' as a kid, it just made me chuckle 😂. The whole thing was like a masterclass in impressionism and Williams' talent is insane 🤯. I loved how they showed both his vulnerable side and the confidence he had on stage too 💁‍♂️. It's amazing to see how this show can still make people laugh and cry decades after Williams passed away 😭. As someone who didn't grow up watching him, it was great to experience his world for a bit 🌎.
lol just watched this show about kenneth williams its like a time machine back to the 70s 🕰️ the guy was such a legend but also super weird & self-absorbed 🤣 i loved how the comedian played him with so much humor and heart, brought tears to my eyes 👃 kenneth williams for life 🎉
🙌 I'm totally stoked about this new production, it's like, a total love letter to Ken Williams 🤣 and I'm not even kidding when I say that David Benson is bloody brilliant at capturing his essence! 💥 The way he weaves together the highs and lows of Williams' life is just masterful - it's not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but a real exploration of what made him tick 🤔. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to watch a show that's all about funny voices and impressions? 😂👀 I'm also loving the way Benson pokes fun at Williams' flaws while still celebrating his genius - it's like he's saying "yeah, Ken was a bit of a diva, but we love him for it" 🙌. And can we talk about how great it is that this show is bringing back memories for people who grew up with Williams? It's like a big ol' group hug for all the fans out there 🤗. Anyway, I'm definitely adding this to my watchlist ASAP - has anyone else seen it?
I'm so hyped for this new production about Kenneth Williams 🎉! 30 yrs after that first show, it's awesome they're doing another tribute. I mean, who didn't love him? 😊 The actor behind it all, David Benson, is literally the best at impressions – from Frankie Howerd to Dad's Army, he got 'em all down! 🤣 His portrayal of Williams is spot on, capturing both the fun and vulnerable sides of the man. It's a testament to how his legacy lives on, even 100 yrs after his centenary birthday. Can't wait to see it live and celebrate another legend in British comedy 💪
🤔 30 yrs r gone & they're still reviving this guy 🙄 what's next? 50 yrs of rehashing old memories? its like they cant let go of the past 👎 Benson's show is all about nostalgia, but its not just that...its also a pity fest 🤧 Williams was a complicated person, thin skin & all, but thats part of why we loved him 😒 still, i guess if u grew up witin it u'll prob love this show 💁‍♀️
oh my god i am literally crying right now this tribute is giving me all the feels benson's portrayal of williams is everything i need more of that show please i'm 30 years old and i didn't grow up with kenneth williams but his legacy is so iconic and this production is doing him justice 🤩💖
I'm totally stoked that this new show is giving us another chance to see Kenneth Williams' genius on stage 🎭! Thirty years after David Benson first performed about him, and now with a fresh production celebrating Williams' centenary, it's clear that his legacy is still as strong as ever 💪.
Benson's storytelling style is really what sets this show apart – it's not just a nostalgic romp through Williams' life, but an actual exploration of the man behind the 'King of Camp'. I love how Benson weaves together impressions, hilarious voices, and even some heartbreakingly poignant moments to bring Williams' complex personality to life 🤣.
What really gets me is how this show humanizes Williams – we see him as vulnerable, self-absorbed, and yet still a total genius of comedy 🤦‍♂️. And Benson's portrayal is spot on – from the vocal gymnastics to the facial contortions, it's like watching an old friend bring it back to life 💁‍♀️.
For anyone who grew up with Williams' antics, this show is a chance to relive the magic 🎉. But even if you didn't experience his heyday, Benson's tribute makes sure that Williams' spirit lives on – it's not just about nostalgia; it's about celebrating an extraordinary performer who still captivates audiences today 💥
